"Has the age of these uniquely convergent adaptations, like Queenie, 'stood still'- or is it perhaps time to move on to the next party?" -Christopher Caggiano, 2015
As two musical versions of "The Great Gatsby" barrel towards parallel runs in New York and Boston, theatregoers would do well to remember the last time a Jazz Age literary classic received two musical adaptations at the same time. Because in some ways, it's the same story - and in important ways, it's decidedly not.
Music underscoring this video is a 1923 recording of King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band - the recording is in the public domain.
