Here's a chance to hear the otherworldly tonalities of a relatively affordable Gretsch. This is not just a hollowbody guitar with painted f-holes. It's a flamed maple box of secrets and untold sonic discoveries.
I managed to buy this used in mint condition for $1,500 from Six String Brokerage in Nazareth, PA (the home of Martin). I was lucky!
I do indie originals, so you're obviously hearing a narrow range of possibilities. Gretsch's jazz and country tones can be heard elsewhere on KZitem.
These stunning made-in-Japan "Country Classics" (a funny name that Gretsch used for the Country Gentleman before it reacquired its Gent name from Gibson) appeared between 2003-2006. Mine reads "Nashville Classic" on the headstock plate. In 2007, the model became the current G6122T-59 Vintage Select Edition '59 Chet Atkins® Country Gentleman, which is virtually the same instrument* and retails for about $3,500 USD today. It was partly designed by Chet Atkins' longtime rhythm guitarist.
I can verify these made in Japan Gretsches are indeed several steps above Gretsch's excellent Electromatic line and worlds apart from Streamliners.
Absolutely not disrespecting those affordable instruments, but the Gretsches MIJs are incomparably crafted from obviously higher-quality materials. I suspect they are the best instruments sold by Gretsch, dollar for dollar.
I also directly compared this, in shop, to a stunning $10,000 USA-Masterbuilt Gretsch vintage replica, and I felt this MIJ instrument was easier to play and more resonant; but the MIJs have more modern, flatter neck profiles and construction, so it's not surprising. The Masterbuilt was incredible. And cost $10K.
The MIJ quality is something you notice as a difference the moment you pick one up and play it. That said, I love the lower-priced Gretsches, too. (Again, I was lucky to get an incredible deal on this one.)
* One difference: My 2005 Gretsch came with a dual-blade Supertron pickup in the "fingerboard" (neck) position versus a Filtertron; my tuning keys are Grover Imperials whereas a period-correct key would be the "butterbean" Grovers).
