That's amazing to still have the original pilot trailer. My great uncle Archie Robin was animator and sketch artist working by the side of Walt Disney on the early 1930s first Disney animated films. These early year classics are priceless talent.

I was born in '75. I really got a kick, that Barney ate his lunch in the pilot, as he does in every episode. The joke that never gets old. And even in real life, there's always some joker who steals someone's lunch. It's still funny and used in sitcoms today. It's one of those things that tickles your nostalgia bone.

Didn't realize June Foray was the original voice of Betty Rubble. Hanna-Barbera wasn't impressed with that audition and the part went to Bea Benaderet instead (still the best Betty IMO). But, June wasn't unemployed for long as she received a phone call from Jay Ward shortly afterwards. Well you know the rest of that story. RIP, June Foray!

I'm 56 & grew up on Flintstones reruns in the early 1970's & still love watching them today! But i've never had any patience or appreciation for any of the later remakes either. The original 1960-66 series is to me the only REAL Flintones!! On the pilot: without question i think the official remake of The Swimming Pool episode 2 yrs later was FAR better! To me Alan Reed was the best most authentic Fred Flintstone ever. Something interesting i noticed: they say Daws Butler was Fred but i think it sounded more like the actor Herb Vigran. He was actually later credited with some voices on The Flintstones (i think he voiced a policeman in at least 1 episode) & i think later in the 1970's he occasionally appeared in The Brady Bunch too. And someone else mentioned how dark they made Fred in that pilot- i agree, it looked strange. As i said - maybe it's only because i'm used to the normal voices, but i think the normal ones are better than any others were. I always thought Bea Benaderet was far better than her replacement Gerry Johnson was- but since Benaderet died, they had no choice- it woulda been horrible to try to write Betty Rubble out instead!
@scottwheeler6958
4 жыл бұрын
*oops, i needed to correct myself: i was wrong- i googled to find Bea Benedaret lived far past her role of Betty Rubble, quitting the role in 1964 & it was in 1968 during her time co-starring in Petticoat Junction where she died during production of that show

Daws Butler temporarily replaced Mel Blanc at the beginning of season two because Mel had a near fatal auto accident in January 1961. The soundtracks for five episodes were recorded while Mel was recuperating {January-March 1961}. When he recovered enough to record his dialogue with the rest of the cast {beginning that April}, he did it from a special hospital bed set up in his room, as he was in a body cast throughout most of 1961.

Daws Butler as Fred uses the same Ralph Kramden parody voice he used at Warner Brothers in three “Honeymousers” shorts. Those are grease pencil marks, noting the scene numbers on screen, and what's being animated. This was a "rough cut" that was shown to ad executives and their clients when Joe Barbera "shopped" this demo reel around Madison Avenue in the winter of 1960, in order to "sell" the series to advertisers [as a result, two sponsors "bought" the show for the fall of 1960: Miles Laboratories {Alka-Seltzer, One-a-Day} and R.J. There was supposed to be a "Fred Jr." at the beginning of the series (as seen in Ed Benedict's original model sheets of the characters; he looked a lot like "Ubble-Ubble", the "cave kid" seen in "RUFF AND REDDY"), but he disappeared before production began. In the fall of 1962, Joe Barbera was planning to have Wilma give birth to "Fred Jr."- until he talked to the head of Ideal Toys (they were going to market the "Flintstones baby doll"), who informed him that girl dolls outsold boy dolls. Joe quickly changed his mind, and said it was going to be a GIRL, after all. A "name the baby" contest was responsible for the new arrival being named "Pebbles".

If Fred sounds like Ralph Kramden, then Barney sounds like Ed Norton! I think Alan Reed WAS Fred. I like Mel Blanc's Barney the best. And Bea Benaderet's Betty the best! Incidentally, did you notice Wilma had a blue hue in her skin?
