Of the 10 Lifesaving Service Houses of Refuge that were constructed on the Florida coast between 1876 and 1886, only ONE remains. The Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge on Hutchinson Island in Stuart, Florida stands alone to tell a fantastic story of courage and humanity on the dangerous shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The House of Refuge is without question, the number one, most iconic structure in Martin County. The bold and resourceful women of the Stuart Soroptomist Club formed the Historical Society of Martin County (HSMC) nearly 80 years ago for the expressed purpose of preserving this wonderous historical structure, and the HSMC is indebted to them for their vision and resolve.
