I was deeply saddened by the scene between Peggy abd Dorothy. Dorothy saying to Peggy that once she goes south she will no longer be seen as a human, it's something I simply can't understand, such hatred. Hours after watching this ep I am still thinking about that sentence and it's impact.

I heard that, and my mind went instantly to the story of Emmet Till's mother, who basically described telling her son near word for word what Dorothy told her Peggy while being down South.

Well it was reality of that time. Still exists to a degree today. There are some sundown communities that exist in the south.

I think Peggy will be in real danger, unfortunately. Will her married boss swoop in and save her? I fear that's what's coming...

Welcome to the club of not understanding "such hatred". Unfortunately, this kind of hatred is fairly widespread in America. Especially in the years just after slavery and the civil war. I like to think it's better now. However, some current events show that the hatred still exists.

As soon as they said they were going to Alabama, my heart sank. Having too much melanin anywhere but ESPECIALLY in the south could be an offense punishable by death. When Peggy asked her mom if she expected her to be subservient in the presence of whites only to have her say "No, I want you to live", that hit me like an anvil. Reminds me of the conversations we had with our teenagers on how to conduct themselves if they were ever pulled over by the police. Black parents have 2 talks with our kids. The talk and "THE OTHER TALK".

I love Bertha in The Gilded Age. She can be very stubborn, often insensitive to others' feelings, and blinded by her tunnel-vision toward her goals, but her vulnerable moments are so powerful and pull on my heart-strings. I dare say that she is my favorite character in the show, and I cannot wait to see her take Turner down.

I think that Oscar and Maude both are looking for beards, and will be a good match. As to Turner, I think she told that footman too much and he told the staff, including George's butler and valet. I predict this is going to come back and bite Turner and put her back in her cage.

I was so glad that George was completely honest with Bertha when he was finally confronted with what Turner had done. I think George and Bertha will have a difficult time for a little while, but ultimately they'll get through it.

HBO broadcasts the same Gilded Age episode back to back and I look forward to watching and enjoying both. The first broadcast is a sumptuous feast for the eyes, all the beautiful clothing and extravagant decor, and when the second broadcast airs, I concentrate on the plots. This podcast is a wonderful icing to a magnificent cake. Love it❤

I wouldn’t be soo eager to travel down south as a black person during that time. Peggy is very naive & doesn’t seem to grasp or understand the severity of racism & life in the south for blacks bless her heart ❤️ 😢 14:26

Peggy better be careful, curious to see how the show handles racism in the south, in new york its clear yet subtle except for Armstrong. I do get a vibe from Maud she and Oscar are perfect at least he won't be fooling an innocent young girl into love. Bertha and George better get back on track. They are not the Vanderbilts, NO DIVORCE I COULDN'T BARE IT. Sybil and Matthew dying and Cora losing her baby on Downton has weighed on my heart enough. I saw the promo for episode 4 and Turner is plotting, did she expose Larry and Mrs.Blane, she looked smug, hope Bertha and George rally and strike her down. Larry Larry Larry what are doing, it feels like he feels something for Marian but isn't sure yet and does what boys did and still do, pass the time. Agnes meddling in Marian's love life is going to be interesting to watch, and teribble for Marian but I'm glad she isn't just sitting around with no love interest while Larry is well....... Finally Ada get your reverend girl, it's never to late.

In reference to the “soup at luncheon” if you remember back in season one Church said soup was not served at luncheon on any english table unless it is chilled. And Agnes has an english butler and goes by english rules.

Nathan Lane seems to be having a blast playing Tennessee Williams as Ward McAllister. I don't think the real Ward would really have taken that much of a risk as he did in this episode.

Turner has become a mountaineer. As far as George and Bertha…that isn’t the reaction that I expected from her regarding the then Turner’s midnight visit to George. But he may have suspected it.

Mrs Caroline Astor was apparently always known as Lina to her family and friends. It only stands to reason she and Agnes would be on a first-name basis, probably having known each other all their lives.

Wilde seems to have been on loan from a dinner theater company of Caligula. The actor was very miscast. The actor was short; Wilde was 6'3 in an era when the average height for men was about 5'7. He would NEVER have made a comment that crass about Oscar and John Adams- his recklessness would not come for another decade, after he had the achievement to match his fame, and at this time he was mainly seeking an heiress and would not have risked outing himself. His outfits would have made Willie Wonka look conservative, but he was not effeminate as he was portrayed last night- this was noted with surprise by several people who met him. At this point he was famous for being famous- he had written a self published book of poetry and some editorials. He was mainly known for being a character and in London parodied by Gilbert & Sullivant. His American tour was his first really lucrative undertaking. I kept hoping they would have him on last year during his 1882 tour. He'd have been perfect since his lecture tour was dedicated to home decoration and art history. The robber baron mansions would likely have given him apoplexy but some of the characters would have delighted him. I wonder if Twain will ever be a character. I'm groaning as to the historical errors they'll make about Tuskegee because they've already gotten several things wrong. Due to the Broadway pedigree of so many of the actors, I'm expecting Brian Stokes Mitchell as Washington. (There is audio recording of Washington- he had the very formal elocution of public men of the time.) While Alabama was definitely segregated in 1883 and there was hate on the individual level, the landscape wasn't as terrible as it would become and in fact not much worse than in many non-southern state. There were still many black (male) voters, for example. The worst of Jim Crow and disenfranchisement began a few years later.

Could you please ask the costume designer why she uses zippers up the back of some of the dresses when the zipper wasn't invented until 1913?
@LunaShimmyDiva
10 ай бұрын
According to worker in costume dept, they didn’t use zippers. She mentioned the numbers of dressers required in comment in fb. They had to use button hooks to close garments. Apparently very time consuming, and made her wrists n hands very sore! Plackets running up back of dresses covered loop closures…like loops n small buttons fastening back of contemporary bridal gowns.

Looked like Mrs Fane n Mrs Beacon wore two-piece dresses without shirt or scarf underneath. Other characters had similar necklines during day, but they were filled in by lace, presumably some type of shirt…
