The Gambia, a West African country of 2.7 million people, is facing a critical maternal health challenge. Inadequate surgical capacity and infrastructure have led to high rates of preventable pregnancy-related morbidity and mortality.
To address this crisis, Baylor College of Medicine, with support from the Trini and OC Mendenhall Foundation, helped develop Smart Pods that function as an operating room and a post-anesthesia care unit. These mobile facilities will significantly increase the number of safe Cesarean sections performed at Kanifing General Hospital. Deployment is scheduled for later this summer in 2024.
