So true. The only time "competetive" MP is fun is when somebody is completly abusing the system, which is the exact opposite of what most MP mods try to do. Just get 4 or 5 friends and sit in VOIP and shoot the shit for the first 3 years of the game before you team up to defeat whatever major has become the most threatening, or just use game rules to make your intended enemy more dangerous. I really doubt HoI was ever ment to be played in an E-Sport-like fashion and trying to make it one would be a massive blunder for Paradox...

I played an actual role play server once with Kaiserreich mod. I played as Siam just because I'm Thai and I wanted to play minor. I was in an Asian discord room and talked with Qing about how I wanted peace with him so we can protect ourselves from Imperialists aggression and that my ambition is only Indochina. Japan came in to call me for a 1-1 talk and ask me to join his Co-Pros, saying that I have no choice anyway since no one is going to help me and that I will be his ''ally" and have a say in things. OfCourse, I accept then he went to war with Germany 2 years into the game (I have 3 mils) because I convinced him about leaving Qing alone and Germany is a greater threat (A.O.G. was still a thing so more than 100+ divs in Asian colonies). Then I got lend-lease from Russia (Who hated Japan's gut after losing the whole Siberia) cause I convinced him about having same enemies (Germany) and lend-lease from the U.S. (I sent 1 marine division in the civil war and help liberate Seattle somehow) because he is grateful. The tension of stalemate in Indochina and Malaya is palpable, Germany naval invasion of Hatyai cause me 12 divs and a total collapse of southern army, forcing me to mobilize police force as a stop gap measure, sinking of KMS Dresden ending Germany invasion threat and bombing of Bangkok. Was a very fun game with 25 people in the server.

As someone that plays hardcore competitive hoi i always say that the core issue with rp games is: *Hoi4 was NOT made to be an rp game, it was made to be an combat game.* Sure you can role play but in the end of the day hoi4 was made for combat, politics are barely in the game, economic system dosent exist , and even the way time passes in hours is there only because of combat. You can rp for an few years but eventually war *will* happen, and that makes hoi4 return to its original state or being an war game where your military is the most important factor. I also have seen so many good rp games turning south because someone gave an BS excuse and joined an war/intentionally killed an lobby. Ironically the best Paradox game to roleplay would be Victoria 3, since there economy and politics matter. But you have execelent production quality man, very good video

Coming from SAMP, I realise that HOI4 RP has zero idea what powergaming is. Powergaming is the first and foremost rule of an RP scenario and hoi4 RPers break it constantly. The simple fact that you go into an RP game where you tryhard to reach your specific goal and use every advantage to help you is powergaming. There's no lorebuilding, no "character development", nothing, it's just tryharding but with a veil of diplomacy added on top.

What puts me off not only from hoi4 multi, but also hoi4 in general, is how it's less of a sandbox and more of a railroad type of thing. Its crazy how this is applicable to basically any paradox game. The thing is that at the end of the day every paradox game is about fighting and snowballing, to an extent. You would think games like Stellaris would be better for roleplaying because of how customisable your empire can be, but I found it to actually be the opposite. In any game there will always be a "best" option but against real people not using the best options will just get you shit on which is smth noone really wants. Noone wants to roleplay as the weak empire, everybody wants to be the strong one, atleast eventually. And as you said, its often times not even malicious, some players are just better than others and will always dominate. What helped me the most in finding fun in roleplay was actually to get comfortable with losing. Making a last stand against all odds. Staring defeat in the eyes and not budging. Seeing your empire rise and fall. It makes for a great story on its own. Which makes hoi4 roleplay so tricky for me since a lot of people insist on the "historrical" roleplay, which basically just means feeling entitled to get the same results/wins as in real history.

As both a competitive and casual enjoyer of hoi4 MP since 2016, I've never seen a video that really encapsulated how insanely frustrating but simultaneously amazing a hoi4 game can be. And trust me, for a very long time it didn't matter if you played historical games or RP you would face desyncs, major players lagging, exploiting bullshit that forces a reload of the save, or god forbid the host goes MIA out of nowhere. However, its all toughed out because the "golden game" you have once in a lifetime truly is the most fun you'll ever have. I don't miss this game these days because I cant think of a worse way to waste my time than wait 3 hours in a lobby for a game to start then have it not start - but it truly is in a league of its own in so many ways. I also want to say that I never played RP games because they're literally just competitive games in disguise, and the few meta kids with their meta heavy tanks and autistic hyperfixations they will crush literally everybody who isn't in the "know-how" on how to make good divisions. Good divisions is a hard barrier that will cause you lose no matter what to people like this, they don't even need to play the great game of diplomacy. The casual-competitive divide is so incredibly strong in this game that there should (theoretically) never be any overlap whatsoever. What people are creating in historical games absolutely crushes these games.

The downside of roleplaying in HOI4 is somebody has to be the Nazis and . . . welp . . .
@zackbobby5550

The main reason that it always becomes competitive is simply because it is multiplayer and people want to continue playing. All those cool formable nations require you to gain land, land you have to take from somebody else. That other nation is controlled by a human player who, understandably, doesn't want to give up any land as they ALSO need that land for THEIR formable nation. When you have 2 people who require the same chunk of land, and need to fight over it, and they are both highly motivated to win as these scheduled long HoI IV games are a massive investment of time and effort, it's bound to get sweaty. That's not really anybody's fault, but it is the nature of having a game where everybody is highly motived to win. It's going to be competitive. Nobody wants to go through the first few years of HoI that are boring as fuck building up their nation just to sell important land, merge with another country, lose a war, etc. All of those things might be more realistic/better for the "roleplay", but who wants to give up hours and hours of playing HoI on 2 speed without putting up the best fight they can?

it's a thing that happens in DarkRP, Roblox Border RP and nearly anything that brands itself as an "RP" game, these people don't actually know what an roleplay is. They think you can just add a ton of features to mimic the game and then have people narrate it, but usually that attracts people who actually play the game, they don't wanna roleplay, they just wanna play the game with added elements. Real roleplays often have you imagining or self-managing the things there.

I just want chill ppl who are really for the story and geopolitics. I don't want these sweaty tryhard Dancus wannabes to ruin my storybuilding experience.

I have never played competative mp only rp and those games will always stick with me esspecially my first on e where i played as romainia i only had 40 hours at the time and me along with italy and greece (late game hotjoin complete idiot didnt know how to make a frontline) took over all of the balkans the middle east (up to iran) and took stalingrad and moscow while the germans were stuck in stalemate for 3 years against the soviets and polish on the warsaw river i also had the soviets in complete shock being unable to take bessarabia from me (he had around 1000 hours) our amazing game soon collapsed as 42 rolled around with the west decalring war on us and sweating us although the brave defenders of the 32nd 51st and the 27th infantry divsions held bucherest to the last man against the american 2nd heavy tank divsion and the 21st and 30th french mechanized divisions (yes i remeber the numbers) the game ended after i capped in july after 2 months of seige in bucherest Since im going through my mp game memories im gonna put a few more notable mp game memories here One game playing as the commie estonia (my fav nation in mp) i was described as "the soviets pissed off wife who wanted a divorce the day after i got married" it was accurate the soviet player went troatky and started the civil war as i was taking lithuania with his pre civil war troops then the civil war pops all of my backline becomes trotskys playground all my troops are killed with me making a last line around tallin despretly holding out while cussing him out for being and idiot and not warnimg me (it was also his first time doing trotsky path which i also cussed him out for) after i had been holding out around talin for 2 years he won the civil war and then the germans invaded inatatly as soon as it ended and i begged them to make me a puppet as i didnt want anything to do with the soviet player anymore my rwquest was denined however to rub salt in my wounds he made latvia a puppet and gave it estonia in the peacedeal the game ended after that Another game as estonia i got the batlic ssr done with belarus given to me aswell me and the soviet player held out on the stalin line for 3 years and while we were doing that i decided to meme and build uo the mighty estonian navy by building two superheavy battleships i did so and managed to meme naval invade berling with them however after 1944 came around that game ended Thats all i got id liked to see anyone elses storys of mp games if you wana

One thing i hate is that every peace deal they annexed everything, I mean, good roleplay is you take a little bit, then war repairation,.. bla bla, you just annex all, it just lame and boring.

i remember playing my first rp hoi4 game months ago it literally felt just like how you described (which i'm going to sum up with one word): hell, and it had few rules except it had to be mostly historical we had to wait for one guy who wanted to play as germany for *an hour* and the other peeps who reserved never joined nor had they responded when the host dm'd them (at least, not as fast), then the game started and it wasn't too bad, until sometime in 1937, the game lagged and the host had to afk for half an hour BEFORE it happened, without warning, and we had to play at 1 speed for what felt like an eternity i want to remind y'all one thing: the pre-game (or however you wanna call it) was set up a week earlier in discord

A good RP game made by paradox would be stellaris, you litterally get a chance to write your own history and craft your civilisation as you see fit which gives alot of free choice to do where as people who rp in hoi4 may try and keep to what happened in ww2 or follow a way that happened irl to justify their goals, though stellaris can also be abit finicky at times and good players may dominate aswell it's still a solid pick espically when you get too the end game
@SilasPT

Honestly i think that's a inherent flaw with "RP" multiplayer video games is there is always gonna be someone better at just "playing" their nation. More mechanics in a RP game were you have a "goal" (even if made up by yourself) also means more oppertunities for people to outplay their contemporaries though the use of those mechanics.
@Deaglan753
Жыл бұрын
@@SilasPT there are also origins in stellaris, for example the "here be dragons" origin spawns a sky dragon in your capital that has 50K power, granted it can easily be killed but if you build a decent size fleet aswell as defences then you can easily defend your capital and later down the line end up controlling he dragon There is also scion which makes you a puppet of a fallen empire and will periodically give you OK stuff for free, Another thing in stellaris is you don't know how strong someone is entirely, or how big they are, or even where they are until you find them, you need to use your spies to figure out if they will be easy or not

im not sure how you can complain about roleplay being competetive while admitting to wanting to roleplay, as your first chosen example, a "greek empire conquering everyone around me" the games entire purpose is combat and war, without a war, nothing you will ever do matters in the game. every single nations ambitions flavours and ideas in the game are focused around war. and your first roleplay campaign would focus around war. war is by nature competetive - its destroy or be destroyed. i dont understand at all how one can complain. sounds to me like you wanna roleplay the greeks but if someone else wants to roleplay the ottomans the game becomes "competetive" and you lose, so if youd prefer to write a script for all players, or restrict peoples combatetiveness by making arbitrary rules like "since the turks are so weak after war of independence, their troops have to suck in X or Y manner" then well, youre just re-defining the core aspect that the game already delivers with flavor "again" i guess my critique is that roleplay is not about the basis of the game itself but what you end up doing with it, if youre coming into HoI IV lobbies expecting complex diplomacy or treaties etc on a game thats literally "build army, declare war" or expect human players to not optimize their force (which is completely in line with the interest of the country aka the RP?) then im not sure how anyone can help you enjoy this game. try roleplay as neutral switzerland for a hoi lobby and see how much fun you have not being competetive with anyone and not expanding, because in all honestly, HoI just *might* not be a game to "roleplay" that much in. the best players literally can do is can the efficiency of going historical paths and allow for memegames, because theres quite literally nothing else to alter how the game and the countries play
@FF-pv7ht
Жыл бұрын
and w "end up doing w it" i mean one could literally make meme divisions and send them around the map for political conferences, one could orchestrate "scripted" civil wars via coordinating spy systems, one could make it a fucking movie if one wanted. so in that sense the games basis isnt "limiting", its just not ment to be a scripted movie because thats rather boring... so one can absolutely roleplay against the games very makeup but the fact that noone seems to do it is very telling for how enjoying that is, and in that sense you cant really blame the playerbase for not "roleplaying" when that isnt fun

I have a few friends who like HoI4 and we get together from time to time to play RP. Yes, someone has problems with the Internet, and in principle time goes on for quite a long time, because we all need to have time to do everything, but in general it's fun. The most important thing in playing with friends is that there are no hard feelings and arguments (most of the time). That's why I avoid playing with strangers, at least in similar games where PvP is a priority.

This, most people's complaints (competetive, RP or regular MP) can be fixed by just playing with friends. You can't expect a good game with just random people you find, without crawling through tons of shit first

This video summed up my problems with Hoi4 multiplayer in general. I love the game, and can beat the AI, but I’m not huge into competitive. I normally don’t even change my div templates unless the enemy I’m fighting needs it (Like Germany in the base game). My PC is pretty bad, so I don’t want to hamper other players’ times, and I don’t have discord so most well regulated games are off limits. That leaves me either with Competitive Servers, where everyone’s a sweat and there are 20000 rules to keep me playing exactly like the admin wants, or RP, where people are still competitive but my game lags horribly. Add that to the fact my Hoi4 hasn’t been doing multiplayer correctly since a few updates ago, and the fact that that same update caused some of my mods (Cold War, OWB, Great War, etc.) to crash on boot, and I just don’t really have the ability to do Hoi MP. Great video for summarizing the problems in Hoi MP. Keep it up! -J

"Most people see roleplay and competitive as direct opposites of one another" and there's the main problem. I can roleplay but still 'play to win'. That said if I set a lofty goal like the destruction of global communism and I can't flip them via other means... I am probably still attacking the USSR (or whatever countries go commie) even if the Soviet player has a really strong game going and it is essentially suicidal. ... likewise I love nothing more than isolationist United States. Just going "NOPE" and sitting in my corner all game unless someone is stupid enough to pick a fight with me is fun. How? I can set simple goals like that and still have fun not knowing if I will be dragged into a war or not... and best of all the other players having no idea what I am planning. They see Alf Landon win and are like "Here we go" then... no, no civil war. Just building my economy first, military second. ... well she is going to go the allied path and take out whoever is a threat to democracy- NO RON PAUL WENT BACK IN TIME AND IS WEARING ALF'S SKIN Also a hundred rules is why I never join big games, competitive, RP, or whatever. I don't care. It is always just me and my friends jerking around with one another so six people tops.

This is why I stick to purely text-based Nation Roleplay as opposed to doing it through a video game that isn't designed for that.
