In this episode of Learn Something New™ from NFPA Journal®, the future of crowd monitoring and safety is explored.
When people gather in large crowds to attend concerts and other events, they might be aware of certain risks like fire or even active shooter situations. However, crowds can become a very serious danger when crowd behavior is excited, panicked, or enraged. There are many incidents around the world where crowds have become stampedes, leaving thousands injured or dead.
New technology could allow crowd managers and other officials use data in real time to understand the dynamics of crowd behavior and control, so that tragedies can be avoided in the future.
NFPA® and the Fire Protection Research Foundation have been studying this matter. Learn more at nfpa.org.
