I did have a great experience in Siem Reap. This video is the actual point in which I made my mind up to come back to stay for a while longer. Sometimes I ramble when I record videos and it's a cathartic process for me to process my feelings and thoughts. I don't always keep the recordings, but this one I wanted to because it felt so powerful to me when it happened.

I'm 50 and plan very soon to do the same thing that you are doing. At some point during my last few years, I too began to realize that I was not happy and had two immediate family members pass away. I had always been happy before. I believe it is in those times that you must make a big change in your life, and not let that bad feeling fester. So glad that you took a chance and are visiting southeast Asia. Siem Reap does look like a proper place to spend some time. Just having the freedom from constant visa runs or renewals is great.

Your story is very much like mine but just add 5 years. Haha. I am truly happy that I took this step and journey. I have been wanting to for years, but I always had an excuse for not going. The best decision I have ever made was booking that 1 way flight to bangkok and leaving. I have no regrets.

I came to SE Asia to travel and enjoy the different cultures compared to back home and something about Cambodia just felt right to me. I can't wait to get back. I hope that you get over here and feel the same way about a place. There are times I miss Canada, but I just have to look at the weather reports and it all just fades away. Haha . For sure, I'm thinking of heading over June or July-ish, I was going to set up in Thailand, but now that 35% tax they introduced this year means expats have to prove any money brought in is tax paid in home country. So, maybe 6 months there, and a slow roll 3 months Cambodia, 3 months Vietnam etc. I won't know till I get there. Still have to sell everything here, bloody nightmare. Canada...I do not recognize it anymore, cost of living, and everything else we know going on here, and the Cold. Lol. Anyway, great videos'. Cheers, Dave

You seem to be in the same spot I was last year. I almost sold everything off, but didn't. I still have a bunch back in Canada but I'm very lucky that I have a friend taking care of it while I'm here. I came over with the intention of just bouncing around and get the feel for where I want to stay. The rules in Thailand are very fluid and seem to change almost daily. I do love it here, but I think I would rather visit for a while instead of staying long term. Who knows where I will end up, but I do know that I prefer things here over back in Canada. I've only been gone a few months and staying away from the majority of the media and just checking in a few times, has been great for my state of mind. I do not miss $7 loaves of bread at all. I hope things change back home, but I have a feeling that it will only get worse before it gets better.

Looks like a chill place, but I bet you can also find the same vibe in Thailand too if you escape the busy Cities and tourist traps. A lot of older folks who want to get away from Cities seem to gravitate to Hua Hin. Never been there, but seen a lot of videos and looks quite nice, but a lot of expats. I'm 100% sure a move to SE Asia would be the right move for me too, and I sincerely hope I can make it happen soon. I've seen a few videos from older western guys saying that moving over there literally saved their lives. They were depressed and miserable as hell in the west to the point of giving up on life, yet they gained a new found spark and happiness and a stress free life in SEA. It seems like moving there really can change your life in so many good ways.

Traveling outside of Bangkok is definitely more chill and I'm sure that I could be more comfortable in a location like hua hin. The biggest draw for me and Cambodia is the easy to get visas. Not having to do a run each month to get a new one and the worry around that would be nice. Also there are job prospects for me in Cambodia. I can get some part time work and allow myself to not stress about my expenses. Add to all that the people and the food and I am seriously considering it. As to your other point. The trip here has changed my life. Back in Canada I was depressed and dealing with a lot of mental issues. This trip was a hope for me to completely reset my life and purge a bunch of my bad habits and mental hurdles that were keeping me stuck in Canada. I'm way happier and healthier here. Both mentally and physically. I do not have a complaint at all.

@@FrugalWanderer Cool. Everyone has their comfortable place, and if it's Cambodia for you then so be it. Of course the VIsa issue is also a big question. Maybe you jumped the gun by signing up for your BKK apartment. I also have a fair few personal issues here in Europe too, the biggest of which is that I'm so so so miserable with life and the stupid high cost to keep doing it. It feels like insanity to be paying a fortune to remain miserable as hell. Of course that creates a lot of depression too, feeling like my life is being utterly wasted in a place I hate living and only gets progressively worse. I feel like I'm going half bonkers over here, to the point of wanting to buy a one-way ticket out of here. I'd happily leave tonight with two suitcases if I could. This way of living is not a life. Sorry for the rant, but that's how it is.
@FrugalWanderer

@@cryptotrader2779 Your rant is appreciated.I felt the same when I was back in Canada.I was crawling out of my skin just wanting to leave and find some sanity again. All I wanted was a simpler life, less drama and less stress. I have found that here. As for my place here in Bangkok, my landlord understood from the start that I was going to possibly only be around for a few months. So if I do leave for Cambodia, it shouldn't be an issue.

@@FrugalWanderer Your feelings in Canada are identical to mine. When you said "I was crawling out of my skin just wanting to leave and find some sanity again", that's me for the last 4-5 years or more. I can't stand another day of this, I just want out of here ASAP to somewhere way less stressful. Every day feels like a struggle of willpower to get out of bed in the morning. My favourite time of every day is going to bed so I can forget the crap for 8 hours. That's not a life.

🤔 If I thought I could find - "simple joys" - from sweating to death over there - I'd be there in a heartbeat !!! --- On video - or - 'on paper' - Siem Reap is amazing. I love what all it has to offer and what it appears to be and the people are simply just incredible. -- English is my thing - not Spanish or something else ! -- You see - I want to be ""comfortable"" in my old decrepit age & relax - not need 6 or 8 showers/day to interrupt my doing nothing ! I'm 74 AND less energetic than ''you'' and/or many others. Good food is a high priority as well. Siem Reap serves it up too - even some really good cheap street food I hear ?!? Don't drink or smoke but I might enjoy a cold 50 cent beer now and then when its hot. - - - Yes sir -- you found yours -- it sounds like to me -- and you got me wanting mine ! > I am inspired by your having found yours - gives me hope !!! --- My frugal "wanderings" have me headed to about as comfortable a place as I could find & afford in over a years searching almost daily. Tagaytay has an average yearly temp. of 72 degrees. Beautiful stunning scenery super friendly English speaking locals terrific international food locally grown fresh organic fruits and veggies all year with strawberries bananas pineapples & coffee grown as well. (?) There are mountains waterfalls sandy beaches all nearby. Even Metro Manila Airport is but an hour away in light traffic. It is a great retirement destination. The City boasts a 24/7 Casino Sky Ranch Amusement Park a Picnic Grove - 4 - 24/7 McDonalds even - yet only maintains 84,000 full time residents. > Google even says it's a perfect destination --&-- '''a couple can retire comfortably on $1000/mo.''' !!! --- Enough said. --- I may visit SR in Dec. or Jan. or Feb. just for a taste - ''in comfort'' - naturally. 😀 Thanks young man -&- all the best !

I have many friends from the Philippines and all of them love the parts of their country that they are from. Tagaytay sounds wonderful. I truly hope that you are able to find your way there and be happy. I'm not sure where I will end up. Growing up, I moved all the time and because of that I have a wanderlust that makes me get ants in my pants and I usually move on within a year or less. There have been a few times in my life that I stayed in a place for longer, but not many. Who knows I may end up in Tagaytay one day myself when I want a more temperate place to settle for a while. I thought I would not be a fan of the heat, but I've adjusted to it very well and I have been enjoying multiple showers a day. Haha. Thank you so much for sharing your take and for checking out my adventures. I especially appreciate you helping me out by placing another pin into the places I need to visit.

Definitely noticed a huge difference in air quality between bangkok and siem reap. You're probably right on the lack of breeze causing bad air, but the amount of traffic and industry in Bangkok compared to Siem Reap makes it quite a lot worse. Great vlog, just sitting back, enjoying your thoughts and ideas.

I am glad that you noticed the difference in air quality too. For sure there is way more traffic and industry in Bangkok, but the lack of a breeze is what I noticed as soon as I got back here. It is still a fun city and I am enjoying Bangkok, but Siem Reap was different and it resonated with me way more than I ever thought. This video was not scheduled or planned. I had just finished visiting Artisans Angkor and I was just wparring up that video when I started to ramble and process a bunch of information. I find myself doign this all the time, just making a ton of useless content for me to cut, but this time I felt that it deserved to be it's own video, so this was born out of that accident. I appreciate you all stopping by again and for the kind words. Looking forward to our meetup. It will be great to hang out

When I arrived in SE Asia, I flew into Bangkok. I had a friend that was already visiting Bangkok, so I thought it would be a good place to start. Siem Reap has an international airport as well, but I have not used it as of yet. I guess it depends on what your plans are. If you want to visit a bunch of countries, then Bangkok is a great place to use as a hub to start your trip. There are trains and busses you can use from there to get around. Good luck on your trip. It's amazing here and I'm sure you will enjoy yourself.

@FrugalWanderer

I used Agoda to get my hotel when I was there and spent around $8 Canadian a night. It was nothing fancy but it suited my needs perfectly. If you are looking for something more than just a few nights, reach out to a realtor. They can show you places that have short term leases. You can also try Facebook marketplace, but I personally would use a realtor. I was able to view a bunch of places for $200-$250 a month that were quite nice. I guess it depends on what you are looking for and how much you want to spend. Good luck in your quest.
