I'm starting to think Doug is so good at this, that he purposefully overlooks things to get more comments haha. Partly joking, but does he not realize the gauges are meant to mimic Harley gauges? The gear selector is meant to mimic a handlebar. The side step is meant to mimic Harley tailpipes. If you rode a Harley, this was supposed to be the most Harley a truck could be. Doug usually nails these types of design themes but I was surprised by this one. Still an amazing truck and a great video!

My father owned a Ford dealership in Vermont in the 90s and 2000s. He hated these trucks. Ford required all franchisees to carry at least one on the lot, but as a RWD only truck, they were impossible to move in a snowy, mountainous state. Each year, he'd immediately run discounted ads in NY, CT, and NJ newspapers to get it off his lot as soon as possible.

Ford's mistake was not realizing that certain areas have their own markets. So many good cars fail because of this. Instead of splashing it across every market in every area, they should have concentrated sales in areas they researched as being prime target audience markets. In my opinion, if they had done this - or in any similar brand and circumstance - their vehicle would have flourished in the chosen markets and gained popularity. rather than failing overall due to being spread everywhere.

@@AlexGray I have an 03 Harley F150 and it's honestly been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. It's never stranded me and the only non-maintenance repair it's needed was rear axle bearings. It developed a whine and we found some water contamination in the fluid that corroded the bearing races a bit. It didn't even harm the gears, despite mine having about 100hp in mods and a punisher valve body (shift kit) that bangs gears pretty firmly. Over 200k on it and it still has the original AC, water pump, alternator, supercharger, etc. and it''ll start up and drive across the country tomorrow although it would be cheaper to fly first class then to put almost $100 worth of super unleaded (required) in it every 200-300 miles:-). It doesn't even leak a drop of oil. Cons with mine are that being first and AZ, then TX and now FL truck, the sun ate up the window seals, so I've had to replace the seals and clean the interior every time it decided to leak. Then again, my bad for parking it out in the hot sun for 20 years, including a few hail storms and 3 hurricanes. Still looks good and will still leave rubber at the stop light. They are limited as to what mods you can do power wise as it's basically a stock F150 engine with a blower added, so 450 HP is kind of the safe limit according to the forums. Some go higher but it's risky as they can break connecting rods if pushed too hard, although there are several popular vendors who sell crate engines built to handle upwards of 900 HP if you want to throw money at it. Engines are around $6-$7K but the supporting mods will easily double that (injectors, fuel pumps, transmission, differential, tuning, etc.). If my engine ever finally dies, I'll probably go that route. It's not as luxurious as the new ones and of course doesn't have the technology or fuel economy, but it's still unique, peppy and fun to drive. If you find one that's never been modded and drive it normally, I think it would run forever. Even if you beat on it you can get well over 200k-300k on them so long as you do your maintenance on time.

My father worked for a parts supplier making interior trim and bezels during the production of this truck. There are several more hidden Harley symbols around this vehicle. One in particular I can recall was a an interior light lense that had the Harley logo embossed in it. Kind of disappointed you didn't review the 2003. It's the superior of the 2 supercharged models IMO. The theming was so much cleaner with the silver and black. I had a black 03 with a 4/6" drop on 22" replicas of the factory 20" wheels. Was an absolutely beautiful truck and got so much attention. It has a mid level motor build with 425whp/515wtq. I never lost to a viper truck. It was a burnout machine! Sadly on Christmas Eve 2015ish it was at a shop that was broken into and completely ransacked. The interior was trashed when they ripped the stereo out and they dented and scratched the exterior. It was put back together but it was never the same. Could never find those wheels again. Miss it every day. Such a badass truck. A lot of people don't mention you could actually use these as a truck. I towed my 20' enclosed car hauler and boats across the WA passes regularly. That was ultimately the reason I went with the Harley F150. Viper trucks and Silverado SS are pretty pansie when it comes to actual truck stuff. When I eventually sold it I got $1k less than I bought it for after owning it for 10 years and 100k miles. Can't argue with that. I bet it would be $10k more to buy one today in the same condition.

I agree with the Harley Davidson F150 being the more practical version of the Lightning, and in my opinion, it was also more special and unique than the quad cab version of the SRT10. That was just the Viper V10 and 4 speed auto from the one tone Ram installed into a regular four door pick up.

Doug, you're underselling the 2011 F150 Harley Davidson trim and you are missing out on a wonderfully quirky car, err, truck. My dad had one and actually talked about getting me this generation F150 Harley Davidson trim off of a coworker for my first car, ended up falling through. But, the point being, the 2011 Harley F150 is just as quirky as this one. For starters, it went far beyond just an appearance package. It's been YEARS since I've seen the truck, so some of the details are fuzzy, but from what I can remember; it had custom leather seats with Harley Davidson emblems, it was this super dark black leather with stitching exclusive to that trim, and it looked really nice. The center dash screen, in a 2011 pickup truck, had its own custom Harley Davidson intro movie. The center infotainment system also had its own thing if I remember right. It had ambient lighting with like a dozen different colors, again, in a 2011 pickup truck. It also had the Harley logo on the bed liner. Each one had an individually numbered plague on a completely unique to the trim center console. It had the same 6.2L V8 that the Raptor had. It didn't have a supercharger but it did make 410HP and sound amazing out of a very similar side exit dual exhaust. It was the first semi-successful generation of the luxury truck. It had an MSRP of $70K and came with things that no other automaker was doing on pickup trucks at the time. It had all the bells and whistles, heated and cooled front seats, heated back seats, it had like a 5" touchscreen that looked decent enough for the time in 2011. It also came factory with this massive subwoofer under one of the rear seats, which also had custom leather and Harley logos embroidered on them. The doors had their own special trim as well. This was also the first generation of Ford truck to have the stairstep on the tailgate that is hilariously quirky and surprisingly useful. It's such an amazingly quirky truck that was an absolute market FAILURE. I loved it though, and still kinda bummed I didn't get the generation of the truck featured in this video as my first car lol EDIT: forgot to mention, the pockets on the back of the front seats weren't just normal pockets. They had zippers. Chrome zippers. With a custom harley davidson grab handle thing. That truck had so many tiny, hilarious quirks like that that I'm surely forgetting. OH It had a similar leather cover for the owners manual as well if I remember right.

The HD F150 isn't a crew cab because it would overlap with the Lightning - the whole reason why this truck existed was because SOOOOOOOOO many people complained that there WASN'T a crew cab Lightning. Another difference is the Lightning's limited towing capacity(rated anyway, lol), in spite of being a very deliberate performance truck, SOOOOOOOOO many people wanted to tow with them. So Ford offered the HD F150 was the crew cab Lightning F150 tow rig that so many people wanted. We saw this same thing play out with the SRT10 Ram too, initially they were only offered as a 6-speed manual regular cab, cuz performance truck(!!!) - but, once again, SOOOOOOOOO many people wanted a crew cab SRT10 that they could tow with, so, a year later, Dodge adds a crew cab with an auto trans and actual towing capacity. No, really, the regular cab 6-speed weren't rated to tow from the factory, it's literally an "NA" rating. A pickup truck with a 500HP 8.3l, and the tow rating is "NA", I mean C'MON GUYS! The auto crew cab has a 7500lb towing capacity, it's a REAL truck! (I mean, the only thing stopping you from towing with the reg cab is you; just be gentle with that clutch! Maybe go ahead and upgrade to a twin disc first...) Chrysler would still make a similar mistake with the 1st gen SRT8 Grand Cherokee; they had a totally bitchin' center exit dual exhaust out back. Guess what a totally bitchin' center exit dual exhaust gets in the way of? A damn tow hitch... the SRT8 GC hasn't had a center exit exhaust since the 1st gen lol, the 2nd gen increased towing capacity from a measly 3500 to an actually usable(for a fullsize SUV) 5000lbs too. The manufacturers finally started getting the hint, we didn't just want trucks/SUVs that were "fast and sporty", we want trucks/SUVs that are fast, sporty, AND can still do some damn work beyond just hauling luggage! Think about the kind of buyers in the market for these things, they're often people that own jet skis or boats, dirt bikes, side-by-sides, maybe even a Fox body drag car, stuff like that. Why not have a hotrod tow rig that's as cool as what you're towing?. I mean, we don't need to be able to take these things through a construction site(insert cringe shot of Jeremy Clarkson taking the F150 Lightning through a mud hole, "cuz it's a truck"), but it'd be nice to at least be able to tow a boat with them lol. While I've generally never felt one way or the other about HDs(I 'get' why they are what they are, I'm just not much of a cruiser guy), I always LOVED the HD Ford pickups growing up - they just looked so good! The "Harley Lightning" is awesome of course, and the "two tone pumpkin" Super Duties are a classic! And, to be honest, with how gaudy SO many 'special edition' and co-branded vehicles have looked over the years, I was always impressed with the execution of the HD Ford trucks, always thought they did a quite good job of making them look like a "factory custom" without being totally corny or gaudy(and that's saying something considering how many damn HD logos there are in these trucks lol ...I might've debadged it if I had one lol). Also, there's ZERO excuse for the 'cool factor' being the lowest in that list!!! A supercharged HD F150 is one notch below Lightning cool, and a Lightning is as cool as an SRT10!

The 4R100 is a robust enough transmission, but they are less than stellar out of the box. In typical Ford (of this era) fashion, they truly do need a revised valve body, which is available (Punisher). That corrects most of the lackadaisical shifting and odd behavior and it isn't expensive. If you want bigger power, a competent transmission shop should be able to do a stout built on it, there are plenty of 500+ WHP Lightnings out there holding up just fine.
