I had a 1965? Firebird with the Tremelo and a stopbar tailpiece. You could play it either way. I used the tremelo a lot. I was lucky with mine it always stayed in tune. It was my main guitar till the mid seventies when the strap came loose and it hit the floor and snapped the headstock off. I brought it 48th street NY for repair and the store made me an offer and I sold it to him. I wasn't aware at that time that headstock repairs were common. I regret selling it to this day,

You should also mention the Transitional Models made in 65-66, some had P90's, changes in the headstocks, body's of both styles, some non reverse have the reverse pickups then p90's. Tom Bucavac owns most likely a prototype 63, he had it on his Channel. A Local Florida Artist who used the non reverse model as his exclusive guitar who has since passed away, his Stage name was Rastus Kain you can look him up, you will see photos of him with the Guitar, and videos of him playing.

I was amazed to see someone say what I've always kinda thought: the two different Firebirds that I've had (sold one, kept one) have both been weird. The one I kept, I've tried to make work, but it's been a struggle. It won't stay in tune. The low-E string has never 'been right'. I've changed things and changed things, but I feel like it must be a dog. Too bad...

Firebirds are definitely something I’ve always wanted. I’m a little hesitant about the banjo tuners and the pickups but the ones with regular humbuckers and tuners just don’t feel like Firebirds. I use giant strings so I’m not sure they’ll even fit through the post. As for the pickups, it’s more the lack of aftermarket options plus I’ve never heard people play my sort of music with them (doom, stoner rock).

My Firebird Journey started with a YT vid Phil X playing a 1964 FB iii in Ember Red and I never looked back. 2017/2018 bought a '95 FB V from a local shop. I have cycled through other wild Gibson & Epi birds, and owned about 8 total but now down to that first one. It's still rad, but sadly just does not get played as much as it should. might put an actual Mini Humbucker in the bridge position. :)

I just got a Epiphone Thunderbird E1 Vintage Sunburst Electric Bass recently and it's my favorite bass. I did move the strap button so it sits more balanced when I play. Also it of course has normal bass tuners. But it's a gorgeous guitar. I just got an Epiphone SG also (6 string) and that is also one of my favorite guitars. I'd really like to try a Firebird next.

None of them V's, Explorers, Firebirds were popular til the 70's. Biggest FAN and user of FIREBIRDS/ Johnny Winter, Stones got em for free from Gibson, Brian had non reverse too, most likely given to. Us who lived thru those eras, more or less know the story. And Guitar Player magazine in the 70's especially had spot on information alot from the Artists themselves.

See Robert Baker's videos on Firebirds, he plays samples so you can hear how different the original pickups were to what has been produced by Epiphone/Gibson since, it may be why I used to see alot of Firebirds with the S for Seymore Duncan on them, he most likely replicated the original sounding pickups though I never owned one. I have an Epiphone Firebird 7, but the pickups are modified when I got it, it has hot rails and one other Duncan pickup in it, I should change it to some reproduction Firebird pickups but I do not play it much, Guitar to unbalanced for me, would have liked it better in the 70''s, when I was younger.

Les Paul's Log idea in practice: full sustain, style and humbuckers! Now only available as non- rosewood Epiphone. Custom models are not traditional thru body built. I bought my ebony Gibson Firebird V Historic new in Oct 2006 for $1270 (hard case included), dealer thought it was a Studio. Fierce, smooth and elegant, no balance or other issues.

Very good but can you elaborate a little about the Firebird in relation to the Hummingbird (1960) and the Dove (1962), and also its twin, the Thunderbird (1963), in other words the overall Gibson Bird theme of the 1960's. Notable Firebird players, except Clapton and Winter, are Brian Jones and Phil Manzanera, and possibly Marco Pirroni.

I love them! I own five of them (including the bicentennial, the zebrawood model, and an original 65 non-reverse model), as well as a couple of thunderbird basses (the bass version of a firebird). Mine have NEVER neck-dived, so I don't get all the hoopla about that, but maybe I've just been lucky.

@@ethanhusak Yeah, but your pelham blue is WOO HOO!!!! The only "neck dive" guitar I own is (believe it or not) a Stephen Stern Master Build Penguin. I solved that by having rubber (like the rubber on a tire tread) sewed onto the back of the strap I use with it, which causes the guitar to "stick" to my shoulder. Every guitar and bass I own has its own matching strap (due to my compulsivity, LOL). You might try doing that with the strap for your firebird.

You’re right, they aren’t balanced. Also the neck body relationship is different than any other guitar, so the neck sticks out more meaning many people play the wrong frets as the right notes are to the left of where their hand naturally goes. I also find them quite large and uncomfortable But if you like them, cool. My favourite variation is the Epiphone Mandobird, they made 4 and 8 string variations, and recently reissued a slightly different 4 string Mandobird

I think firebirds are pretty cool. They seem to carry a similar story to my jaguar. Fender tried a couple years then dumped it. Poor grunge garage bands adopted cheap "junk" in pawn shops then they got famous because of Nirvana and still, maybe a few people like johnny marr fans like them. I say play what you love. I love my jaguar. If i was a humbucker guy i might drift to firebirds.

Those Trans Am's were some of the Best selling Cars of the 70's, they were all over the Road back then, I knew someone who saved to buy a 79 brand new and paid Cash for it. Not to mention the 6 cylinder and formula 1's they sold too at a cheaper budget. I remember the 76 Trans am was reviewed by most auto magazines back then as best handling Car of the American Cars.

@@murdock8068 Oh, I am old enough to tell you there are ways to get Titles. But I had same sort of thing happen in 86, could have bought a 65 satellite off a friend, who also had other mopars, his ex wife had taken off with the Title and would not surrender it, so I could not buy the Car which was only 200.00, need a touch of body work, I was sad about that one. I could have got it and used some contacts in old car World and got some usable title for it, just did not. Or possibly contacted his ex wife and threw some money HER Way, she was not going to do anything with it anyway, just wanted to Snipe my Friend. he owned some nice cars, Charger 500, one of the Wing cars too, those are the ones I knew about. In the Restoration old car industry, they have a Thing they use called Rebody a Car, get the body, nice one of a lesser model but base body, and if you have say a Trashed rusty hemi body title Tag, number plates, it all gets switched I have seen several of these thru the years. I guess it is legitimate, but Law Enforcement frowns on it. But if no one is looking for a Stolen Car, it Bothers no one. The old car market is probably full of these Rebodies.
