In the second world war, many of the men working at the venerable Gibbard's Furniture Factory in Napanee, ON enlisted in the armed forces. This left an acute shortage of labour that was remedied by hiring a team of young local women -- many right out of high school. They were nicknamed the 'Gibbard Rockettes' and were soon making grenade boxes as well as the fine furniture Gibbard's was known for. I had the good fortune to be able to talk to some 'Rockettes' and Gibbard employees a number of years ago. This song is the result. I'm grateful for the generosity of the Gibbard organization.
