As a 37 year Boeing employee I can tell you that we still love the "Queen of the Skies". Fortunately the 747 is not disappearing anytime soon as we are still producing the 747-8 passenger and 747-8F freighter models. Unfortunately no domestic airline has bought either of these. Thank you for celebrating our most beloved airplane. She was, and is, very special.

What’s even cooler is that Delta, as a gesture of thanks to its employees, took a piece of 747 fuselage and painted it to make 80,000 puzzle pieces of it and Ed Bastian presented a puzzle on Profit Sharing Day at the Delta Flight Museum, and then had each of them mailed out on personalized stands. We are always working in a changing industry, and it’s never easy, but it makes it so much better to form a career with this amazing company when they do those things that show they care, and we do everything we can to make our customers happy and want to fly with us again. Thank you for your kind words at the end of the video, and we are proud to have you as part of our Delta family. I have just subscribed to your channel and have enjoyed all your great videos. It will be my pleasure to hopefully one day meet you on one of my non-rev trips out of ATL. Cheers.

zerg, yes you are right. i hate them all just the same. you know those school yard bullies ? well, when they grow up, airlines hire them. they have psychopathic behavior, they enjoy having power over people, and using it to demean them. when they do the psychological testing, they actually verify your "bully behavior" and if you're a jerk, you're in.

I remember in January 2013 when I took DAL172 from Tokyo-Narita to JFK. I knew in advance the plane would be a 747, so I was quite psyched. When we boarded, I was happy to find out that my family and I were seated on the upper deck. I then asked one of the flight attendants if I could meet the pilots. She disappeared, and came back and beckoned me to come forward. The cockpit was extremely cramped, ironic for a plane that size. I couldn't help but gush over this beautiful bird, with so much history behind it. The captain sat me down in the left seat, and I was awestruck by the towering view over the nose. I felt like a king. I even went as far as saying "Thank you, Joe Sutter." Mind you, this was before his passing in August 2016. The captain had asked me if I had read the book Sutter had written, and as luck would have it, I was reading it as a choice book for school. Fast forward to July 2017, I board DAL118 from Boston to Paris Charles De Gaulle. My family had rushed to the gate to make time for security. I wanted to meet the pilots, but was worried we wouldn't have enough time before departure. The plane was a 767-300ER, so I was happy about that. I asked one of the stewards; "Excuse me, are the pilots busy, or do they have time for a visit?" Like the other stewardess, he disappears and comes back a couple seconds later. I follow him up to the cockpit. The captain, like the 747 captain, gets out of his seat and allows me to sit in the left seat. Knowing the retirement of the 747s was only a few months away, I wore a shirt with the 747 insignia on it. The first officer said to me "Nice Shirt", which made me beam, then frown, being reminded that not only Delta was retiring the 747, but that there were only about 400 left in service world, which I told the crew. Before I left, the first officer gave me a 767 trading card. EDIT: My family owns a house on the coast of Maine, that is one of the busiest air corridors in the world, from places like JFK, Boston, Newark, Chicago, Miami, to places like London, Paris, Amsterdam, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai. I told the crew about this, asking them if they were following the path that I had see so many other flights make, but alas, it was a different flight path. By the way, the tail number for the 747 and 767 were, respectively, N670US and N1200K

Very evocative. In August 1973, I flew on a Delta 747 from London Heathrow to Washington Dulles, at that time not a Delta route. It was a Pan Am/Delta interchange, where PA operated the transatlantic segment, then DL continued on to ATL, but only after all the pax had deplaned at Dulles and gone through customs, I was very put out because the aircraft had no IFE system, not even those rubber headphones playing a few channels of music. It was a long seven hour flight. And this is still my only 747 trip to date.

Thanks for the upload! Recently flew down to Atlanta and visited the Delta Flight Museum for my birthday. A well presented museum that also has the 747 on display giving recognition to Joe Sutter, father of the Boeing 747 and a WW2 veteran. I am thankful during my generation being a avgeek kid of the 70s, the 747 has always reigned queen of the skies. Many of my avgeek globetrekking years were via 747s in and out of Los Angeles. Nice tributes from both United and Delta as the 747 facilitated free market economies and no doubt an engineering marvel with both passenger and cargo variants. Had wondered when Delta (Northwest) will officially retire the trademark 747 from revenue service. It is amazing to see retirements globally of this iconic aircraft thanks to PanAm's Juan Trippe and Boeing Aircraft Joe Sutter. Personal favorite British Airways and Lufthansa will be flying the queen for a few more years.

Do you happen to know when the last "Delta" (Will always be NWA planes to me) 747 flight will be? I know this was the "last" Domestic flight, but when is the Queen going to stop over all? Boeing shot themselves in the foot by deciding to kill the 757 prematurely because of a lull in sales in the early 2000's. Now they'll pay the price as the A321 Neo steals the 757's place. They could have made a 757 Max.....but no.....it's all about the old 737's.....whose core design is older than the 747 actually.

I love DL, as well, Jeb. I had my first trip from ORD to CDG in on AF 1985. On a whim, I asked the flight attendants (in French, of course!) if I could go upstairs and see the pilots. They let me go and I actually got to go into the cockpit and briefly chat with the pilots. Probably would not be possible nowadays with post-9/11 security measures. Many years later, I had a seat on the upper deck of a DL 747 flying from ATL to CDG. Unfortunately, a piece of equipment that was required for flying over water was not working and after about an hour and a half of flying over the East Coast, we had to turn back. That was probably my last flight on a 747. Thanks. Love your videos, Jeb!

Again, thanks for sharing. This trip that you shared reminded me of an incredible final flight that I had the opportunity to witness. I lived in Las Vegas for many years. My job, and contrary to public perception, not everyone who lives there is a dealer or cocktail waitress! I was fortunate to work right alongside the major runway for takeoff and approach (much smaller back then.) The Concorde was being retired. We knew when she was coming and when she was going. All we did was stand in the parking lot with our jaws agape. On both ends, What immediately came to mind was that she was so much smaller that I had expected. It really was quite an experience. Probably only secondary to being in the cabin versus watching the cabin. It was pretty awesome in any case. On another note, I am also a big Delta fan. They do take care of and respect their passengers. Sorry so lengthy.

It’s Heresy to believe that no US Airline would have a 747 in their domestic operations, even if it was just for New York to L.A. It’s a major hit to the Aviator’s heart to see Delta’s 747 get retired (but not before the Queen of the Skies went to be a hero XD).

The song 'You are the last one.' or what have you. I tried to find the song and artist by looking up the lyrics, but cannot find anything. Oh well! lol! Kind of wondered if this was an indie band or British. Has a British sound, kind of. Anyway, still on a marathon of watching your videos during an unusually slow time period! 💗

Would have been better without the wailing music. The 747 had its own unique soundtrack!

For more than 40 years of my life, my mantra has been: "If Delta doesn't go there, neither do I." I have NEVER regretted that decision.

thing is, they didn't upgraded to a better plane, they downgraded. but hey, it's delta. how the hell can you still pay to fly this company, i don't know. your parents would have never accepted such a criminal company. they run their business like north korea. they have no regard for the people.

Nice tribute... but where was any video of the plane or the flight (aside from passengers at DTW)? Would have been nice to see the interior one last time.

I’m surprised the retirement flight didn’t go out of Atlanta. Being a sole delta flyer and Atlanta native, I see delta a lot around me.
