Since the 2022 World Cup has come to an end, and it's been a month since Canada battled in their games at the world stage... here's a throwback to 9 months ago today when Canada qualified for the 2022 World Cup for the second time in our history, and first time in 36 years. The absolute scenes!!
Overview of Canada's 2022 World Cup Journey:
It began with the first round of qualifying where Canada was the only team to finish with a perfect record in their group (4-0-0) and had the largest goal difference of any team (26) having only conceded 1 goal in 4 games.
Canada moved on to the final round of qualifying where the top 3 teams qualify and 4th place would go to a inter-continental playoff. Canada held a record of 7-4-1, and having come off a 1-0 loss to Costa Rica, needed just 1 more win to qualify. This was that game, Canada beat Jamaica 4-0 to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Canada topped the table with a 8-4-2 record as well as the most goals for and least goals against. Their only two losses we're to Costa Rica (who also qualified for the WC through inter-contintental play-offs)
On April 1st, Canada gets drawn its World Cup group which consisted of Belgium, Croatia, and Morocco. Despite losing all 3 games, Canada put up a fight nearly beating Belgium and tying Morocco. Let's not forget that this was arguably the toughest group of the tournament considering Belgium's golden generation was ranked #2 before the tournament, and the other two teams went on to become semi-finalists. Not the outcome we would have hoped but Canada and Alphonso Davies scored our first ever goal at a WC.
Should we be sad because it's over? Noo, smile because we came so far... and be happy at where we are going. Canada's 2026 World Cup endeavours are brighter than ever before. A couple Canadian players have now signed contracts in top European leagues and we will be more experienced than ever. Let's Go Canada!
