This is really incredible. The stories are shifted around a bit and some major differences from the most common versions-- for example to the Mexica the four Tezcatlipocas are usually considered to be Tezcatlipoca, Quetzalcoatl, Xipe Totec and Huitzilopotchli. Quetzalcoatl is traditionally the second sun and Chalchiutlicue was the fourth sun, and the rain of fire was sent by a moping Tlaloc out of anger at humans for their continued pleas for rain. But there are many versions of the same stories, probably because the mythologies of many different cultures were slowly merged over thousands of years. Such as how Huitzilopotchli was supposedly birthed by Coatlicue and then killed Coyolxhauqui and the southern stars, but then he's also an original Tezcatlipoca born of Ometeotl? You'll go crazy looking for consistency in Mexica stories, but then that's the nature of the oral tradition. The "official" version is just the one some Spanish priest eventually wrote down!

This is by far one of the best animation films I've ever seen... to bring those old sacred images to life and make them move is an amazing achievement in itself; there is no point arguing about the "theology/cosmogeny" (or absence thereof) of the story itself... no one can really argue that this is not a completely awesome and unique piece of animation, (regardless of our own individual beliefs) unless they themselves could make a better one.

And this creation too, will end.” I really love this video, and to think I never would have seen it if it wasn’t assigned by my Native American Studies professor is disheartening! There should be a Percy Jackson-style graphic novel that goes into the Tezcatlipocas lore. For everyone this story is new to: Every part of this story is normally told by itself as stand alone tale, meaning everything that happens here can be greatly elaborated on and has so much more nuance to it. Personally I find Xolotl and his two main stories to be inspiring and enheartening in a way I have found no other figure in any other story to be like. This comment is not a good place to lay out the details but even though Xolotl's stories seem sad, and they are, especially once you start picking up on the nuance, Xolotl persists through his constant, inherent inferiority and he works to help all of those who end up in a position like his own, at times that being all of humanity. Xolotl continually brought fire to man and in many ways he still does. If how he was presented in this video resonated with you even a little bit, I ask that you please read or listen to his stories in full, they are not long and I think you will gain much for it.

Jose Francisco Medeiros and europeans brought disease and genocide wars to the americas. Up to 90% of the precolumbian population was killed off through disease, exploitation, and warfare. First virgins were never a prize like they were in Europe, 2nd cannibalism was very rare and only done on special occasions, 3rd slaves in Aztec times were much more better treated then in Europe, 4th... 250,000 slaves is a load of horse manure. You know nothing... because of the European invasion nearly 100 million Native Americans were killed. So where is a similar number found in Aztec history?

You guys are sick, I'm glad this religion didn't expand across the world. We would be having human sacrifices and other disgusting stuff today if it lived. Nobody is saying that Europeans didn't do anything wrong, we know that. But you have to stop acting like the Aztecs never did anything, they sacrificed and murdered anyone that wasn't Aztec, they acted just like Europeans, conquering and pillaging village after village. They sacrificed so much people that it was one of the reasons for the collapse of their Empire. Unlike you people, we aren't ones saying that human sacrifice is a good thing.

@@olympia5758 This religion still exists and it's being teached to native youth today. Aztec Philosophy was based on science, Aztec religion was on the path that was moving away from Gods. No.22 - Losing the video images was perhaps not by chance. Noting how the problem runs from 22:22 to 23:22, it's very precise and unlikely to be random.

Very interesting that in this version the Turkey people eat corn but in another, marsh reed. Anyone with relevant information would be greatly appreciated!

@@myboy_ well the man is a god of war, but he’s noted as being very heroic for the Mexica well as heroic as an Aztec god can get when you forget the blood sacrifice, now Tezcatlipoca was done right fucker is very chaotic

Do not feel bad, spirits in the aztec mythology die and resurrect all the time, Quetzalcoatl died and resurrected when gathering the bones, the rest of the lords will resurrect later to rule their respective cities and temples until they die and resurrect again or exile themselves
