I agree totally. It's also how amazing his appearance can fluctuate per however much he weighs at a certain time. He's been a big fat guy for most of his career but he can also pull off just being a tall chunky guy and look good in either incarnation. The fact that he loses his face and neck fat inspires me to take it easy and drop some pounds.

Its interesting to see and hear Goodman in this scene. He gives mark EVERY CHANCE to get out. He wants to understand and he wants to help him. But he also recognizes addiction and knows that he can't be gentle about it. Especially after hearing how deep he was in for. I think that's what makes his last scene in the movie so poignant. Offers free money, a free ride because he is a man of principle, and still gets turned down. He's like a proud parent that see's their child actually learn a life lesson.

It's only one side of the coin, my friend. Some people having nothing to lose. So you take risks cause in the end everything we know, have, ever will be is nothing. You just have time, and the free will use it how you want. You do the best with the cards your delt but just because you get up, you're never out. You just sit at a different table best thing you can hope is you're comfortable where you sit. Only way out is when your time is up and someone else will take your seat. No nuts, no glory. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. A tale as old as time itself. A life not lived is not worth living. However. what do I know? I'm just another player in this life gambling with time. Life is gamble just with different chips and different cards.

While I don't have a million dollars, I am getting fairly close to having fuck you money. Turns out, you can have that same level at a low cost city while making $40,000 a year and investing wisely.
Well this current financial system forces you to gamble. Due to inflation, you have to constantly chase interest and most interest rates are well below the inflation rate. Most you can find at any bank tends to be at maybe 4.5 to 5% if you're lucky. Holding dollars these days is like holding ice cubes. Now, if you go overseas with that amount, you can do this like a king.

How does he make his eyes go completely black at 3:56? He goes from a kind (if crude) person who is trying to understand, trying to help - to a cold blooded demon in a literal blink of an eye to make the point of how serious he (and the situation) is. GREAT ACTING, and great dialogue, delivery and presence. While I agree with the comments that this is a great dialogue for someone graduating from high school to hear, I must also say that as I am at the end of my working career, and have successfully saved, invested and planned for my retirement, I feel that I am now, at this point of my professional career, also in a position of F#@k You, and must say that it feels great!!!! So good advice for any stage of life...

John Goodman is just simply The Man for certain roles such as this and certainly the drug dealer to those with money in “Flight”. A lot like James Gandolfini was made for certain roles as well. The gay hitman on “The Mexican”, the stuntman single dad on “Get Shorty” and of course Tony Soprano. Roles that nobody else could have played with near the same perfection.
