Once again a big thanks to The Majestic Nth Doctor for sharing this gem of a track. You can listen to it on its own here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/mqB516WMhIeioJw What do you guys think of the track? Was Murray Gold right to replace it? Or should it had been kept? I personally prefer what we got in the final episode, but I do really love the part that plays when the Doctor asks Reinette if she still wants to see the stars.

They don't make episodes like this anymore. The Doctor had a lot of lovers, I have not seen them all, but I think Madame the Pompadour was one of the wisest. Still, maybe its for the best. A Time Lord and a human cannot be together. Human withers and die, Time Lords just regenerates.

The part about the live of Madame de Pompadour was done and executed brilliantly in every way. One of the best examples for good TV broadcasting. What I don´t care for was this sickening and gruesome framestory about those robots out of control. The way this frame story was done let me run for the toilet to vomit! Fun Fact for fans of Sophia Miles: She already was the young star in a remake of THE PARENT TRAP and later on featured in the TV Fantasy series MOONLIGHT.

@@aoifem4296 i think thats why the doctor admires humans so much, unlike him they're gifted with peace after a long life whereas the doctor simply changes his face and grows bitter with each regeneration, like he said "i'm old enough to know that a longer life isn't always a better one"

This is one of my all-time favourite episodes of Dr Who. Not because of the writing or the storyline. Not because the robots were particularly memorable or the mostly unused setting of pre-revolutionary France. It's because of the sheer chemistry and bond between the Doctor and Renette. In this episode, she was his TRUE equal, knowing more about him than anyone has before or since. It's no surprise really that Sophia and David dated for a while after this. They make such a wonderful couple and that really leaps out at you...

It would have been interesting to have the Doctor stuck in mid 18th century France for another episode, without Rose or Mickey, and fast forward ~20 years. Madam de Pompadour dies at the age of 42, and she seems to have been 20 or 25 in this episode. It would have been an interesting and bitter sweet story if the Doctor stayed in the timeline and gotten distracted by another threat in the Madame's forties long enough for her to contract the tuberculosis that killed her. At the end, he has to say goodbye. Then, in a parallel timeline/B plot, Rose and Mickey have to figure out how to get the TARDIS back to the doctor, now that they're no longer part of the flow of time within the events of this episode (all the time portals having broke). (Alternatively, it's revealed the fireplace was there the entire time, but the Madame never told the Doctor of the time portal.) Just a little what if.
