Lukla Airport, also known as Tenzing-Hillary Airport, is a domestic airport and altiport located in the town of Lukla, in the Solukhumbu District of Nepal. It is the closest airstrip to Everest Base Camp and serves as the gateway to the Solukhumbu district and Sagarmatha National Park. The airport has a short and sloped runway, measuring only 527 meters in length with a gradient of 11.7%, making it one of the most dangerous airports in the world. Due to its challenging location, the airport regularly closes from mid to late morning due to strong winds and visibility issues, with cancellations being common, especially during the monsoon season. The airport is named after Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest. There is no air navigation or radar system at the airport, and pilots rely on radio communication for take-offs and landings. The airport is primarily served by special short-takeoff-and-landing aircraft, and only very experienced pilots are allowed to land there. Despite its challenges, Lukla Airport is a vital hub for the region, with as many as 50 flights taking off and landing during the peak trekking and climbing seasons. The airport's unique history and the involvement of the local Sherpa community make it a significant and iconic location for adventure travelers and mountaineers.
