The Tonebenders, all versions, 2 or 3 transistor, are excellent fuzzes. They don’t clean up quite like a Fuzz Face, but when the Fuzz Face was invented neither overdrive pedals or amps intended to produce overdriven sounds existed and a Fuzz Face offered useful overdrive tones from a clean(ish) amp as well as full-on Fuzz.

Something I found that works really, really well with fuzzes is a “bass cut knob” on the guitar. I have a Reverend Sensei 290 with the bass contour knob and a if you turn down the bass a tiny bit it cleans up the fuzz some and makes it much more dynamic with the guitar volume knob. If you want that farty sounding bottom end you just crank the knob back up.

I got a Earthquaker Devices hoof reaper and it’s pretty versatile and I got the Sunn O)))) one which is even harder to figure out but no one ever told me to cut the bass before when using a fuzz so I really appreciate your comment and I’ll be trying it today for sure and experimenting.

I’ve got a double agent and love the bass contour with so many pedals. It’s crazy how much it cleans up the fuzz on my sunface when I just dial it back a little. Gentlemen! Good to see you back in the room - what better way to celebrate the return of TPS as we (almost) know it than by chasing the Rabbit down the Fuzz hole. Oo-er... RE 5:45 Dan playing loud again: Back at the workshop for the first time myself this week. 2 acoustic guitar comissions on the bench but sadly post Covid no comissionees. To cheer myself up I took my lockdown project - a handwired 4Watt Vibro-Vox (basically a VibroChamp with an EL84 output tube) combo - to work today and put it through it's paces. P90's, a Rangemaster clone and a Single Ended Valve amp, cranked. Cheered me right up! Josh Scott is correct - Loud is More Good...

Back in the '70s there was a band that was 2/3s of Blue Cheer. Guitar and drums, no bass player. No need. I saw them open for Steppenwolf in an arena and a year later they played at the annual festival in Diamond Head Crater. Same rig both shows, 16 Sunn Orions (which was a 200W powered bottom) except that at the Crater Festival they mic'd it into this huge PA. The guy had a pile of probably 10 Fuzz Faces chained together. I was close enough to the stage to see him pull the volume slider on the Orion head/preamp up about half way and this huge hum comes out. He swears and slams the slider down looking at all the boxes on the floor, and starts changing cords. Then he pulls the slider back up about halfway, no huge hum, so he dimes it. I turned and tried to get back from the stage, I think the first chord blew me the rest of the way to the far crater wall. 10 Fuzz Faces in series into 3200W mic'd into a 20,000W PA with 50 feet of horn cabinets piled on each side. Headroom?

I understand, and have been exactly where you stand on fuzz. I think that I had unrealistic expectations for fuzz as an effect that could be used more pervasively like an overdrive pedal. Still looking for a new tone bender after I sold my big box soul bender. Weird thing about that pedal- the cleanup was great. Anyway- the JHS doesn’t quite have the vocal midrange that I associate with benders. However, it reminds me of the mk one you guys played at Macaris in London in the sense that it sounds very big and broad with lots of low end. My old soul bender had a pretty radical low end shelf cut thing going on- which I suppose contributed to the vocal midrange sound- and maybe that’s why this jhs one sounds so different to me. Fascinating!

Sorry for so late. Been a busy weekend. That JHS mode on the Crimson is sooo cool. It has a spitty attack and followed by a creamy fuzz. It was very vanilla in regular mode, that JHS mode is beastly. The Smiley is super cool as well. I normally don’t like Big Muff fuzzes, just don’t do it for me, but it’s time to get one. I’m just floored by the Crimson. And it was the one I was expecting to like the least. So good.

That turned down octave everywhere moment on the Supreme will hopefully be enough of a push to finally get the lads to the point of satiating my YEARS long plee. Do an OCTAVE FUZZ episode! Welcome back to the loud.

Loud! Serious research is needed to compare and contrast the efficacy of loud guitars vs hydroxychloroquine when dealing with current virus! I try and take a healthy dose of loud guitar when ever possible. Do you still have that California Tweed? Thought it was a great amp in it’s price point - seems it made a great to mid volume range of amps.

Great show, good to see you back in the pedal shed. Sensible precautions. I would be interested to hear opinions on the Baldwin Burns buzzaround. Integral to Robert Fripp's cello-like fuzz tone and arguably distinct from any of the 4 'pillars'.

Should’ve used acrylic... that plexiglass sounds terrible. (Since this is the Internet, no, I’m not serious)

Artisanal acrylic enhances tone across the frequency spectrum. Plexiglass... please (eyeroll)

Well ackshually those are the same. Plexiglass is a brandname for acrylic, or to be exact, Polymethylmethacrylate, by Evonik. Yes I am great fun at parties.

You each need your own "Pedal Strick" to push buttons and turn knobs. Actually, thinking it is a good idea for me too - back issues sometimes.

That superfuzz sounds gnarley, like The Stooges or Mudhoney style :)

Mick, I just bought a pre wired pickguard for my jazzmaster with 500K pots. It took the ice pick edge off the bridge pickup and it still has that classic jazzmaster sound. I highly recommend the pre wired option!

Can´t imagine Mick in angry mode. The same way that I didn't expect to hear the word "Taylor" been spoken in conjunction with the word "Swift" from his mouth. This episode has been a revelation!

He has mentioned her before. He's a fan of her songwriting skills. Cheers
