Thank you so much for this video. The screw stud that goes into the thumb screw is having a hard time screwing back in. I have tried oil and it is threaded in correctly, but it won’t budge any further after a couple turns of the screw stud. Is there anything I can use to loosen it up?p
@andytubesewing1953
2 жыл бұрын
I'd say the threads in the thumb screw are bent or blocked with debris. I assume you've closely examined the threads on the screw studs and do not see damage. A couple things I have done is try putting the screw stud in from the other end of the thumb screw. Easy does it (with a drop of oil). That can sometimes straighten a bent thread or clear out some dried oil or grit. Then try the normal assembly again. I have also soaked both pieces in Krud Kutter degreaser or WD40-type products to soften any hard, dried oil/grit. Use a wire brush on the screw stud threads. Finally, one time in desperation 🙏 I put the dry, clean screw stud in the freezer overnight. In the morning I boiled the thumb screw in water for about 3 minutes (roiling boil). Wearing gloves I was able to gently force the screw stud into the thumb screw hole. A retired repairman told me of that trick. According to him, it makes the screw a tiny bit smaller (micron) and the thumb screw hot and flexible. You know I was desperate because I took it apart to clean the machine for a paying customer and what if I could not get it back together? 😳 Oh, Brother! It did work for me though. ✨🌟👍🏆

Hi Andy, I started dismantling a 1938 201 last evening and was checking some of the screws as I removed them. I found several 10-32's being used. A 10-32x 1 1/2 is used to hold the plug base to the machine, (that little double nut w/ threads inside and out) and the screw that holds the light socket in its cover is a 10-32 x 1/2 or 3/4 or so, it was missing but the threads check. Seems hit or miss on these screws, I haven't really narrowed down a method to their madness yet. Anyway, thanks for another fine video my friend.

They sure went to a lot of expense to set up taps and dies for all their threaded fasteners that's for sure, it isn't 100% but they have a market there. I'm glad that most are still available like the dog screws and such. Kenmore has a 5 sided bolt, at least on the 158's where your hook timing must be adjusted, to force people to pay their techs to time the hook. The special socket was once available by special order but not any longer. Now we know why sears is going belly up. The solution to that problem is to cut a groove in the bolt head with a dremel and use a screw driver to take it out, and then run a 10-32 tap in the hole and replace it with a hex head cap screw. People get birds nests in the hook area from improper top thread tension and then get angry and jerk the thread nest out, throwing it out of time, so they compound their problem a thousand fold, I'm finding.

Hi Andy, I lost the tension spring that was also bent at the tip, however replacing it with the tip of a chopped down plastic shaft cotton bud provided enough friction to save the day. Thanks for this video guide.... for the first time since I bought my 99K, I can set it on long stitch and it stays put. Cheers

@andytubesewing1953

Feed/Stitch Regulator "creeping" is usually caused by a loose mounting screw that holds the feed regulator to the feed forked connection rod. You see me removing that big screw starting at @14:10 in the video. You want to be sure it is completely installed and firm otherwise the vibration and movement of the feed forked connection rod will allow the regulator to creep up and/or down while sewing (hinging effect). Videos showing how to remove the handwheel or motor for access to the screw can be found in my model 15-91 playlist here: kzitem.info/door/PLsCOZgzzaiKJftyGwzdDiWa9R6HFEACJo Good luck, Alan.

Hi, Andy-- This was a very helpful video--I'd never have dared to explore that far inside a sewing machine without it--but taking the feed regular mechanism apart didn't solve my problem, and I wonder if you have any advice. I can't move the stitch regulator thumb screw above about the #10 mark. The indicator pin--the one with the red dot in your video--seems to get stuck in the groove of the indicator plate. If I take the plate off, the mechanism moves freely. I thought maybe the pin just needed to be pushed farther in, but I can't move it. It doesn't pull out freely as yours does in the video; it seems very firmly stuck. (I tried a bit of penetrating oil, but it didn't seem to help.) I'd appreciate any suggestions.
@andytubesewing1953
Жыл бұрын
My first thought is the indicator pin is bent. It may be stuck in the regulator due to dried oil. Penetrator oil can help and I often heat the metal parts with a hair dryer to soften the old oil and get the parts moving. I assume you did not remove the regulator itself from the machine so I'd try more oil and heat. It's hard to hurt anything inside with a hairdryer. I'm puzzled as to how it could have been bent b/c it's a sturdy piece of steel. But if the machine works normally without the plate then I doubt the feed dog is out of adjustment. Thus the thought that maybe the pin, oh!... or maybe the indicator plate!, is bent or damaged.
@erbuky
Жыл бұрын
@@andytubesewing1953 Thank you so much for responding! Yes, I also thought the pin might be bent and wedged in--I don't see another explanation, really. I did remove the regulator so that I could push and pull at the pin from both sides, but it wouldn't budge. I was proud to get it back in! Will try heat as well as penetrating oil.

@@erbuky Impressive to get that regulator out & back in with the pin in place! Nicely done. Is the spring that the pin goes thru in place? You did not mention the indicator plate if it was bent, so I guess not.
@erbuky
Жыл бұрын
@@andytubesewing1953 Yes, the spring is in place (or was until I dropped it on the floor). It doesn't seem to be limiting the travel of the pin in the groove--what's getting stuck is, for want of a better word, the nipple of the pin.
@andytubesewing1953
Жыл бұрын
@@erbuky OK, thanks. I asked b/c there are a few variations of model 99 and this one is the only one with a spring and double-slotted cover plate that I can find in the parts manuals. If you could get the pin out do you plan to just leave it out so you sew shorter stitches and get into reverse? The red-nippled pin is strictly an indicator and serves no other function. It's a weird problem I never encountered before. If you used a vice and tried bending the pin I wonder if it would get stuck going below 10 SPI. I have had screws that took multiple oiling and heating to "break free" but eventually would turn. This pin is more of a pull-out situation and hard to get traction.

Andy. Very grateful for your videos. I am cleaning up a 185k. It's mechanism is identical to the 99 as far as I can see. The only/last thing giving me problems is getting the little roller back in place before putting the rest of the regulator back. It came out easily but I am not having success getting it back. Any tips please? Thank you.
@andytubesewing1953
4 жыл бұрын
Be sure to put oil on the hole of the roller to help it slide on. Don't oil the outside circumference of the roller yet so it is not too slippery. I have used a BBQ stick from the end opening to get the roller near the screw stud and a plier from the front opening, or your finger, to push it off the BBQ stick and onto the stud. You can try a hemostat to hold the roller from the end opening, holding the roller between the inner hole and outside edge and get it started onto the stud, then a finger from the front to hold it on the stud as you release the hemostat. You can turn the armshaft and that will rock the feed forked connection and move the stud a little bit for the position. On the 99K I did a while ago I used the BBQ stick method and that worked for me. I looked up both parts records and they are the exact same parts on the 99K & 185. Good Luck. Oh, wait! My wife was reading over my shoulder and says she used a magnet to hold the roller thru the front and manipulated the roller onto the stud with her finger from the back opening. Magnet on the outside curved edge of the roller.
