My (now, sadly ex) girlfriend always said I seemed to long for my childhood, which perhaps explains why tears come for me. Have you heard the wonderful solo guitar version by Marvin B. Naylor? There are two versions on KZitem, one of him busking, and one at home - check that one out. It's lovely.

48 years old now. My brother and I used to watch this during school holidays when BBC ran it in the early 70s. Easter holidays if I remember rightly! The BBC who actually have a disgraceful reputation for mishandling tapes and archiving. They lost pretty much every Steptoe and Son episode from the 1960s by re-using it - YES, actually taping over it. The series was thought lost at the end of the 70s along with entire original soundtrack. Fortunately the FRENCH came to the rescue

As i near 60, living alone, I find myself thinking more of those school days, holidays that were hot summers!, snow in winter etc, and growing up, secondary school, the girls! Oh the girls! happy, secure days, then we grow up, married twice & divorced, shat on twice! I don't find much to rave about these days,..ho hum.

This, and other tv theme music (Dr Who, The Saint, The Avengers) really made my ears prick up as a seven or eight year old child, watching b/w tv in the sixties, and sparked my love of music. The French production was arguably the classiest and most watchable adaptation ever made for tv, or for that matter cinema. I say that as someone who has read a lot of classic literature, but still thinks the Defoe novel is one of the most boring and overrated novels ever written.

Yes. Partly it was because videotape was expensive, but I've also heard that in the BBC there was an institutional dislike of keeping archive material, because the unions were afraid that repeats would be used to do creative professionals out of a job. To be fair also, back then most people seemed to dislike repeats. The idea of watching your favourite show multiple times only seemed to catch on in the 1990s with DVDs and channels like UK Gold.

It's strange how it uses the secondary theme all the way through, but never gets to the original theme as used under the programme's titles!
@bazcuda

I was about to say the same thing. Especially as the main theme is so much better and, for me, iconic. This was the "incidental" music when he was off building his solution to whatever the current problem was that needed to be overcome. :D

@@bazcuda If you want to hear a lovely version of the main theme, look for 'Marvin B Naylor Robinson Crusoe Theme' - he's a busker who plays fingerstyle guitar (he usually frequents Winchester), and he's got four version here on KZitem. The first time I heard him play it I had to sit down and listen, as I was entranced and moved by it in equal measure.
