Thanks for the stories Tony. Both the short story and a peek into your life. Yes sometimes it's quite a quandary what to do for people. You don't want to break up a family but you don't want to leave them helpless either. I'm only a little younger than you and over the last few years I've let myself become far to sedentary. You feel fine then suddenly realize you're getting winded too easily and can't open the pickle jar! I've started exercising to get back my strength because I don't want to be a frail old thing anytime soon. You don't realize how fast it happens past 55. You cannot be idle or your body thinks "oh you have no use for me , ready for the after life are you?" No no no I'm not done. I'll exercise right now 😂

It shocked me how long it took to completely recover from my first major surgery at 62. It was abdominal, and I was working out and really focusing on my abs beforehand. Then I got Covid four weeks before my surgery date. It took a solid year to really feel like I had muscle tone and energy again. Aging is a trip! I'm glad you're working to stay functional, too. Good luck!

It’s interesting you talking about getting a personal trainer to stave off frailty. I started going to physical therapy a couple months ago for my back problems. I’ve been very for most of my life but as 50 came and went I learned that I’ve had loss of muscle strength which led to some serious pain. Turns out that strength training has improved my back muscles and I’m in far less pain (though I still need other treatments). Never stop improving yourself and staving off frailty. 💪

Thanks, Tony. Btw…The Beast With Five Fingers is where I learned the bones of the hand. Peter Lorre is a favorite actor. That story is certainly more sinister. In this story, I think the air of mystery is really what makes this story shine. The hand presents no real malevolence, but how long could you endure knowing that you will never know what or why this is happening.

I have had similar experiences as a social worker. I remember being warned about a particular elderly woman who was schizophrenic and had a history of violence. I was lucky and every interaction I had with her was just fine. It's often such a difficult decision to intervene, because it is not clear what is worse: to allow the person to remain in their current situation or to rip them out of everything they know and are secure in to move them to a more conventionally stable housing situation.

Fantastic story and narration. I heard something that sounded like tapping a couple of times when you talked about the hand. Not surre it that was on purpose; it definitely set the mood. Kind of sad, the account of the family….the father with dementia dead within 3 months of being put into a care home. Who are we to say he wasn’t happier where he was? I have seen elderly people inexplicably die - people that were not expected to - when their family puts them into a nursing home. They give up, it’s like they just decide they are not going to live that way. Anyway, I enjoyed this one - it’s one of my favorite ghost stories.

I was listening to another audiobook channel and it really struck me how there’s so much more to being a talented narrator than just a nice voice. The tone and pacing is so important for enjoyment of listening. The other narrator has a nice voice (and accent similar to yours) but his tone and pacing is not as good and it makes it harder to get absorbed into the story.
