Today, May 17th, 2024, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Giant Dipper. Designed by Fred Church and built by Arthur Looff and opened on May 17th, 1924, the Giant Dipper was the fastest roller coaster in the world at the time with a top speed of 55mph. On February 27th, 1987, the Giant Dipper was designated a National Historic Landmark. On May 5th, 2007, the Giant Dipper was designated an ACE Coaster Landmark. The Giant Dipper is the 9th oldest roller coaster in the world, the oldest coaster in California, one of only 3 surviving Fred Church designs, and the last surviving coaster built by Arthur Looff. The Giant Dipper is still ranked one of the best wooden coasters in the world. Enjoy our musical tribute as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of this legendary classic.
