We cover the life of Justinian the Great who inherited a fractured, diminished Roman Empire and made it his life’s ambition to restore its glory.
Through military conquests in Africa and Italy, he partially realized that ambition, but his greatest success lay in the architectural restoration and legal reforms that occurred under his rule.
Justinian was born in 482 CE in the city of Tauresium, in Macedonia. His was a peasant family with very few prospects. However, Justinian’s mother Vigilantia was the sister of a member of the Imperial Roman Bodyguard. This man, Justinian’s uncle Justin, adopted the boy and brought him to Constantinople. There Justinian received a level of education that was well beyond anything his parents could have provided. He learned Roman history, jurisprudence, and theology. In his late teens, Justinian was selected as a member of the candidates, which was the personal bodyguard of emperor Anastasius.
In 518, Anastasius died. Justinian’s uncle, Justin became the new emperor. Over the course of his 9-year reign, Justinian served as a close confidante to his uncle. On April 1, 527, Justin made his nephew his associate emperor. By this time, Justin had become virtually senile, so that Justinian was acting as the key decision-maker for the Roman empire. Justin died on August 1, 527 and Justinian officially became the sole emperor.
