@@BitrateBilly You can't farm puffballs. They are really just like fruit to a whole system of mycelium under the ground. Important to know that some dangerous mushrooms have a bulb phase (kinda like an egg) where they look like small puffballs while young. The only way to tell is to open it up and make sure that the flesh is all white and there aren’t any structures inside. There are some VERY dangerous mushrooms that start off like this such as the destroying angel. You never have to worry for a giant puffball, but for the small ones you absolutely do.

Fun fact: Mushrooms “mate” after releasing spore. The spores make an infertile mycelium and “connect” with other genetically compatible mycelium in the wild, to make viable mycelium that can produce fruiting bodies. Once a connection has been made, the new “mated” DNA travels all throughout the once infertile mycelium, and makes it viable to produce fruiting bodies. Another fun fact: Genetically incompatible mycelium rejects each other, and creates an exclusion zone between the two, so they stop meeting. I breed mushrooms as a hobby. It’s really interesting seeing them interact in a Petri dish. 😊
@Lemonz1989
7 күн бұрын
@YuckFouTubeX Saying they aren’t fertile was maybe wrong, but what I meant is this a single spore can’t produce fertile “fruit” (mushrooms). Many people think that spores are like plant seeds, but you need at least two of them before they can reproduce. :)

Fun fact: They also glow in the dark! But they're notoriously hard to make grow (as far as I know). My grandpa swore by making "tea" from the spores in a rotten tree stump and then sprinkling the "tea" around as the best way to spread them. Also, to be on the safe side it's good to soak them in salt water for a while before cooking. Sometimes little worms or ants get into them, and salt water drives them out.

WARNING FOR THOSE IN TEXAS! Death caps look very similer to puff/poof balls when they are in there budding stage (when they start growing up from the ground to create the adult mushroom) so ALWAYS cut your mushrooms in half before eating. If they look like a marshmellow on the inside you are safe, but if it has the mushroom shaped lines on the inside it is not safe for consumption and it can potentially be fatal. Stay safe out there folks 🫡

@stewbeef7868 Poisonous look alikes include the death cap (Amanita phalloides) mushroom, which starts out as a round egg that looks like puffball. Earthballs (Scleroderma species) also look like puffballs from the outside but have a thicker peridium and the internal gleba soon turns purplish black. (Google search)

The Death Cap, *Amanita Phalloides* when it first emerges from the ground and is visible to the naked eye, is in a stage known as the “primordium” or egg stage. The fruiting body of the mushroom is not fully developed, and the young death cap looks like a small puffball sticking out of the ground. Cut it open, like OP said, make sure you don’t see the lines of an underdeveloped case of natural selection

It's important to note that a lot of poisonous mushrooms (the destroying angel for example) look like smaller versions of the puffball when they've just started growing. Check by cutting it open before cooking. If you can see evidence of a stem or any yellowing/bug damage, it may not be safe.

If they’ve gone bad, you can still have some fun with them! They’re a PUFF ball because, as shown, they puff out their spores everywhere when agitated! Once a puffball has begun to go brown and look deflated, you can help it out and spread its spores by kicking it around for a little bit like a soccer ball! It’s only of the only things that makes finding a puffball too late worth it.

I've had these before, they are such a delicacy. Make sure to peel the skin on the outside though when you're processing them, as you dont know if anything's made the outside inedible. My favorite way to fix these is like toasted raviolis, the way to do that is to do a light batter on them with a flacky outside and then fry them. The inside tastes like ricotta cheese and is best served with marinara sauce.
