What's with the tape on Dobie's ears? Doesn't that hurt the ears when they are docked? What's involved in the healing process? What is recovery time? They do look "tougher" but is it necessary to put the little guy in pain? Exceptional videos!!! If I wasn't busy in the summer time and you bred Dobies I would definitely buy one from you. Dobermans the world over, should call you "Master". 😃

I just brought home my first Doberman puppy yesterday so I was revisiting this video, I wanted to mention for any new Doberman owners or puppy owners in general who are crate training, I bought a toy called a huggiepup. It has a reusable heating pad and a little battery-operated heartbeat inside a plush dog. My dobie pup took immediately to it in his crate with the set-up John recommends here at night and didn't make a SINGLE whine for his first night and slept the whole night! HUGELY reccommend!

We had a week to prepare when we decided to buy the Cane Corso, so my girlfriend couldnt plan her work to fit better with puppy schedule. I had a month break from school and I mainly took care of the puppy for the first 3 weeks, I was exhausted went sleep at 9pm, took her out usually 2 times a night before waking up at 6. Potty training was my main thing, crates arent allowed here in Finland (only for travel, doctor) so didnt want the dog to take a piss on the floor. Probably took the dog outside for a wee 20 times a day, used the word "pee" in Finnish every time she did with high praises, not once we praised/gave a treat when it happened inside. I am so glad we went through the hassle, didnt took long before she learned to ask outside and did everything to hold until we were out(we live in 3rd floor). Shes 5 months old and accidents havent happened for a long time, if we visit my parents we can just open the door and say go for a pee, she goes outside and comes back immediately. Amazing dog she is and I would highly recommend everyone to go through the pain for the first weeks like I did, well worth it.

This guy is showing a great training approach. He is really aware of remaining positive to the extent that he is addressing possible future issues that can commonly arise-especially with certain dog breeds-BEFORE THEY BECOME ISSUES. And that is the best possible way-to PREVENT PROBLEMS BEFREO THEY ARISE. That way the dog has the opportunity to have a fully positive experience interacting with humans-especially family members and most importantly kids and toddlers. And his examples are so simple and easy it removes the intimidation that some people can feel because they have never training a dog before. The pup is relaxed, happy and consistently at ease and that is the best possible life for young puppies and dogs to have living with a family. The only other concern might be socializing pups and dogs with other animals and people so that they learn-in the same consistently, relaxed and positive manner he learns at home. These approaches are so simple and easy that just about anyone can handle training puppies to become calm, respectful and happy family members. I can say from experience as a gymnastics and martial arts coach that it is a very enjoyable activity for the humans as well as the pups. And teaching your kids to be consistently by using the same command words and hand gestures goes a long way towards helping dogs learns quicker but they will also learn their rank in the family hierarchy-which goes a very long way towards heading off issues as they get older and more confident. Some breeds are more demanding to train but it appears that Dobermans are not very demanding. This many may not be a professional dog training but he sets a great, clear example of how to do it. Well done.

Trainer here, just wanted to point out that the "prevent future problems" section is huge for ALL dogs, not just a Dobi, same with kittens, this teaches the pet that it is ok to be touched anywhere, which in turn makes it a million times easier for any vet to provide medical exams or treatments. It also help with grooming and as mentioned in this video, safety around kids.

Wow your the first person to get the feeding part right. Your the first person to do almost what I have always done at feeding time. Where we do things differently is that I do not use my hand to block or stop my puppy from eating his food in his food dish. I use my hand to feed the puppy. I put my hand into the food dish and I keep it there. I then allow or give the command for the puppy to go ahead and start eating. But you see my hand is in his food bow and my hand is full of food. The puppy eats only from my hand until all the food is gone. Your right in that putting your hand into the puppy's food bow takes away his food protection response. The puppy will come to see your hand as the giver of food the giver of good things and not something to bite. What you will have trouble with later is teaching your dog to eat his food without eating from your hand. Ha ha ha. Everyone in my family feeds the puppy like this not just me. It conditions your dog that everyone in your family is family and not something to bite. I use to live in Fairfield California. I now live in Thailand. I will be getting my new Doberman puppy in about 3 weeks. Have a great day.

Thanks again for sharing your experience and advice. So much of what you recommend is what we learned over time through trial and error. People sometimes don’t stop to think about what the puppy expects, or what it has been exposed to with its original pack. Our human ‘pack’ has different rules so the puppy must immediately begin learning the new rules and schedules, hopefully taught by patient, calm, consistent humans. You note that Dobes can be very dominant, if allowed. We found that our female Golden/Lab mix has always wanted to be alpha, and it sometimes has been quite a chore re-teaching the basic rules-not to her, but to my own family members who don’t keep up with the process of raising a puppy. I think this occurs when the rest of the family falls in love with a ball of fur, naturally, but then does not follow the behavior training. The dog then becomes confused about what is expected of her. Dogs need consistent relationships, including dependable humans who give the same message day after day. This makes a dog feel secure, and they will come to automatically behave as you want them to without lots of mischievously acting out. Dogs want to be accepted and happy, not confused by a lot of mixed messages. So, thank you for repeating that information in this video. It is one of the most important parts of raising a happy puppy.

Hi John & Arlo, Again.. lovely pup. I’m getting my pup at the turn of May/June. He’ll be 16 weeks old. Can you explain to me the purpose of splitting the crate/pen into two sections? Thanks.
@vanessabennett7922

It's for potty training, so the puppy doesn't make a corner of the crate his a potty spot. You dont want the puppy to get in the habit of peeing in the crate. I never split the crate for my doberman, but some puppies need the extra help.

@@vanessabennett7922 Thanks, but how does the puppy know to use your designated section?

Daniele Iannarelli the separation only allows him access to part of it. There isn't an option.

Excellent video John! That close up of him on the bed, so cute and those big chunky legs 😄 they have to be the most beautiful breed of dog. Good to see Arlo progress so much in such a little amount if time, good job. Seriously. Great tips and info. I would love to see how a vet visit goes. I've seen so many dogs at my local vet with such bad behaviour in the waiting room, makes it a dangerous environment for owners and pets sometimes, Would be cool to see any tricks you have for acclimatising Arlo to being around strange dogs in the vet. 👍 just an idea. Keep up the good work.

Hi, my compliments and congratulations for your new pup! I have an observation. A a 3month old Doberman owner, I was advised to touch her nose, lips and tail while she's awake and not relaxing. The problem with doing that when the dog's relaxing is that you could wake him up and he would associate that in a negative way. Anyway, thank you so much for your channel, it's also thanks to you if I now own a beautiful Doberman!

My Doberman is 3 years old now in human years and I wish I could’ve taught him how to be less aggressive but my Doberman got loose and when we found her she was pregnant also so I’m trying to not make such a demon again luckily It was just one dog

What a great informational video! We are on our 2nd doberman (she'll be 6 in April) and she is an absolute joy in our lives! We have brought her to multiple obedience classes and she just learns so quickly - they really are incredibly smart and eager to learn new things. They are just so full of love and loyalty, you can't explain it to someone that doesn't own a doberman! We can't wait to see more videos of your little Arlo, he's adorable and full of energy and you are a really good daddy for him.

I never had any issues with the dobermans acting like an alpha. It is more the lab mixes my family has owned acted that way. Especially with the girls of my family (My mom and i). They never bossed us around. More liked walked with or in front of us. Also sitting between us and any man in the house that is not my dad and younger brother. The dobermans just want to be pet and fed.

Still scratching my head why doberman pups owners have the pups ears surgically altered and tails cut off. This was outlawed in UK, Australia and NZ in the 70s. Such great dogs.

Why did you choose to crop the ears and tail? Was that done by the breeder? If so, why?
