Thank you for such a detailed and honest account of this epic adventure. I did this same route in ‘96 and just re-lived once again all those memories and feelings thanks to you. We got pinned down at 16’ at the top of the fixed lines for 3 nights with 100mph sustained winds. By the time we got to 17’ we were toast. Summit day was in whiteout and the summit ridge was in a lenticular. We made it but spent a night at 17’ and 14’ Before the long slog back to the strip. I can’t believe you were pushed straight through!! Thank you for letting me re-live the adventure!

John, this is really fabulous. Thank you. I am still stunned at the ending. The only negative vibes came at the end where you commented on the lack of support from the guides. This absolutely shocked me. You were so positive throughout the video, therefore the guides must have really screwed up for you to comment in the manner you did. Thanks again...

Bobby - Fair enough. I didn't have a good experience with the head guide on this climb and wanted to leave that out of this video as much as possible. It was a personality clash which happens on mountains. Probably just as much my fault as anyone's. Contrary to what I said here, I have gone guided following this climb and have had wonderful experiences with every company since.

Beautiful video! Thank you for capturing so much footage - I know it takes way more effort and thought than most are aware. I did this exact route in 1996, but we were pinned down for 3 nights in a snow cave at the top of the fixed lines. 100mph sustained winds made for some real excitement! From that point onward was whiteout so I love watching the details of your footage. My summit photo is pure white. We never saw a thing. Congrats!! And I loved hearing your commentary of being overwhelmed every moment by the splendor - it's spectacular in every way.

came here out of intrest in the mountain. just finished a cruise to alaska where we took a sea plane up the glacier and flew around. weather was good and we were able to get a good glimps of the summit for a good ten minutes before we had to turn around. the pilot told us we were flying right above the base camp area and i remember thinking we were at a pretty high altitude (i have a fear of heights) and still looking up at the summit and it was still so much higher then we were. was an experience ill always remember. cant imagion climbing it, but the video was really well done and just wanted to thank you for sharing it with the world. i really enjoyed watching it.

+Kevin Stone Rainier is, like most mountains, largely about the mindset. Of course you need the technical skills and so, but moving up disappointment cleaver makes you realize it earned the name for a reason. One foot in front of the other and you'll make it! Good luck!

I would agree and argue that you need to practice, not only read, glacier rescue until you know it by heart. At no point did I imply otherwise, hence my caveat that you you need the technical skills. My point was simply that having the technical skills to do it doesn't ensure you will. Mind over matter plays a large role, as it does in every climb or adventure.

Austen - I actually do recommend a guide service, especially if you haven't been to the mountain (or comparable) previously. It's all about the guides as people and how you mesh. Therefore, don't base it on the company so much as on the specific guide. I can, however, say that I've had wonderful experiences with IMG.

I loved this video and I’m glad you shared it. I think you were a little too hard on your guide, though. Even you said he might have had altitude sickness. It’s not fair to lose a tip because of something you can’t control. Even if it wasn’t altitude sickness, the guy sounded like he was dealing with some other life threatening stuff and was triaging his people, like a guide should do. Just my two cents. I’m still thankful you posted and glad you got this experience.

I'm so glad you loved!! I've seen an iteration of this comment throughout the years that this video has been posted, so here is my answer to anyone with the same critique: Without context, your response is fair. However, here's context from my perspective: I deleted many details from this narration with the intent of keeping this video, my memory of the experience, and the viewer experience, a positive one. Personally, I don't appreciate being cursed at for days on end, called expletives as unwanted nicknames, threatened to be deprived of a tent, food, and water during a 16 day climb (conditional upon if I continued to film and photograph). I'm also not a fan of my teammates being screamed at for accidentally dropping items, me being face palmed with a leather glove in well below freezing temps, nor being forced to march for 24 hours because the guide wanted a promised tip from a known-to-be-wealthy client. I don't like being told to 'shut your ****ing mouth and stay in your place' when suggesting that multiple people with clear AMS symptoms should not ascend 3K+ vertical feet from high camp (17k) to summit (20k). The triage you mention wouldn't have been required had those in question not ascended. It wasn't a noble or unexpected triage, it was making up for what I still consider to be mistakes of judgement that had already been called out and subsequently ignored. Especially in hindsight and with more experience under my belt today, I went very easy on the guide in my narration here. To this day, I'm still super glad to have had this experience. I'm massively stoked that everyone on our team summited. Most that season did not. I'm grateful that despite the differences of leadership decisions that I was able to be a part of an otherwise amazing team on a life-changing and successful summit climb as a result of their leadership. It's seriously phenomenal up there and I got to experience one of earth's most beautiful high places, despite not enjoying the style of guide service. My overall stoke is just as real today as in this video. I did my best to be a team player and have a positive attitude despite what I still remember as dramatically harsh treatment. Despite that, I learned a whole lot about mountaineering, survival at altitude, and who I want to be as a mountaineer and person. Perhaps a moot point, but I gave a generous tip to the very same guide on a previous Rainier climb in which he was phenomenally instructive, encouraging, patient, and supportive. Yet, something clearly switched in his demeanor/attitude towards me in the interim between that climb and the start of this Denali experience which was never clearly communicated. I'm still not sure what changed, but no matter the reason, I did not find the treatment to be acceptable, hence the negativity in that section of my narration. Just my twenty cents in return :) Thank you for watching and enjoying everything else!

This makes me miss Alaska and miss climbing. I've been working on getting back into it, but I live in a super flat state now and so there's no improbable climbs within the whole state. I've driven a car higher than the elevation of the highest mountain in Texas.
