A few interesting notes: Wan receives the elements in the exact order which then determined in what order the Avatar will be reborn as nation wise - he was the first "firebending Avatar", after him, he will be reborn in the air-nation, the second element Wan learned, then water, then earth. What I think might just be a coincidence rather than planned, but in Mandarin Chinese "Wan", depending on the tone, could mean "10 thousand" - which is exactly the cycle of harmonic convergence and eras of light and dark, as Raava repeated in this episode. I love these two episodes. They give so much depth and history and fill gaps of world building. It's just lovely.

My headcanon/theory is that Vaatu probably “won” at least once since Time Began (but bc Raava came back 10k years later and continually triumphed over Darkness from that point onward, he might not even consider it a victory, seeing as he doesn't seem to understand that she/Light truly can't be destoyed) and as a result, spirits were corrupted and attacked the first humans (and humans may also have been corrupted as well and then the first human vs spirit war happened) then the lion turtles let the humans take refuge with them. Over time, humans lost touch with each other, hence Wan not knowing there were other lion turtle cities, but the divide, fear and prejudice towards spirits was passed down through the generations of humans until Wan’s time and even throughout. And this could be a reason Raava knew so much of what would hypothetically happen if Vaatu were to win, because if he won before, Raava basically regenerated herself from him with the world in such a mess but the spirits were mostly neutral again with her around (but still resentful and hostile towards most humans given their possible history), but humans still lived in fear of the spirits which is why the lion turtles allowed them their respective element for protection if they needed to hunt for food. And honestly, I loved these episodes and these characters so much, I’m actually working on a larger scale fan fiction about Wan’s life as the avatar after battling Vaatu and closing the portals, even making my own ocs for the time period and collaborating with others too. I’m not sure if there ever will be a spin-off about wan’s life or not, but whether or not there will be, “The Journey of Wan” is my current passion project if you guys were ever interested in a fanmade continuation of his life lol Edit: you can find more info about my fic on the following social medias: thejourneyofwan-fanproject (tumblr), thejourneyofwanofficial (instagram). @@BhBc8f8right. I was thinking the same thing. Based on how vaatu is speaking it seems like he has not "won" yet. Would it make more sense that vaatu corrupted the humans' mind to attack the spirits, hence the sprits' distain to humans, and the lion turtles took in some human survivors that is why there seems to be just a few of them. Which also explains why the spirits despise all humans because they cannot physically see if a human is corrupted. But I would love to read op story, "The Journey of Wan" seems like a dope title specially since there was a book titled "journey of one" which is based on universal philosophy and guide to see the choices we make that we think are wrong but can be also loved.
@coleyjervase
Жыл бұрын
@@BhBc8f8 my comment did put more focus on the human side, but it could go both ways too. In a hypothetical timeline, since both humans and spirits were separated at one point, and Vaatu supposedly created one of the portals and letting the other spirits cross over, either the early humans with whatever civilization or territories they may have developed were threatened by the spirits claiming the land as their own possibly from Vaatu’s influence (not necessarily corruption to dark spirits, Vaatu’s a good manipulator after all as he did trick Wan into freeing him from Raava) and humans were just defending themselves, some humans may even out of spite attack them first as a show of dominance, thus some spirits have the idea that humans are greedy and have no respect for nature,etc when really all everyone is trying to do is to survive, including the spirits. I think there’s a lot of misunderstanding between the two parties, because it is possible for them to co-exist peacefully so long as it is proven especially after years of prejudice and possibly war between them.

The lion turtles gave the human their power so they can protect themselves against the spirits and survive. When Wan became the avatar he made almost everysingle spirit return into the spirit world so they did not need protection against the spirits anymore (That's also why they lived in the lion turtles shell, the forest and other regions were being used by the spirits) with the spirits gone AND the avatar being born the lion turtles did not need to anything more. People give Korra a lot of shit for how bad she fucks up during the show and being gullible, but Wan here looked at Vaatu and though "I bet this guy is legit" and then broke the universe by getting involved. And in the 10.000 years the cycle of avatars forgot to pass on that little tidbit about "why we don't touch the spirit portals at the poles" - by the time Roku comes around this entire knowledge seems to have compressed to "well, if you die in the avatar state the avatar cycle stops" skipping over the part where this is intimately tied to the fact that the avatar is bonded with the spirit of light. So either Wan was a bit dodgy with his successor (an airbender who we'd expect made spirital connection with him) or it got lost along the way by some of the other avatars not treating this as a priority information. Point being: Korra is a mess, but she's like mess no. 126.

Especially since those Avatars aren’t really as connected to how things are now. I mean, would Aang talk to Yangchen about the issues with the Fire Nation and the Hundred Year War when Roku, the Avatar before him, is more up to speed on the topic? You have to remember that the Avatar only speaks to their past lives when they need guidance on specific issues of their time that the people around them may not be able to answer, and you wouldn’t speak to a caveman about how to solve the issue of, collecting and redistributing tax dollars to different social programs.

One Tiny clarification: Raava doesn’t choose the next avatar. When she said "We are bonded forever", she meant it. She is fused with Wan's soul, and simply follows his reincarnation. This is what she means by "We will be together for ALL of your lifetimes, and we will never give up". Every avatar is an incarnation of Wan, and being able to talk to their past lives is an ability made possible by Raava. Side note: The power of the avatar state is not determined by past lives, but by Raava's power/strength.

You're right Spartan, Wan does have the Adam and Eve symbolism - it's the 'Trickster' archetype in mythology, the character who steals forbidden knowledge from the gods for humanity and is punished. That figure usually as a kind of bridge between the world of gods and men (sounds familiar right?). Characters like Hermes, Thoth, Anansi, Prometheus. Wan's story most closely resembles Prometheus: he literally steals fire from the gods and is banished and tortured by animals, just like Wan. Prometheus also encounters Pandora, another character Wan embodies who opens the Box and releases Sin into the world, just as Wan unleashes Vaatu. And just as Wan remains with Raava, the Spirit of Hope remains with Pandora. It's interesting to think about how much the entire concept of the Avatar is based on this trickster archetype, Aang especially. He's a playful prankster who mediates between the world of spirits/gods and men.

@vgfunman actually, we never really hear them talk about reincarnation for anyone other than the Avatar, unless it's brought up in the Kiyoshi books which I haven't finished yet. The Storm definitely implies that the new Avatar is born the second the old one dies, not concieved at that momeng, which seems more of a passing on than a reincarnation- though I guess it depends on when the creators felt life begins/when a soul becomes present, at conception, during pregnancy or at birth. But that's clearly not something we're supposed to think that hard about in the context of the show.

Raava doesn't choose who to bond with. When the Avatar dies, she simply goes to his next reincarnation. As she said, she'll be with Wan in all his next lives, so wherever his soul reincarnates, Raava goes.

So Pudgey, Raava doesn't 'choose' a new human to bond with - her and Wan's spirits were bound together permanently. The magical light we see leaving Wan's body at his death is their combined spirits moving on to be reborn in a new body.

Another interesting thing is the avatar cycle. It is fire air water earth. Which is basically the order in which Wan received his elements from the lion turtles. Seeing as Wan was basically a Firebender the next avatar would be an Airbender. Idk thought it was kinda cool to know 😅

Avatars are always creating problems. Aang allowed the fire nation to continue their reign for a 100 years, roku allowed them to takeover in the 1st place. But Wan takes the cake as he disrupted the balance of the whole world, allowing caose to be let loose

Answer of your 37:19 question "I wonder how she choses tho." - The order of Avatar ( Fire - Air - Water - Earth) is Which Wan's elements learning order .. Remember.. First of all he learned fire.. Then air.. Then water... Then earth.. Because of this.. If there is a fire avatar, you'll sure that next avatar will born in Air nomads.. After than that he will born at water tribes after after than that..He will born at earth kingdom... That's the avatar cycle order..

People love to say these episodes "ruin" avatar the last Airbender and some of the coolness to that story but i completely disagree. We know turtles can give abilities from atla and now we are left to assume that something happened to them and they decided to leave the info with dragons/badger moles/sky bison/ and the moon. The story of why the avatar cycle continues is so good imo. 9.9/10 episodes. Love the style too

Well personally I dislike these episodes because I think they completely fail to understand the concept on yin and Yang. One isn’t better than the other and both are equally important. But they just end up being light = good and dark = bad. For some reason raava losing control is bad for the world while vaatu losing control is good. And I also don’t like the cookie cutter spirits always shoved in the background. I really like the art and the idea they were going for I just think they didn’t nail the meaning and symbolism behind it.

I wouldnt say the lion turtles themselves "treated their cities with unequlity", i think its more like that isnt their purpose. As far as we're told, humans lived on their backs so the lion turtles could protect them from the spirits. The equality issue is probably directly due to the "rulers" of the city.

I think everything is great except for the spirits and raava/vaatu. I really like them expanding on the lord but personally I think all of the meanings fell completely short. I could go into more detail but basically I think the spirits are super boring they’re all just cookie cutter copy paste, while raava and vaatu fail to encapsulate yin and Yang and the meaning behind it. tbh, I also feel like the avatar origins here were a bit lucklaster. When you put aside the lore dropped here ( love it or not), the story and character work is pretty basic here. I feel like they could have done something more with Wan's character to sort of justify his status as the first avatar. Instead, he just seems like your average protagonist who lacks a personal conflict in the story
