I love how, while this is brutal, Cooper plays it fair. He waits for them to come back, doesn't hurt the little girl, asks relatively politely for the information he wants. The Dad is clearly on the same page, so he lets him convince his son. And then he lets Tommy reach for his gun. The kid didn't have to. Coop likely would have just walked out if he didn't. But they all knew Tommy was about to do something stupid.
@jackzen4547

This stuck out to me too. I don't think the The Ghoul even wanted to kill Tommy. Him saying "Maybe someday..." was him testing Tommy. To see if he'd back down. What people have to remember is that with Cooper, he has simply adopted a more ruthless approach to surviving in the wastelands. It feels like I have seen a scene like this in an old western movie. A stranger turns up announced at a family home to get information from the man of the house. Stranger gets information and I think the man of the house tries to draw and open fire on the stranger but is beaten to the draw and killed. Stranger departs leaving the man's (now widow) mourning over her dead husband. It feels like the Good, the Bad and the Ugly or one of the movies from that trilogy. I am thinking it was a Lee Van Cleef (Angel Eyes) scene. I do love Coop's cowboy themed character in the show. In his limelight he was the Clint Eastwood of his day in the movie theatres. Now in the nuclear wasteland he has to rely on those ancient days cowboy gunslinging/fighting techniques to survive in this dystopian future. It is like the Opposite of Dune where the advanced Holtzman shield forces combatants to go back to hand-to-hand, bladed combat.

I think he deep down didn't want to kill Tommy I think he knew Tommy was just a stupid kid who got involved in things he shouldn't have but at the same time he knew that Tommy wasn't going to let him leave alive after what he did to Rufus It was less of a "I'm going to kill you for fun" situation and more like a "Only one of us is leaving alive and unfortunately it ain't gonna be you" You can actually hear Cooper sigh after Tommy hits the floor One could say it's a sigh of "Stupid kid really thought he could out gun me" but I think it's a sigh of "I didn't want to do that I really really didn't want to do that"

Tommy: I didn't wanna spend my life digging through dirt. I wanna build something and we have the chance- Dad: tell him what he wants to know or else he's gonna kill us all I love this bit so much lol. Dad's like fuck your platitudes you naive little shit we are in very real danger and all your build a better world rhetoric won't do shit to keep our brains intact when a bullet passes through them. It's an interesting contrast between an idealistic teenage dumbass and a man who's survived many years and grasps the reality of the situation in a way his son doesn't

That was definitely not fair, first he wasn't politely asking, that was a threat, which he did after he snuck into the house with a little girl who was alone and then somehow convinced/forced her to cook for him, which is beyond creepy and weird. Then he baited the kid into trying that, while he knew the boy was at a huge disadvantage and couldn't win. He goaded him about killing his older brother while threatening the rest of his family, and the kid had to look away, reach grab then point the gun, all the ghoul had to do was pull the trigger. The fair thing would've been to just leave and let him try to get revenge if he wanted, like in kill bill when she tells that kid she'll be waiting for her. I think he said he was worried about him shooting him the back, but he could've just told the kid to return to fields or whatever while he makes his exit in the opposite direction. Just a weak move by a weak character in my eyes, and a poor farmer had to watch his last son die because of it.

Maldover's base is at the Observatory, so the raider base is up "in the hills". The Bullet Farmer is most likely ex-NCR, so he has very low opinion of other groups in how 'they will save the world', especially since Maldover is talking about "endless power".

The Ghoul needed information. He knew this guy had information. So he set it up so that he would walk in and see him eating meat. Making him think that he was eating his daughter. Then he threatened them and got the information

It is a citation from The Good,The Bad and The Ugly, there is a scene that is almost the same. On the "plot" point, this is to show how the ghouls tracks down the others and also how ruthless he is. In old Western movies this kind of scenes had the point to show us the precise morality of a major charachter. How do they pursue their goals against the weak alone colonists of the west? Do they show faith in the good of people or in the bad side of people? How good are they with their weapons? So when they face the other main charachters we know whats up and we know the stakes. Usually this scenes are done in saloon, during poker gambit, during a valuable exchange/standoff or, like in this one, during an interrogation.

Also there are cases of murder on the American frontier, where the man was found 'not guilty' because the man he killed "had killed someone in his family". This was back in the day where if you were wanted, you could just leave the province and the law wouldn't follow you. So the threat of Tommy seeking him out for a "justified killing" isn't farfetched.
