So, two years out of uni with a CS degree when those were rare as hens' teeth, first trip over from the UK to the US and doing a 6 month network security consultancy for an outfit in Washington with shady connections to a certain US government agency. My boss had set me up with a nice apartment and a convertible. I was driving to work early in the morning so I needed sun glasses to stop from being blinded by the low sun. Then this came on the radio. I thought, yup... not nuclear science, but pretty close otherwise. The song's stayed with me ever since.

Pat revealed on VH1's 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 80s that the meaning of the song was widely misinterpreted as a positive perspective in regard to the near future. Pat somewhat clarified the meaning by stating that it was, contrary to popular belief, a "grim" outlook. While not saying so directly, he hinted at the idea that the bright future was in fact due to impending nuclear holocaust. The "job waiting" after graduation signified the demand for nuclear scientists to facilitate such events. Pat drew upon the multitude of past predictions which transcend several cultures that foreshadow the world ending in the 1980s, along with the nuclear tension at the height of the Cold War to compile the song

The problem is, you can't write a song that is 100% sarcasm and expect everyone to understand that. Sarcasm only works if it is said in a sarcastic tone of voice or thrown in to an otherwise sincere statement to make it obvious. It's no wonder people misunderstand the meaning.
