I bought one of the first of these in 1995 when Triumph came back to the US. Sold my 1967 BSA to get it. The beezer just couldn't keep up with my Pop's 1200 sportster. You're right the old man couldn't keep up with me on the Triumph. 1995 was a 5 speed in 96 they added a gear. in the first year I put almost 20k on it riding to the keys, the mountains all over Florida, work and school. Triumph performed a recall based on my TBird because I had the highest mileage in the US on one. I lived on a dirt road and pulled in sand where the plastic threads split on the air box where the fake covers screwed in. Other than that not one problem with the bike until I sold it in 1999 with 68k miles on it. It handled good, and came off the line pretty quick but really came alive in the mid range. It held its own around town and on the highway and took on Deal's Gap back when nobody was watching. The only down side was no shortage of yahoos telling me "I used to have one of those" but I was used to it after the BSA already. Great bike! Enjoy.

The Norton 961 made now is 78bhp and beautiful with so many improvements made by TVS. At nearly 20000 bucks new it's not cheap but the frame is a tig welded work of art and the handling is fab. I rode a 750 fastback years ago and that was steady as a rock on a bend at over 80mph on Avon roadrunner tyres but in the dry. What a beautiful sound out of those original upswept pipes. Sounded even better than my BSA A10 which is my favourite bike I've ever had. That handled well too, magneto ignition but Joe Lucas prince of darkness only made the dynamo and magneto well after all he was the prince of darkness and the roller in the headlamp switch made dodgy contact and would go off then I'd hit a bump and it would go on again. Can't beat the simple pre unit design and you could start it with no battery straight off the K2f magneto. Absolutely brilliant bike built like a tank and the frame was twin duplex cradle, steady as a rock on bends unlike the triumph single downtube frames that flexed.

Hey @shadetree, bikes are all about pleasure and emotions. I know exactly the feeling you had riding that Triumph. Le'me tell you a short story: My father used to have a Honda CB500F when I was a kid back in the late 70ies. The neighborhood where we lived was very quiet back then on sundays, so he used to put me sat astride the gas tank of his brown steed (no helmets of course it was the 70ies as I wrote), I'd hold his arms (I was 5yrs old and could not reach the passenger pegs) and then he used to ride very slowly (first or second gear) around the block 2 or three times. It' was 40 years ago but I can still recall the emotion I had every time it happen. The sound of those 4 exhausts purring like a big cat. The gentle wind and having some of the best moments together with my beloved father. Of course I also became a biker myself and one day, some years ago, I told this story to a friend of mine who happens to have an old but pristine CB500. So he generously told me: Get my bike, go for a ride. I did it and once again I was 5 yrs old. Once again my father was with me (he is still alive but no longer ride). Best regards from Brazil.

I currently ride a Triumph Sprint GT triple,so love the characteristics of the triple. We had a new next door neighbour move in and she owns the 96 Thunderbird, she has not ridden it for a long time and offered the keys to me to ride it as much as I want(within reason).I was pleasantly surprised expecting a lethargic acceleration and ill behaved bike, but it is a great motor for squirting around the town with a great exhaust note. This still has the peashooter pipes but they were de restricted giving it a great crackle under de acceleration. Looks the goods and handles well for a cruiser. God gave me a great neighbour.

I am seriously considering getting one of these as I am looking for another bike and have looked at them before, being a 59 year old who has been into bikes for about 40 years. I have had a Speedmaster (had the same one twice as I bought it back!) and long for another Triumph. I remember the 900 coming out. I had little money and was riding a 1981 Z650, which I loved. Then in about 2013 a friend in my bike club went to look at one and I went with him. I was keen for him to get it, so that I could have a go but he decided against it because it had a sad history. The previous owner had used it to ride to a place where he took his own life. Was a selling point for me, coming from a gothic horror background, but he was put off. Spent the last 10 years or so on Shadow 600s and 1100s. Sold the last one and now looking for another bike. Your clip is pointing me towards Triumph!

I did buy one though a few years ago as a Sunday bike and I have to say I agree with you about the performance except you didn't mention the woeful spongy brakes... I had to replace the pathetic two piston sliding calliper up front with a four piston unit plus bigger master cylinder and now it has great braking power and a lovely feel. For non-collectors If you cant and don't ride it give it to someone who can and spread the joy. I gave a Honda Shadow 750 to a friend and we have been riding buddies for years (he even took it to Sturgis). First Movie motorcycle Purple Rain, 400cc Hondamatic. Then I was riding dirt bikes. Chasing cattle on the grandfather farm and watching the uncle do motocross; so bikes were about thrashing with Metallica and Maiden. Then the romance of girls on the back of the bike going off to quite places with Darling Nikki.... at 14 and all hormones....
