i can listen on this a thousand times and i will do it again and again. the beauty of this song rendered by the Funk Brotheres and Joan Osborne is ageless.

Standing in the Shadows of Motown is one of my most favourite movies of all time. It is a shame that it took this long to unveil the Funk Brothers. RIP in the memebers that are no longer with them!!...We will keep them in our memories!

Watch the version with almost 2 millions, she KILLS IT there. That's from the Standing in the Shadow of Motown DVD that was a tribute to James Jamerson. That version is masterful and though I LOVE Jimmy Ruffin, I like Joanie's better.

@bealestbluesss Very few times have i thought that covers were better than the original but 'broken hearted' and 'heatwave' by Joan are incredible versions. I have wondered how these performances would rank on modern day talent shows like 'Got Talent'??

Yes, Joan absolutely nails it on that film Standing in the Shadows of Motown. That film totally floored me first time I saw it. If you've never seen it, do yourself a huge favor, find it and watch.

difficile de passer derrière jimmy et elle arrive à fair sienne cette chanson. quelle voix ! it's difficult after jimmy to sing "avec maestria" this song and her cover is absolutly incredible. So i agree, she does this song like she owns. What a great voice.

What DVD did you buy? I've been searching forever for a DVD of Joan and the Funk Brothers at the Montreal Jazz Festival 2004. Had a copy on my PVR until it crashed. Can you point me to where you are buying Joans DVDs?

@ZGAZBass28 You need to see the version with her in Standing in the Shadows of Motown. Its the best version of all time, and the very best thing she ever did. Its *better* than the original, and I don't say that lightliy. Just perfect chemistry on that single night.

Look this one up here on youtube. Joan Osborne - What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted - [ST It's a much better rendition with the funk bros. And if you like this you should watch for a film; Standing in the Shadows of Motown.....the story of the funk bros.

Joan is fantastic, as always, but the band doesn't "snap." I think the missing ingredient is the second drummer, who passed away just before the movie was released.

The Funk Brothers just don't sound right when they're not in the snake pit. This is too clean.. It almost sounds like a watered down Funk Brothers. They need that unique sound they're known for... You know, the gritty yet polished - distorted yet clean sound only The Snakepit was able to provide

Different, but perhaps not better. If you are referring to the version cut from the movie, yes, better polish and sound production. For me, though I like that version, it's canned, and Osborne is lip-syncing -- what you see is not what you get. Here, Osborne is real. I prefer real to canned if they're selling a "live" performance.

My beef isn't and never was with The Funk Brothers.. My beef is with their sound guy that dropped the ball. Yeah, you won't recreate the atmosphere of a Motown record in a live setting, but this is NOT the Motown sound.

sorry...the only way Joan "owns" this song is if she has the record...Her voice is breaking up, especially during the chorus where she has to belt it out...she has a decent voice for her own genre, but can't hold a candle to Jimmy Ruffin's original...JMO...
@solarmacharius

Sorry but absolutely disagree on this one - some songs are "colourblind" like this one and Osborne kills it.
