If you feel you deserve a treat and absolutely have to have one, you need to redefine your idea of treats. Not all treats cost money. You could get in touch with an old friend you haven’t talked to in a long time. You could research dream vacations for when you DO have money-- anticipation is a lot of the fun. You could watch KZitem videos to learn how to do the perfect cat eye, or how to crochet, or watch Free University course videos. If you have seeds or bulbs, you can’t plant those, if not, just planning a garden is fun. Imagination not money.

Amazon. That is the flood in my boat. I pay off the card I use just for Amazon every month. I never carry a balance. BUT…now that Christmas shopping is done, I am refocusing for 23. Choices are changing. The last year I spent investing in food. We are stocked. Our needs are minimal. Christmas for the family children is our splurge. We know they are small for such a short time. We live within our means but we can do so much better. So I am putting Amazon on notice! 🤣 plugging that hole in my boat. Shopping will be strategic in 23! DONT DO IT! ❤️

I went into Walmart yesterday because a neighbor told me the plastic outdoor chairs that are $30 this year were on clearance for $5. I needed some chairs so went to get a couple. I just went into garden center purchased just the chairs and left. I noticed most of the Walmart employees go to restaurant next door for breaks. I was thinking 🤔 wow so at least 1 hour per day closer to 2 hours daily to pay for lunch. It made me realize the true cost of eating out. How many hours does it take to earn that money? If make $15/hour then at least $5 for taxes and insurance removed from your check b4 you ever receive it. Meal costs $13-$15 and at least $20 for pizza. So may work 2 hours to pay for lunch. Is it worth it? Only the worker can decide.

As soon as I make a purchase, I deduct it from my checking account. In the space where the check # would go, I put a letter for whichever charge card I'm using (I use two for very specific reasons). That way I have already "paid" the money . I keep a running total, and when the bill is due, I pay it with the money I have already earmarked for it. I also spend money from specific budget categories somewhat like your's (but I have several sinking funds that i don't dip into). My friend told me that that's too confusing, but it's easy when you get used to it, and nothing gets overlooked. I refuse to pay interest too! 😁

I'm learning that if I focus on my sleep and fluids. If I do that I do better on everything else, weight management, and my moods. Newest frugal don't is to shop only with a list and anything purchased beyond the list (impulse buy) I either have to transfer an equal amount into a savings account or not buy and put on the next shopping list. Also trying to shop from my freezer and pantry, why if it's so full and I still need to buy so much at the store. Because I don't meal plan, that's why! Work in progress. Love your videos and practical advice.

The one thing frugal people don't do is pay someone else for convience and services when they can avoid it. There was a time around here before the housing bubble when everyday smoes were paying others to mow the lawn, treat the lawn, prune the shrubbery, wash the car, vacuum the car, clean the house for so many hours a week, deep clean the house, prep meals, and so on and so on. There are times in one's life when you might have to pay someone to do these or some of these tasks; even when you're able bodied. But not so you can say: "Oh, I hire someone to do that." With respect to frugality, it extends beyond household chores and maintenance into most aspects of life. Each person has thier own skill set, personal financial and time/ labor budget, and preferences. What is an acceptable frugal activity to one person may not be to another. Yet, frugal people tend to do more of thier own tasks and not want to pay others for what they are able and willing to do themselves.

Story from today: I brought my car in for some service - much of it covered under warranty. Thing is, I expected the maintenance to be no cost as that has been my history with the dealer where I got the car. Turns out -- that coverage has ended. Picking up my car it was close to $300 rather than $65 -- whaaaa?! While standing there - a bit in shock, I calmly handed over my debit card (paying cash). Without your guidance these past few months I wouldn't have known my full checking balance and MY BUDGET and would have put it on credit while I re-grouped. Instead, I paid cash, went home, adjusted my budget and boom! No new debt. Glory be!! I love your frank and real advice and encouragement. Thank you!! 🙏

Once I got rid of it and paid cash for a used car I could afford I now have an extra $400+ a month. I feel so rich all of a sudden. It’s often those big expenses that are killing us. Oooh! You have a good inventory of pantry and frozen foods? That is great. Can you start pulling from there for one meal a week to start committing to using it up and removing one meal from your current purchase for a little bit? We tamped down into a stringent budget by the end of May (2022) when gas prices rose by about $1.50/ gal in 4, not quite 5 weeks, and we still had mandatory trips out of our area. We've done a number of purchasing and other behavior changes. Each month, we look for additional "opportunties" to reduce expenditures and currently, we're working on electricity usage creap while realizing we are up for a 17% rate increase and that some of that creap was actually related to fans for heat yet we were able to not need a/c as a result.

Kate, thank you so much. I needed this and so many of the things that you have touched on were right on the nail's head. You'll never know what a WONDERFUL BLESSING you have been to my finances and mental well being or how much I look forward to your u-tube. With lots of gratitude and fondly, a Michigan fan. 💐🤗💐

Totally agree with comment about getting up on time! When I retired I thought I could be lazy and sleep late since I don't have anyone else to care for. But after doing that a few times I realized on the mornings that I didn't adhere to my regular routine I would forget to take my morning medicine. That could be a serious consequence for a few extra zzzz's. Lol

I agree waking up late is expensive. I wake up at 6:00 and leave around 7:45. If I stay in bed every bodies day would be negatively effected. So I never hit snooze but I have forgotten to set my alarm and those days are crazy bought lunches and coffees. So stay organized and intentional always saves money. Thanks Kate.
