one of the reasons I think why Vi and Jinx couldn't connect at all in the end was because of Vi's inability to recognize any changes that powder had gone through and what she became. The reason you hear Milo's laugh at the tea party is because he recognizes that what Vi is saying is a lie, but Jinx wants to believe that lie, so she shoots the doll to make him shut up

The first season of Arcane was the story of Powder becoming Jinx. Even if in real life the descent isn't necessarily permanent or irreversible, for story purposes there is no longer Powder. Moving forward, Jinx will not be the main focus like she was in this Season and will assume the role of antagonist moving forward is most likely what will happen. My guess for Season 2, will part of it be Vi's story arc in dealing with the aftermath of finally losing Powder, and basically finding out what her purpose moving forward will be as all these years she only thought about getting back and taking care of Powder. And this will be undoubtedly become more complicated with the inevitable war between PIltover and Zaun. Given we don't know who is dead from the Super Mega Death Rocket Jinx fired, it's hard to say how the war will be shaped. But one thing is certain, Jinx is but the first 'monster' that will come in the chaos of the war.

I don't think Silco was doing it to protect Jinx. I think his fear of losing Jinx to Vi is bigger than his concern over whatever mental health impact Vi's words have on Jinx. He is just afraid that Vi's words might actually pull Jinx away from him and "to her side". Killing Cait was the ultimate compliance test for Jinx: Cait was an enforcer, she signified everything Piltover stands for and what they were fighting against, and if Jinx can't kill her because Vi asks her not to, this means Jinx is lost to Silco. So Silco MUST convince Jinx to do his will instead of Vi's in that situation.

Another thing I noticed about Silco's "Don't cry. You're perfect" line is how it relates to the last time Jinx accidentally caused family to die. Last time, she was yelled at, hit, told she messed up, and (to her) tossed aside. This time, there's no anger, no violence, no pushing her away. He just tells her he accepts her for everything she is, something she's NEVER had before. Because even though Vi did love Powder, she was often pointing out her flaws and mistakes, being told she's not good enough (even if it was to protect her.)

Silcos "Is there anything so undoing, as a daughter ?" has to be taken in context: EP3: Silco ask WHY Vander stopped fighting, how can it be that he became this tame peacemaker. EP9: "it all makes sense now brother" < As Silce realizes that he is NEVER going to give up on his Daughter and would do anything for her, he realizes that THIS is the reason why Vander changed: His Daughter Vi. Something I liked about the Silco and Jayce scene is how Silco's gaze is unflinching until Jinx is mentioned. When Jayce brings up Jinx Silco breaks eye contact and looks away. A little detail but something that shows how much Silco cares about Jinx. He never considered her for part of the peace deal and when she's brought up as a bargaining piece he becomes defensive and even puts himself as responsible instead of her. Also the death of Silco has an interesting difference from Vanders. When Vander died Vi punched and "abandoned" powder. Where as when Silco dies he specifically tells her "you're perfect". A completely different response and one that kind of solidifies for Jinx that Jinx is who she is now.

Silco knows about Powder's trauma and all of her past, and until this episode Silco constantly tried to save Powder from all sorts of situations that would annoy her, most of the time (until Violet sets foot in the underground city of course). The show is full of those little expressions. When Vi is punch drunk and "Vander" taunts her with "Your guard could use some work" (9:25) the show went to the trouble of putting in a sneering "Heh!" from Vi. It's silent and half-formed in her delirious state but it's still there. And it may have any number of layers (from "Good one, you jerk" to "Great, I'm so headsmacked I'm hearing Vander's voice") but it feels so natural. I love the details in ARCANE. It actually seems ironic how Vi was so desperate to kill Silco thinking it would bring "Powder" back and that turned out to be the biggest catalyst for Jinx to be the only one remaining. Also, I can never get over the song at the end of the episode, because, to me, it's directed at Vi. She's the one that created the "monster" that is Jinx, and Jinx just wanted to be loved by her. Silco is a fantastic example of how more stories should be writing villains. At the end of the day, what is your villain if not a person. The best stories are the ones we can relate to and engage with and feel strongly invested in. Silco is not comically evil... He is his own person with his own motivations and morals and reasons for fighting. Above all else, he is a human. His attachment to Jinx was genuine, and it came from a place of shared trauma. We felt his self reflection and doubt, and we cried along with Jinx when she was forced to kill him. There are no winners in war, only survivors, and nobody escapes war with clean hands. Speaking of war, Ambessa Medarda is likely about to go off the deep end. Even if some of the councilors do survive, even if Mel survives, Ambessa will not let this attack go unanswered. There will be consequences for what Jinx just did. Seeing as Ambessa has her own influence and soldiers from Noxus to support her, I'm fearful she's going to take things to Zaun herself. Season 2 is definitely going to be something, if it even focuses on these same characters.

@@Ockerlord That's a very shortsighted view of things. The fact is that Vi, at no point in the entirety of the series, acknowledges Jinx; It's always Powder. Humans have a great capacity for change, but we cannot change what has already been done. There are plenty of excuses for what Vi did in Episode 3, but at the end of the day, what she did was abandon her sister to a crime lord. And while she feels compelled to "fix" that mistake by saving Powder, the honest truth is that there is no Powder any longer. Jinx is the sum of all of the events that have lead to this moment, the good and the bad, and while she has the capacity to change again, she can never go back to who she was before. And because Vi refuses to acknowledge Jinx, she can't begin to help guiding her back to a more stable and healthy individual. The only reason Vi didn't judge Jinx is because she does not consider Jinx and Powder to be the same person. This entire series struck me as basically the same sort of story as the ancient Greek tragedies, like Oedipus, or the like. Jinx truly does have a tragic flaw, in that she really *does* self-sabotage things right when she or those she cares about are right on the cusp of success. Knocking the board over which led to them losing all the loot at the beginning. Her monkey bomb resulting in the deaths of her entire family, basically. She recovers the hex gem, but is nearly killed in the process and forever changed by what Singed did to her to save her life. Then, at the end, the council have all unanimously agreed to give her and the Undercity literally *everything* Silco has wanted for decades, but right as they finish voting, her rocket impacts and could wipe out the entire council.

Very apt that Jinx put Cait in her Enforcer’s uniform. A way of saying, “hey, remember, we hate these guys?” And that also contributed to her line of “you changed too.” Yikes. I could literally write pages on that dinner scene but I’m going to try and keep it brief. It’s such a master class of everything coming together. The story, the music, the tension, the animation. Everything about that scene just adds that extra layer and it’s astounding. Any scene that makes me think even for a split second, even with meta knowledge on my side, that Cait’s head was on the platter deserves an award in all honesty. There was a cupcake, however… that’s some dark humor there, Jinx. The way this show plays with Powder vs Jinx is so good (even if people take it far too literally sometimes). Jinx presents the option of Powder and Jinx to Vi. Says that she’ll be Powder again, if Vi can kill Cait. But it’s a false choice, and I think even Vi knows it. Powder’s chair is pushed into the table, surrounded by clutter. Jinx’s chair is pulled out and ready to be sat in at any time. It’s inevitable how it’s all going to end, that Jinx is going to sit in that chair no matter what at the end of all this. And it’s heartbreaking because we know Jinx is a victim. She’s been through so much, but she’s not the only victim in this scene. Vi loves her sister so much, still thinks there’s maybe some sort of hope. But no matter how much she loves her sister, she can’t enable her homicidal tendencies. She can’t defend her actions anymore. Silco has become Jinx’s enabler. When they were kids, Vi would’ve let Powder get away with murder (figuratively). But she can’t anymore. There’s also just the idea of how their past loved ones affect them in the present. For better or worse, Vi uses the people she loved as a means of pushing herself forward. It’s what kept her sane in Stillwater, it’s what pushed her beyond her limits in the fight between her and Sevika. It’s why she can’t see that it’s not the same for Jinx. Jinx sees them all as demons, monsters that torment her. And it’s this disconnect that is ultimately their undoing.

Has anybody else been seeing Jinx trying to get herself killed straight after each time she is stressed? Episode 4 at the end of the scene where she projects Vi onto the pink haired girl. She taunts Sevica, you see Sevica powering up her arm under the cloak before getting distracted by the alert. You can see Jinx's disappointment/anger when Sevica turns away. Later when she is in her "room" after being side-lined by Silko you see her playing chicken with the grenade countdowns when she is being haunted and only stops once she reaches a decision that drives her "demons" to silence and responds by throwing all the grenades/temptation away. On the bridge in "Boy Saviour" when Ekko has her pinned her expression changes from fearful, to a sort of peaceful acceptance like "finally" before she releases the grenade. Even in the final scene she takes that gamble when facing down Caitlyn and only puts the gun down when Vi stops Caitlyn and calls Jinx her sister. (It's also hinted at when you see her kill the raven in the arcade, during the bridge fight scene the raven is her background "mascot" in the childhood game flashback. As well as ravens appearing in various scenes with Jinx, the reunion with Vi being an easy example.)

Powder jinxing their independence is a direct parallel to her jinxing the rescue of Vander. And in both parallels she also ends up killing her father figures. There was also a big callback when she said "I thought, maybe you could love me like you used to. Even though I'm ... different.", because in episode 2 Vi told her "what makes you different, makes you strong". Or when she wanted Vi to make Caitlyn go away, it was basically like when they were imagining monsters that Vi then had to chase away - which in hindsight, were likely already real for Powder too, that's why she got scared. We can see the red flags of her issues in the intro of episode 1 already on the bridge, but without context it flies over one's head. Same with her codependency issues with Vi when she has her tantrum when they're off freeing Vander. This whole story is such a beautiful tragedy.

I have a feeling Jinx will get somewhat of a happy ending. As far as I know, the end game of Arcane will have all characters in their appropriate league lore positions (of course that could be subject to change at any point). What I'm excited to hopefully see is the arrival of Ziggs. Ziggs is a yordle (Heimerdinger's species) who is as crazy as Jinx with a love for explosions. Ziggs and Jinx cross paths and immediately become best friends (with Ziggs pretending to be one of Jinx's hallucinations) and are about to become Zaun's doom but then Ziggs remembers advice Heimerdinger gave Ziggs about keeping somewhat of a low profile as not to be exposed (I haven't read entirely into the whole lore yet but Yordles use a charm to disguise themselves so humans won't recognize them). In a way, Ziggs becomes Jinx's greatest form of emotional regulation as he validates and supports her in her chaotic nature while also keeping her in check so she doesn't go murdering innocent people.

Thanks for the reaction series. In a series in which the principal character is "mad," it's always interesting to hear the viewpoint of a professional in the field of mental health (in addition to the simple views of another human being... which is why we watch reactions, I think). I think that storytelling is an important part of the human existence, which helps us to make sense of who we are and who we're supposed to be, and so I think it's important that such masterworks as _Arcane_ delve into so many fundamental issues of human existence, and I think your commentary a valuable addition tp that experience.

I think it's ironic that straight after accusing Silco of being stuck in the past, Jinx says that Vi can have Powder back. One of the main themes of the show, in my opinion, is people being stuck in the past, and not being ready to accept the new reality. You can't turn the clock back. City of progress indeed. I also think that Jinx sitting in that chair... that's despair. She's not triumphantly claiming the name Jinx.... she's admitting to herself that yes, she's a jinx, and she can't escape it.

I don't say this often, but I consider this show a masterpiece. Everything from storytelling and soundtrack to animation and voice acting. 10/10 on my list. Sadly, there is no guarantee the second season would continue this storyline, as there are too many characters and stories from the world of League of Legends not even scratched upon. But one is certain, whatever the second season be, it would be a spectacular work of art, because all the artistic geniuses working on it.

The reason Jinx couldn't connect with Vi, is because Vi refused to accept that she was Jinx. Vi had an idealised version of Powder in her mind that simply no longer existed, and apparently she couldn't come to terms with that fact. Jinx wasn't able to convince her sister to accept her, and after losing her 3rd father, she gave up on even trying.

Your reactions are all so thoughtful and interesting. One thing I've always kind of wondered after seeing this episode is: what would've happened if Vi died instead of Silco? I could see two scenarios where this could've happened; either Jinx didn't react in time to stop Silco killing her or when she shot she ended up accidentally shooting her instead. I mean, with the second scenario, while I fully believe her instincts were telling her to save her sister it really didn't seem like she was aiming for anyone in particular and she could've hit anyone. Would that have completely broken her relationship with Silco like his death seems to have done for her relationship with Vi? Would it be different depending on if she accidentally killed her trying to save her or if just wasn't able to stop Silco? Would she have chosen to "become" Powder again instead of becoming Jinx like she did here? I've been thinking way too much about this. Really, anyone there could've become a victim. She could've shot Caitlyn, which, oh boy, I don't think that would've worked out between the sisters, Caitlyn could've shot Jinx if she didn't listen to Vi telling her not to, there's just so many alternative scenarios here.

honestly, how did they do this ? they actually pulled it off, no one expected anything necessarily more than competent junk food, direct to streaming fare that's really just intricately masked marketing.. naw, what you see here, this is what being truly passionate about your characters looks like.. truly taking the time to let the characters tell you where they want to go, and crafting an honest story and world around them, a detailed yet understated world, grounded by centuries of death, decay, and renewal that never distracts or hinders the characters path.. no distractions, no inconsequential scenes, zero filler.. they even said, you want some icing on that cupcake? "you know what would be cool?" *dollop* _unique_ _animation_ _style_ / _genre_ _music_ _video_ .. in every episode.. they even understood those bits were the perfect time for filling out characters with show-dont-tell.. moments that could be as abstract and experimental you want, so long as we're character appropriate and emotionally legible.. ..to me the most impressive feat, a tough trick for even masters of their craft, letting character motivations, and their decisions about how they achieve or avoid, be the primary driver of the plot at every step.. combined with the very ambitious time frame that truly makes us feel we've grown up along side our adopted family.. a delicate balance between character and plot, while never quite sure where things are going, we're surprised in the moment at the twists and turns, then reflecting on the entirety from the apex, and clearly see, well, of course that's what happened, it couldnt have happened any other way, each character behaved true to their personality, realistic motivations, some all-consuming vendettas, some subconscious instinctual reactions.. even animated, characters this rounded out convince they are as real as you and I..

p.s. although Arcane will probably always be my favorite animated thing ever, I did see an animation the other day that messed me up, and touched my heart.. Belle! I am looking forward to watching an elegant crier such as yourself be brought to your metaphorical knees! a beautiful film that will restore your faith in humanity in a multifaceted celebration of unconditional love, true selflessness, and compassion for the most wicked among us, because we understand that what broke them is to blame, not the hurt lost soul trapped just beneath nearly impenetrable defenses.. did I mention it's a bonafide musical, the likes of we haven't seen since the golden age of Disney?

Thank you for the interesting and insightfull reactions, Arcane is the reason I subscribed to your channel😃 The ending is epic, and for me rocket cliffhanger did not matter. Family dinner is the great dramatic ending for me! The satisfying end of The Season One is the Jinx deciding who she is. When she had sat on that chair with Jinx name like a boss, arghhhh it was epic and sad at the same time! And Silco, that last scene with him tear me apart... He told Jinx "YOU are perfect", before he was telling "Jinx is perfect". He trully accept her fully, and Vi wasn't ready to do that (remeber how she looked on Jinx in ending of 6th episode fight?), yes she didn't have the time to reconnect to get to know grown up little sister (almost worked if the end of 6th ep.🥺), but still ... Vi just was more radical in her opinions, like younger Silco with Vander...

P.S. There is one scene in last 9th episode which I find very important for season 2, but a lot people overlooked it. When Silco and Jayce was meeting on city walls, Jayce said: "I was reminded recently of what brought us together in the first place The threats beyond our walls". And Silco had answered: "The city has a short memory". Threats beyond OUR walls! Like Noxus Empire, the mommy general Medarda is part of! So I hope, that in Season 2, the both part of the City, after some struggle, will be forced to cooperate for survival and fight the outsiders to remain independent!

I think the "And you can have Powder back" wasn't as straight forward as it seemed. I don't think Jinx was offering Powder to Vi, so much as she was asking Vi to resurrect Powder. I think Vi had a calming effect on Powder back when they were younger. She kept Powder sane. I think Jinx misses this in her life and wants it back, but doesn't know how to ask for it. Violence is all she knows know, so that is how she asks for Vi's love. She probably doesn't fully believe the logic herself, but I always read desperation in her face in that moment. Also, I find it interesting that Jinx only tells the Mylo voice in her head to shut up when she's looking at Vi. Here she goes so far as to shoot the mannequin Mylo, when she tells it to shut up. Vi had a way of helping Powder ease her doubts and fears when they were kids. I find it telling that she stands up to the Mylo voice (The personification of her doubts and fears) when Vi is around.

I think the last step to Powder becoming Jinx was the death of Silco... She accidentally killed her family before, in times when we called her Powder - pure, open, kind-hearted. And when she did it again, she just couldn´t let herself to feel the same pain and guilt. That´s why she became Jinx, who can´t feel this emotions. But what I see as the most important in this show, is that Powder and Jinx are still the same person! Powder was always criticized for who she is, and her strengths was seen as weaknesses... When she tried to became strong enough, she creates Jinx as complete opposite to Powder, whose personality only caused her pain. But that doesn´t mean Jinx really IS a different person - it´s Powder´s protection. She is the protector of her inner Powder, her vulnerable self that is still able to have feelings. I think it´s really important to know those "parts of ourselves" that lives in us - different desires, protections from traumas or different sides of personalities that may be in the oposition... And make them space to live in us together in peace.

The Choice Powder/Jinx gives Vi at the tea Party, I believe was a test for her sister. Could Vi accept Powder how she is & not how she was. Could Vi accept Jinx. I think Powder was going to sit in the Jinx chair regardless of what Vi did. After she instinctively protected Vi against Silco killing him in the process only reinforced Powder’s acceptance of who she is in the present. Jinx. Silco last words also reassured her on choosing an identity, no longer being torn. “Don’t Cry,you’re Perfect” was such a impactful thing to tell Jinx. Silco had a Villain to Father journey, rather he became his brother in the end. He loved Jinx for who she was. He didn’t say Jinx Is perfect while he was about to die, he said “your perfect.” I think Jinx leaving Vi was significant too. She did not kill Caitlyn either, after firing that missile at the Topside she is the one that leaves her sister. No longer Vi leaving Powder. Jinx has cut ties with her sister.

Most reactors ask why Jinx shot the council just as the council voted for peace. But Jinx has no way to know that. All she knows is she's broken and the root cause for everything wrong in her life is right there, and she has a big gun to make it go away with. Also, she's been force-OD'd on mutagenic drugs, which has turned her superhuman as a result, so who knows what that did to her brain and neurochemistry. Also, as you pointed out, When Silko and Vi were yelling at her, it was like hitting her with all the trauma's, all at once. She's been taught violence as a coping mechanism by Vi, and by Silko, so she reacts violently... and accidentally kills Silko, who as he dies, accepts her, faults and all. The one person in her life to say they just care, no matter how broken she is. After that, it's his voice in her head, not Powder's.

So glad that you enjoyed Arcane and shared your professional knowledge with us. I feel like I can understand the characters better now. My recommendation for new reactions would be the series Harley Quinn. I believe it's on HBO and the third season aired recently. It's more comedy and a bit over the top at times, but still has some serious moments. Overall most of the characters are flawed since the focus is on the 'villains', but at the same time they are portrayed very lovable and you root for them nonetheless. Very underrated show imo.

Remember when VI yelled at Silco, what did you do to my sister? And he replied with "I freed her." He literally did just that, just during his death did he finally achieve it and freed her in his final moments, saying what she needed to hear, accepting everything that she is flaws and all. Where she's inadvertently killed someone she loves again, saying sorry, bc as a jinx bad stuff happens bc of her, & what did silco do, he reassured his love for her. He never would've given her up, even for his dream. & finally the Don't cry, you're perfect. 🥲 and the rocket even had an eye similar to Silco.

I feel like Jinx’s tea party was a way to make Vi accept that she could never be Powder again, and accept her chaotic (mentally ill) nature as part of her that will never truly disappear no matter what happens going forward. Furthermore, I think that in season 2, we will see a lot of characters having to go through: ‘you have to accept who I am now, and not who I was’. Vi has to learn to accept Jinx we always be apart of her sister. Jayce will have to accept Victor’s changes physically and mentally and Victor has to accept/chose between either accepting his fate(mortality and death) or changing its outcome (becoming bound to the hexcore and machinery).

Silco's death... as awful and manipulative as he is, despite how terrible his influence was on Jinx, in his own deranged way he truly loved her, and he did provide her with the unconditional love she craved. Even when she shoots him, his final words aren't telling her to kill Vi, or complete their mission; he doesn't panic about his death and get her to help him, or chastise or question her. His last thoughts are to comfort her, make sure she knows she's loved, and to try to ease her pain. It is the complete opposite of her experience with Vi at the end of Act 1, where in her moment of grief and trauma, the person she loved most turned on her and made those feelings worse. Now this isn't to say Vi in a bad person or Silco is good. Vi was a child with a lot of trauma of her own that was grieving herself, and she lashed out. She regrets her actions and wants to make amends. Silco on the other hand, loves Jinx selfishly, wants to keep her to himself and is willing to lie, manipulate and control her to do so. He wants to shape her so that she will stay with him. This is not a healthy love and you can argue it may not be 'love' in a true sense. But in those moments he gives Jinx exactly what she craves, what she needs. Sometimes to manipulate, but sometimes because he cares. That is what hurts so much about the finale, not necessarily that Silco is redeemed, but the way his relationship, death and everything surrounding that final scene weighs on Jinx. The writing for this show is just incredible, the characters are so nuanced and the storytelling is unmatched in my opinion. I have no idea what to expect in Season 2 but I cannot wait until November.
