The Fovea, is a small depression in the retina, located at the center of the macula.
This small section makes up less than 1% of the retinal size, but comprises over 50% of the visual cortex in the brain.
The fovea provides the highest visual acuity for central field of vision, which is due to the distribution of cones wtihin it. The fovea only contains cones, and these color cones allow the eye to create sharp, clear images.
Damage to the macula, can result in a loss of central vision. This destruction can result in a disease known as macular degeneration.
Although there isn't any known cure for this disease, there are some treatments that may delay its progression.
