Brilliant video Tracy ! I think your one of best explainers of getting out on the air, esp QRP setup. I use the two following solutions, but the IC705 is the integral component in both. Alexloop hampack bag - in the accessories bag, battery connector, mic, stand, various other connectors. Essential to this solution is an assortment of bungee cables i used to attach the magloop to tables/poles/anything i can hook it onto, but I did use a tripoid in one my activations which went well. . When I run the IC705 in the LC192 bacpack, I use a Toybox antenna, in the side of the backpack pouches I use a MAT ATU. In the backpack sections i put in a set of Diamond radials, which are always connected to the antenna pole, the zips go thru. I've used this setup several times this summer and it didnt disaapoint, the 705 did get a bit hot on one outing tho. Power comes from a Ultramax battery, a sugggestion from G5TM - this has never failed me and kept me on the air at 10W for hours. I've been out more this year than I have in the last two, and I've enjoyed every POTA activtion I've done, but my latest one i made QRP contacts with my magloop into Switzerland and Spain - on 10W of power !! Cant thank you enough for your videos Tracy and your continued service to the hobby, one of the best guys out there :) 73 2E0FWE.

Well thought out plan! This year I went to the 5.11 range bag that carries everything. I keep it all there when I get home and avoid “borrowing” from my field kit. 73 de K2CJB

Nice setup. I'm not sure if your Power Pole junction box has a fuse like mine, but I put a 25 amp automotive type in line fuse at the battery so as to prevent a disaster should something short out. It does make it so you have to remember to have extra fuses.

Hi Bruce, I pondered buying a junction box with fuses, but reasoned that each device I have has its own fuses so opted not too. You've got me rethinking though, in case of a short in the junction box or connecting cabling.

You are redefining the term Portable. We had a “Portable” event one time where you had to carry your entire station approx. 1/4 mile and make only one trip. No wheeled devices (wagon / hand truck / etc) used to get to the station set-up area. My portable HF station will fit on the floor under the seat in front of me if on a plane. KX2, trail friendly 40/20/10 end fed, some para cord, small Elecraft vertical, radial wire, 25’ coax, two internal batteries (6 to 7 hours heavy operating time, microphone, attached paddle key, and all in a approx 6”x6”x4” bag.

Thank you for your comment. My estimation is that 95+ percent of portable operators these days do so within an easy walking distance from their vehicle. That's certainly my most common scenario. Love your tiny go-kit. I've got a similar one for my FT-817.

I have been trying to find the 4 piece mast you have in the video. So far, no luck. Brian VE3GUE

These can usually be found on eBay. Although marketed as a mast, the ones made out of fiberglas are not actually used as a mast by the military in the US -- we use aluminum poles that are slightly smaller diameter, but weigh a bit more. The fiberglas ones are used in combination with fiberglas spreaders to push up camouflage netting. The reason we don't use them as a mast is because the fiberglas can fail at the joints between sections when the pole is under tension -- fiberglas is fairly brittle in this respect.

I get that, Philip! My concern is going out, and having something fail or forgetting something then having to go home with my tail between my legs. So I am an over-packer.

Nice setup and great cases. I find myself walking a fair distance to my site. Taking a wagon or dolly might be difficult. For instance, when at the beach I have reduced my kit to a small molle backpack and carry 2 lightweight chairs and a boogie board. Sit in one, radio & tuner on other, and pack goes on boogie board to keep it out of sand. This makes my footprint roughly 4 ft x 4 ft. Do you ever work away from your vehicle where it might be impractical to carry all the cases? Have you considered a smaller lighter battery? If so, what are it's advantages and disadvantages? I also have 30ah and am considering buying a 10ah? Any thoughts you might offer? Thanks.

Tracy, the silica packs are a great idea, how do you determine when they are saturated? Do you replace them or do you pop them in the XYL's oven to dry them out?
@carlsacherich3868
Күн бұрын
I buy the kind of silica packets that come in clear packages. They are blue at first and gradually turned pink as they absorb moisture. Then you can easily tell when to toss them in the microwave. I bought mine on Amazon.
@OutdoorsOnTheAir

I'm going to be honest, I never thought about them getting saturated. I don't live in a humid environment and they haven't started feeling that way yet. However, you can buy a big bag of them on Amazon for a reasonable price and cycle them out if necessary. Thanks for your comment!
