Hey, Jon. I found you in a KZitem search. Yours was a "you also may be interested in" offering. Truthfully, I don't remember the topic of that first video. What I do remember is subscribing inside the 2-minute mark (I've never done that, I'm a very judicious subscription guy). Then, after having watched another half-dozen or so videos on your channel, I compelled my wife to watch a couple with me. Afterwards I told her that I want to be you when I grow up. Now, to be clear, I'm well beyond any pretense of a mid-life crisis. Mine is a crisis of transitioning from a career into retirement. It's still a couple years out, but I've already begun to dust off long-dormant passions and I'm spending much more time with things I enjoy. Things that make me smile and feel that the world really is a safer, kinder place. Please keep doing what you do, just as you're doing it. Couldn't ask for more. Oh, except maybe another album available on Spotify. We listen to Paper Trail almost every night as part of our relaxing routine. Good stuff. Thank you for being there. And, thank you for being real.

Folks on KZitem doing what you “should do” to be successful on KZitem is what has led to 90% of KZitemrs looking/sounding the same and frankly annoying the crap out of me. I appreciate that you focus on quality and being Jon. Despite what the “experts” say, many of us (viewers) don’t enjoy being spoken down to by an “authority”, told to “smash the subscribe button” and getting hit with obnoxious jump cuts every .5 seconds of the video. Keep doing you! We appreciate it. P.S. I think this is the most times I’ve ever used “quotations” in a KZitem comment.

Firstly, Congratulations on 25k subscribers. I know it’s taken a lot of hard work to get here. To the next 25k 🍾 Personally, I have always been more interested in the person, what makes them tick. I am always more interested in my friends health and welfare than them as musicians. A genuine interest, not just a polite how are you. That said. I love the mixed bag I get from watching your channel. From making short films, using a drone, to compositions/scores. You are an extremely talented person and multi instrument, musician. I always feel inspired after watching your videos. Thank you and regards from distant South Africa.

I'm here for the music, you could easily get away with this format, showing you play some meditative americana stuff, and your reflections on top of it. I enjoy the styles you do. Try spend less time on the editing, image quality and stuff - that is not very important, so you can dial it back to the essentials, enabling you to create videos more spontaneous, imho. Congrats!

Jon, I probably found your channel scrolling through KZitem looking for music studio setups. And a lot of what you say in this video hits me pretty hard. I've been able to make a living from KZitem for the past 4 years, but I suffer in a similar way in that I have tons of interests and I get itchy to do something different. KZitem doesn't like that, so I've seen the growth of my channel slow to a crawl. I'm back to making regular videos but I still want to find a way to change the narrative. I think I'm a few year older than you, but it sounds like our backgrounds have a lot of similarities. In a lot of ways, what you're doing with music is the road not taken for me. I went from being in a band making records and trying to get over the hump to make a living at it, to grad school for creative writing, teaching creative writing, and somehow...KZitem. Didn't think KZitem would be the thing, but here I am. I realized once I went full time that I had to find some way to make what I was doing sustainable and that's been a challenge. I want to bring music into it more but that's hard, too. I don't know exactly how far to go and not lose everyone who signed up for simething different. What you're doing, sharing your experiences and thoughts on what you do and how you do it, is very attractive to me and I hope I can find a way toward doing something similar in the future. All this is to say, "Thanks for the video." A lot of the time watching your videos feels like I'm talking to someone I've know for a long time and that's a rare experience here. Congrats on the success of the channel!

Well done, Jon! It's important for everybody to ask yourself: How do I want to spent my lifetime? What does really matter for me? Most people don't think about the fact, that their lives are limited. Something bad can happen to you and suddenly your life is gone. Therefore, we should do all the things we really love, and making music, dealing with music production, sampling etc. makes so much fun! For you and me and thousands around the globe this is the way we go.

As a musician, I've felt that the requirement to spread too thin is a symptom of collaboration culture. Working in non-music on long-term projects with diversely talented teams showed me how powerful teams are...but I do not see this happening at the ground level of music. Established musicians may team up (or established KZitemrs do collab videos), recognizing a win-win trade is available. But for musicians getting started it's like herding cats to get collaborations going. So when you can't count on anyone else?...you spread yourself thin to cover all bases.

Hi Jon. I think you need to get out and be around people in the real world as a natural part of your work life. I am in a job alone most of the time and it is not healthy if you are a social person. I am currently planning to move office to be a part of an office collective somewhere. To me it sounds like loneliness in your job situation is causing burnout symptoms which can certainly feel like a crisis in one form or the other. It is dangerous though if not addressed. Love your honesty and your channel. Best wishes.

0:55 -- I'd really encourage you to keep making videos on topics as they appeal to you and not feel pressured to focus on one topic; the diversity of this channel is one of my favorite things about it. I know what you mean about the pressure, though. I teach at Georgia Tech, and wound up becoming an accidental KZitem as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Most of my classes are on analog electronics (like my Guitar Amplification and Effects class, and my Analog Circuits and Music Synthesis class), so KZitem has a model of my audience associated with that. This summer I'm teaching my GPU Programming for Video Games class (which I love teaching), and each time I post a lecture for that I lose subscribers. :(

Jon I find your channel to be entertaining and inspiring. I actually live not far from you. I’m one of those that want desperately to create a channel that connects with people. Unfortunately, I am also one of those that feels like my personality doesn’t match my skill levels. I’ve put off creating a channel for many of the normal reasons…mostly that music/tech is so saturated and that I am not the best presenter on camera. However, those reasons haven’t stopped my desire. Been in the tech business for 30yrs while in the music and photography side hustle for even longer. I have a mixing/mastering home studio space that I spend entirely too much time in and want to do more. To be honest, I’m just rambling here which is basically the story of my life at this point. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your channel and wish you well. Perhaps we’ll cross paths one day. Take care!

Congrats getting to 25k, I've been steadily growing my channel and with my bachelor's degree finishing. I've been wondering about the direction to take it into. The way you do videos and explain stuff has really helped, especially production music as that was what brought me to the channel. I use your video 'you don't know what you need to know' as part of my dissertation, because you were able to convey something that I was going through, and a lot of artists go through. You inspire me to get better at using my gear and get better at making videos. So, onto the next milestone!

He’s doing what I feel called to do, he beat me to it” if that makes sense. Not at all in a negative way, but a very inspiring way. Beato works hard..but he has a team behind him. :) I notice many of the older Nashville cats.. they play a singular ...but professional role. That's maybe something that's wrong with the scene today - to make you spread so thin. I did that many times - but you should lock into a groove that enables you to shake off some of the unnecessary weight.. we all know a challenge feels great.. but we do have to be logical about what challenges to take on. Good on you for expressing that - looking forward to more content.

Congrats to you on hitting 25K, that's no small feat! What I love about your channel is the strong sense of sincerity in everything you do and say. It's such a simple word, but the qualities that make up true sincerity (being authentic, transparent, generous, and staying true to who "you" are) are becoming more and more in short supply these days, it seems. The idea of being spread too thin is very close to my own mind these days, and it can often be a real struggle, but it's comforting to know I'm not the only one. So many other familiar faces in that montage, too - other folks that I also follow on KZitem - and lots of unfamiliar ones that I'm sure will cross my radar at some point in the future when the time is right. Anyway, thanks for all you do, keep up the great work, and above all have fun doing it. All the best to you from here in Memphis TN 🙂
