The Getting Ahead program at St. Vincent de Paul Fond du Lac County is a financial empowerment workshop that helps individuals break the cycle of poverty and achieve self-sufficiency. We teach participants about the theory of change, which focuses on moving beyond the tyranny of the moment-a place where individuals are forced to react to immediate crises-and toward long-term solutions.
Participants are encouraged to detach from their immediate problems and think of solutions in a supportive, team-oriented setting. We create an inclusive environment by arranging tables in a square to foster eye contact and a sense of community, allowing everyone to share and support each other.
One of the key resources we provide is social capital, the power of connections. By expanding their network, participants can find solutions through relationships, gaining valuable support from peers, facilitators, and volunteers.
Through personal growth workshops, participants build courage to share their experiences, realizing they are not alone in their challenges. They learn by listening to others and by investigating their own situations, thoughts, and behaviors, gaining insights on how they can get ahead and find solutions to their problems.
Additionally, the program offers budgeting and financial planning sessions and is part of our comprehensive poverty assistance programs, offering ongoing support to help participants achieve financial independence.
