In the 1970’s, there was the rise of writers Salim-Javed’s angry young man, a world which was largely unreal, stylish, violent and very popular with the audience. Around the same time, two Bengali filmmakers were quietly narrating gentler stories, which hit closer, to the real lives of the Indian middle class. These two directors were Basu Chatterjee and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. In my conversation with dear friend, and Hunter and Badhai Do Director Harshvardhan Kulkarni, we converse about his life at the Pune Film Institute, his initial struggles to find his voice as a filmmaker, his blockbuster hits made on his own terms and finally, how he has managed to contemporarise BasuDa and HrishiDa through his films
