To Ian's last point about AI replacing human interaction....I feel like podcasts also replace friendships. Hanging out with a podcaster sort of feels like hanging out with a friend, I think a lot of people rather hang out with there favorite podcaster instead of actually getting together with the people they know in their lives.

@@jameswebber2943 I'm not sure what you mean but video game streamers, recreational sport casters, crypto hang out groups....these types of influencers and internet groups have played a role in replacing face to face friendships over the past couple decades.

I still remember vividly in 1990s almost all media was crying that computer will be job killer. Instead, it creates much more jobs.
Regimes like China and Russia will use it for all the reasons making them more powerful. Therefor its important to lead!

At least as far as LLMs are concerned, we've been in a world where this is accessible to many people. Open source models are basically right there with gpt3 in lots of use cases.

Many of the concerns that Ian described is already in progress, specially the "dehumanization" of younger people. It is already a reality that many teens don´t know how to interact personally (specially with strangers), because they are so immersed in their smartphones doing "doom scrolling", so that they do not develop a proper social interaction skills. AI is already controlling what they consume and hence, what they have in their minds. We still need to know what impact this will cause in longer term with this new generation. But, in one thing I agree: Generative AI will make a much more broader transformation, in fields that were out of reach before (like arts). I believe that the Pandora Box is open, since there are so many open source Generative AI models freely available for anyone. Regarding regulation, if you regulate AI in Western countries, will it have the same regulation on Eastern countries? Highly unlikely...

Social Media is harmful in many ways but at least it is (or was) humans behind an account communicating with another human behind an account. AI removes the human component nearly entirely and probably entirely very soon. That's huge.

I agreed with Ian on autocrat using AI to advance their interests. But could some freedom, passionate actors also use AI against autocrat? In an AI world, everyone could use it to do good or bad. I don't know if this is good or bad. I know this, I like using Bard and sometimes ChatGPT. They need to work on hallucinations part to give more accurate answers.

People often think that the European Union regulates AI because there are no AI companies in Europe. But if you look at the continent as a whole, the investment ecosystem is there as are the companies. You cannot regulate AI unless you actually understand it. Ethical AI is a good way to stand out. European hospitals use AI widely as a diagnostic tool. French APCs have networked AI that launches defensive systems when the vehicles are under fire. ChatGPT got a lot of press, but what was left out was the contribution made by several European companies into that product. Making AI regulation also gives a lot of political power. On a final note, it is no coincidence that Brussels is making AI regulation at the same time as we are talking about the corrosive force of populism and containing it.

You didn’t mention the worst case scenario that the leaders in the AI field worry most about - that the AI beings will be so much smarter than humans, without controls to keep them operating in mankind’s best interests, they could destroy all humans as being unnecessary. Not enough is being done right now & we are getting to the point that it soon will be too late. The competition of AI producing developing companies are in a race to make it better, faster, smarter without any real controls on safety for mankind. The Neanderthals’ extinction serves as a stark reminder of how it could happen to us too. The letter signed by over 100 top leaders in the field wanting to stop/delay the progress until the world can establish safeguards seems to be falling on all government’s deaf ears. Scary to think that ChatGPT is already almost as bright IQ -wise as Einstein. How many years does mankind have before the AI robots are so much smarter than us & who knows what they will do with us. Perhaps you don’t want to freak out your audience with fear but that issue should be pressed on all governments around the world, so politicians act now while they can. I think it’s a greater problem than climate change & pandemics. Don’t you?

I've been working in AI since the 80's, and I think the FUD has been way overplayed. I agree with Ian, the real danger is what people do with AI, not what AI "decides" to do on its own, as if it had a will of its own, which it doesn't.

Computing power is nowhere near enough to simulate the neurons we have. Maybe once quantum computing really takes off... Until then AI is basically a "finish this pattern" tool, to put it extremely crudely. It is still a powerful tool and we will see in the 2024 elections how it can do the evil things Ian warned us about, sadly.
