I am betting the M1 will suck less power than an intel processor. If you are considering solar and off grid then this might be a consideration. I just like to NOT waste power on anything at home if I can turn it off or down. I am the guy checking the power usage on the Electrical Company website every day.
@ElevatedSystems
3 жыл бұрын
@@moviestudioland Actually you can lock the Intel CPU to a 15W TDP while the M1 has no user configuration and will operate up to 40 watts at load. The M1 has better performance par watt but the 1165G7 can use a lot less power thanks to user set power levels.
@harryhall4001
3 жыл бұрын
@@ElevatedSystems This really isn't true at all The M1 does not and cannot use 40W even at max load. The entire M1 mini only draws 39W under max load and that includes the inefficiencies in it's power supply, the RAM, and other system components. The maximum TDP of the M1 is thought to be about 15W under maximum CPU load, maybe a little more if a GPU load is applied as well. This is equal to the Intel with power tuning. When you factor in that the M1 completes tasks faster and uses less power at idle it will overall use significantly less power than the Intel system. You also have to factor in that the Framework laptop has to spend more energy than an M1 laptop on cooling, RAM, and IO. This is especially true given most systems spend the majority of there time at idle. The MacBook Air doesn't have to spend any power on cooling since it doesn't even have a fan, which also effectively lowers it's TDP for prolonged workloads. Which isn't to say that the Framework laptop isn't something you should support. It is a very good idea in and of itself. What it needs (and really all laptop PCs need) is better, more efficient processors. Ideally something as efficient and powerful as an M1 - or better. Luckily many companies are looking into making ARM processors for PCs and you can already buy Windows laptops with ARM Snapdragons and Linux laptops with cheaper ARM SoCs. You can also further restrict the Intel CPU but it would effect performance and maybe even efficiency. Some CPUs actually use less power running short workloads at higher clockspeeds and then returning to idle more quickly than doing it slower and spending less time in idle.
@TheDeathmail

Just one correction. Even if it fails, the laptop is still more upgradeable and repairable than an Apple product and most laptop computers you can buy. The vast majority of it's parts are stuff you can buy from intel and other manufacturers and we know that some 3rd party ports will be made. At least temporarily. So even if it fails, we can still upgrade and repair our PC much more than the other guys.
@kovspbru
3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. You can swap not only ram and ssd, but also whole motherboard to i7 with better boosts and more cashe. So - even CPU is upgradeable for most buyers (those with i5), even if Framework fails to deliver more options. And yes, other notebooks allow to swap motherboards, but these manipulations are way more complicated and can cause troubles.
@moviestudioland
3 жыл бұрын
Modular does not matter unless you CAN replace the motherboard or CPU board with upgraded CPU.
3 жыл бұрын
@@moviestudioland Still easier to repair though. And you can upgrade the RAM and SSD. If you didn't buy the highest spec model you could upgrade to the current top of the line motherboard, though that's not likely to be a cost effective upgrade. For me, the fact that the keyboard is easy to replace is a big plus. It's not, for example, like the Inspiron 13 7368 I have, where you have to disassemble just about EVERYTHING to get to the keyboard so you can replace it. (The battery, heat pipe and fan, motherboard, I/O daughtercard, and power connector have to come out, and you have to remove the display.) In contrast, you can get to the keyboard on the Framework by just removing the top deck. (Lots of screws, but that's typical in a thin and light where the keyboard itself doesn't have a rigid baseplate and instead depends on the keyboard deck of the case for stiffness.) I'm notorious for wearing the things out; I've had to replace the keyboard in just about every laptop I have ever used as a daily driver.

@@moviestudioland you say that as if your hating on the product, but the issue is that you literally cannot source socketable mobile Cpus anymore. Even if you could, it would make the device thicker, which would kill the entire point of this product and all of its mass market appeal. Ideally, in 5 years they can have a "framework pro" which can be a bit thicker and have a socketable CPU, but having that as your one single product would kill them in an instant.

We won't really know that it will be truly upgradable until it's been out a while. So many technologies we take for granted today didn't exist 3-4 years ago. Mainstream portable laptops don't really benefit from marginal upgrades, so we have to see if you can actually keep the majority of this laptop intact in 4-5 years when you're ready for a serious performance boost. That said, repairability is a great thing to have in a laptop, and for DIY types and for businesses with IT departments, I think this could be wonderful. In the class of mainstream laptops, though, I don't really see why I would ever want this computer when Apple laptops are similarly priced, have good service options, tend to perform better, and can be sold at a very reasonable loss in 3 years. However, when Framework makes a gaming laptop, that's where things like upgradability will really start to matter, and that's where I'll be interested.

From the Framework forums, it feels like there are a decent number of Thinkpad users hoping to break free from Lenovo, but with increasing awareness of how we are destroying the planet, there may be more people who want something like this thinking that it's better for the environment. Whether it actually is better for the environment is up for debate, but I certainly don't like the idea that if something goes wrong with for example a macbook, you're often encouraged to basically junk the whole thing and get a new one, because even if it can be repaired, the cost of the repair is usually very high (or you've paid $300 for Applecare...). What Apple does with broken laptops I don't know, but I assume they are recycled somehow.

@@andyp123456 Apple can do better as far as repairability, but so can a lot of tech companies. People may point to the likes of System76, Slimbook, Tuxedo Computers, etc as examples of smaller hardware companies finding a sustainable market. I think you kinda miss a bit when discussing the target market. This computer is perfectly acceptable in the EU market for example. Apple products are not as liked here in the EU as they are in the US, mainly because of how hard it is to get Apple to actually fix their own products when they broke. Also, as Louis Rosman referred, the Framework laptop is easily reparable by any third-party reparable service. This for me is a big win, specially to those clients who are tired of paying big bugs just because Apple and other computer sellers are unwilling to fix their own products, forcing their clients to buy new ones.

If I may, there's a part that is inaccurate, contradictory with the rest, and maybe misleading: "If Framework becomes another casualty, I'm left with a laptop that's just as serviceable or upgradeable as an Apple product." Even if the company disappeared and never built new modules or specific components, you'd still be left with a much more modular and easy to open laptop, with no damn glue, with good documentation, user-friendly guides and lots of off-the-shelf upgradeable or swappable components. So, even in that case, it'd still be in a totally different league compared to an Apple product.

Intel definitely wins in single core performance, but doesn't ryzen beat them in efficiency? From what i understand, at comparable performance amd's mobile CPUs consume less and produce less heat than intel ones, right? This could definitely help with battery life, and considering thin and lights are made too always be on the go, i think there's always a market for higher battery life, even if it comes at marginally lower performance (which is trivial to most consumers). I think it'd be great to have the option to choose between ryzen and intel, so the buyer can decide based on their needs.

Ryzen wins in performance per watt but that is mostly multicore performance. Both operate at 15 and 28 watt PL1 and PL2 limits so overall battery performance is about the same depending on your workflow. Ryzen systems do use less power overall however as there is less power demand by the IO.

Watching this video now, I can see Framework adding prebuilt zen4/4d configurations when those come out since they'll have rdna2 built-in graphics, and by then AMD will be supporting TB4 standards, hopefully

I can see this laptop as an awesome company computer that employers can provide its workers - modular, upgradable, with a bunch of different options for different types of use within the company. I'm thinking in sectors like finance, non-profits, even higher education. The company can have a library of different Framework laptop parts, especially battery cause usually those are the first to go. If something goes wrong with the computer, it's easy to swap the parts needed. No need to send the laptop in a box to a provider for repairs if it can be done in the office. For example, I work in a nonprofit that uses older Lenovo laptops - it's common for me and my co-workers to request a replacement laptop from IT when ours malfunction. The company IT guy then takes the laptop, sends it back to our laptop provider, then wait to get a replacement laptop...takes too much time. Framework will serve nicely to fix this issue, and if they do well in the future, it is more sustainable. Great video, earned yourself a sub from me :)

I am a student myself, and currently have a 4 year old hp craptop. If for some reason my laptop would die on me I would seriously consider a framework. Yes the entry price is a bit more I’m willing to ideally pay, but the repairability would help offseting that in the long run, especially for students very tight on money.

@@onelyone6976 Yes, I wonder if they could get really competitive, because you just have to swap out the mainboard to get newer performance, which is not possible with any other laptop. And if a better screen comes out, you can pop that in too. If battery technology improves, you can get a better battery. The point is, if done right, you might not need a completely new laptop which I think most people factor in if they compare prices, since normally you need to buy new devices every few years. And that way the price becomes something completely different to consider. I also believe that in the future, integrated iGPUs on the processor chips will become insanely good. I was already astonished how many of my games a Ryzen chip could drive suprisingly well. For the full-demanding games I'll always have my tower computer, laptops just can't top that, or they get hot and loud, which I don't like. So on a laptop I would play such games that I tested: Minecraft, Subnautica, Portal, Factorio etc. And those ran very, very well. I don't think it stops here. I think we will be able to drive more and more stuff on that, and if you can get all that with a switch of your mainboard cheaper than buying a new laptop all the time to keep up with the advances of technology, what could you ask more? They literally made everything replacable, that you can think of. That is a completely new way of seeing a product, that we still have to get used to. In our minds we always think that we need a new device to get a better display and anything really. With Framework that's not true anymore. I really hope that they keep up with providing mainboard updates, because I think that is one of the most compelling reasons I can think of.

I bought one and I'm even going the extra mile as I don't live in the US or Canada... So I'm just shipping it through a company just to support Framework so they can continue developing and improving their product. I still am pretty much afraid it will fail and I'll end up with a somehow upgradable laptop... But... Yeah we'll see where this goes :)

I think it would be cool if they could make a slightly bigger case - and it became the equivalent to an ATX case - ie it's been around for 26 years. You can build in it and keep upgrading it forever.

I would think they will keep to this design for long time, maybe expand with more designs but probably still have vary similar design internal (so it is easier to have replacement parts)
@ColeHajek

I don’t see why they would need to change much regarding the shape of the internal components. I’m more worried about future chips requiring a more intense cooling system that doesn’t quite fit the dimensions of the device. However as long as they keep the mounting similar they could probably just sell a larger chassis that would be capable of supporting more or larger components. In any case there’s a lot of possibility and I’m really looking forward to it (and can’t wait for my order to ship this month regardless!)

I think another market they will be a big hit with are people with environmental concerns! E-waste is a huge environmental problem and the upgradeability and repairability are a huge selling point in this context!

I want. They do need to make a model built for enthusiasts though. Particularly tech geeks who are also creatives. I still wouldn't mind if they make a motherboard with soldered on discrete gpus even if it would mean these gpus are on the lower end for their current models. Also a touch digitizer would perfect this laptop. Maybe even custom drivers to give users the ultimate hackintosh? But that would be stepping into legal territory.

It's not just for PC enthusiast, this laptop can also work very well in the business/enterprise market, companies users always treat enterprise computers like sh1t (that's why thinkpad have the fame of being a tough PC) being able to replace pieces easily is a plus for this market.

As soon as they ship to Europe i am IN. As all the parts will still be sellable as replacement parts for broken devices not even upgrading seems too much of an issue.

I’d love a second chassis option for dedicated graphics, and the ability to start with an ultra book and then swap the motherboard into that bigger case if your needs change. Or conversely, to buy a fully kitted out portable system with a 3060 and a 14” screen that I could then swap into a 13” ultra book by removing the daughter board and putting into a lighter chassis for travel. Hell, even a mini pc box that we could use to turn any older framework motherboard into a home theatre pc or retro gaming rig.
@braddirt

I'd settle for a machine with upgradeable dedicated graphics but I agree I want something where I can put a 3060 class gpu in it.

Sadly laptop GPUs are surface mounted also, that means you can't just drop one in, if it's part of the motherboard then you wouldn't be able to move to another chasis without moving the whole specs, if it uses a daughter board you would need a way bigger chasis to accommodate another board and a second cooling system you can separate from the main one.
@braddirt

@@MrJleonp all modern gpus are surface mounted. I am taking about sticking one on a replaceable daughter board... You know... Just have a graphics card manufacturer make one.

@@braddirt Yeah, I get it, sounds bulky having in mind it's a separate board and a separate cooling for the GPU, and probably would need a bigger battery, I imagine it the size of a laptop DVD drive or a 2.5 inch SSD but a bit taller, and probably very loud having a separate fan.
@MrJleonp

@@braddirt well, on a second thought, it sounds like an eGPU but inside haha, thunderbolt 4 should be able to handle it, like an internal expansion port, an using thunderbolt will allow to use it on other laptops or repurpose it later when you upgrade to a better one

12:13 really? Faster by how much? 5%? I would trade that intel advantage for the AMDs cooler 15w mobile apu that runs just as fast with that 28w tiger lake and that trade may get me 1 more hour in battery.
@ElevatedSystems
3 жыл бұрын
It's about 25% faster for Adobe Premiere and Adobe PDF Export, and roughly 21% faster in the PCMark 10 Applications Suite which covers basically all the applications I use day to day. Also the Tiger Lake PL1 TDP is 15W, PL2 is 28W, same as Ryzen. I also don't want to trade the Thunderbolt support as it will allows me to connect my eGPU and use the laptop as as a competent backup editing system.
