O&T Era is still pretty much present, just done way better. If you want 2 of the best examples, watch Creator and John Wick 4. Orange and Teal is very present but in a different way than it was before. Its not simply a colorgrade thing, its the costumes, back lights, sets etc etc. So yeah, that era is very present even today.

@@simplefilms4051 for sure and it definitely works well when done right but the egregiousness of it in those Michael Bay movies and others of the late 2000s is just a look I’ve always hated lol

A lot of Roger Deakins recent work has leaned heavily into orange and teal/blue. The Goldfinch, Blade Runner 2049, Sicario, Skyfall, Empire of Light, etc...

Would you be interested in having a technological and philosophical discussion about the adverse psychological effects of colour grading on hypersensitive individuals? I have been so distressed by teal-and-orange and desaturation that I have not been to the cinema or watched any new TV shows for 16 years.

Films like Oppenheimer, Beyond the Black Rainbow, Blade Runner 2049, The Lobster, There Will Be Blood, Killing of a Sacred Deer and Mandy feel like the future of cinema. Almost deconstructed post-modern films, where each individual shot tells a story and is a masterpiece in itself.

I think it would be interesting to see if there is is more experimentation with aspect ratios to play around more with verticality - such as levels in the frame, actor's body language, tall sets, and depth due to the next generation of cinematographers cutting their teeth by filming on cell phones, along with the popularity of IMAX. The vertical phone might lead to evolution away from Scope-style anamorphic aspect ratios and back to Academy ratio-styles, as suggested by @Moviewise's "The Future of Cinema is in the Past".

One fear of mine is that the actors in future cinematography will start speaking like so many of today's youtubers. Just an exhausting stream of fastly spoken sentences, cropped, trimmed and squeezed together, with no pauses for breathing and no time for reflection. I'm afraid a lot of great talent and interesting content will pass the audience by, if so should ever happen.

As far as technology, I think cameras are as good as they're gonna get right now, and the baseline mobile cameras are catching up fast. I think pretty soon people will be craving imperfection, film cameras, jitter, blemishes. It's already been happening with asthetic posts on instagram and stylized youtube vlogs.

I think Aftersun was a great example of this trend, the way it blended gorgeous cinematography with the old-fashioned Vlog that Sophie was filming gave the whole movie a greater sense of authenticity.

@@checkm8964 I totally agree! It seems to relate to how people like to have polaroids even today and use digital cameras to record important moments.

The classic film look is so much used, even though people by high-end digital cameras. Which is good because i love the feeling and look real film has, nothing will of course beat the real deal but it can come close. I'm just happy to see people crave the good old film look

Great video and I totally agree that experimenting with aspect ratio ratio mostly happens in indie films, usually with great results! "Dawn Breaks Behind the Eyes" is a recent one that played with format in an interesting way (gorgeous cinematography as well).

My guesses for future filmmaking (feel free to add points or to discuss with me) - For cameras: options for more compact bodies, even more dynamic range, noise performance, more sensor stabilization, low light capabilities and high resolution, global shutter Maybe more integration of lidar-technology? - More ways to integrate virtual production and probably also including ai to generate or expand worlds even quicker - More LED-lights on set, probably with even more output while having a smaller form factor while also having the option to be battery powered which will also make run-and-gun-productions and at remote locations easier. - maybe also Smartphones being used as crash-cams or extra camera, even in bigger productions? - ai assisting even more (pre-production: moodboards, generating call sheets, organizing the shoot days and so on)

I put something like this on another comment on this video, but I think it would be interesting that the future cinematographers who are watching films on IMAX and cutting their teeth filming on cell phones might embrace more verticality in framing & aspect ratios, moving away from Scope or anamorphic aspect ratios back towards Academy or Fullscreen ratios. EDIT: I forgot to mention - I greatly enjoy your remarks!

Great Video might I recommend something? Slow down, when speaking. Allow the video to be a minute or two longer. As a viewer I think we need some more time to breathe. Just a thought loved your insights one cinematography.

Netflix is also pushing the 2:1 aspect ratio. Which is resulting in shows and movies shot on anamorphic lenses which is then cropped. Which seems completely insane

I think as the the filmmaking needle moves toward the new tech, digital etc…there will be a value in the back to basic analog film route. There’s often a mix of the two in some quality films lately. For example, The Batman was shot digitally and using Volume-then was projected onto film and then scanned back into digital. Pearl and X did something similar (though that was only due to Covid, as the original plan was to shoot 16mm film). Zack Snyder had an old 90mm anamorphic lens rehoused to fit on the the RED Raptor camera for Rebel Moon. Will be interesting to see where it goes from here.

Please god don’t encourage more of the ridiculous aspect ratios we’re seeing these days. The lack of consideration shown for the mediums people view things on, is infuriating enough already. No one wants to see black bars all over their screens.
