I would argue that seeing your beloved daughter die in front of you and living on with the pain is worse than someone coming and killing you. If the assassin killed Michael that would be the end of Michael's pain. Now he had to live on with the thought that his decisions led to the path where his daughter was murdered in front of him.

yes I agree 100%. I believe that while this movie was perhaps not as good as the first 2, it's by no means as bad as people make it out to be. Being killed has temporary pain, while living with the guilt that Michael has is like being killed every day for the rest of your life.

I never thought Sofia Coppola was inadequate as an actress. I always thought it was the way Mary was written. She was not an especially interesting person. There is only so much an actor can do with a flat, somewhat dull character. Note that her two best scenes (where Vincent tells her he can't see her anymore, and where she defies her father's orders not to see him again as a romantic partner) involved her handling conflict and anguish, which allow for more vivid acting skills to be used.

You can hear it in some behind the scenes footage. I remember the sound designers comparing it to the first movie, in which Michael is waiting to kill Sollozzo and McCluskey. The Coda cut ends simply w/Michael on the portico. He doesn't drop dead. That fades to a card that says to the effect that there's a traditional greeting in Sicily that says "may you live a hundred years". And a Sicilian never forgets". The real quote is more effective in saying what it means, but basically Michael's penance for his many crimes is to live a long time w/the memories of what his actions cost him & everyone he ever loved. A tad more poignant than dropping dead at 100.

@@rxtsec1 True Vito shouldnt have had regrets he did what was necessary for that particular time he faced different circumstances than michael yet both died of old age. Make no mistake about it young vito and michael were killers. You can see certain qualities in michael and vito but they came up in different eras neither should have had regrets . . Vito didnt have a brother because he was killed by a local don. Michael put out a hit on his brother which was a tough decision but when you cross that line of betrayal there is no second chance in the mafia . Now when it comes to Kay she was not fit to be a mafia wife. Shes nothing like Vitos wife or appolonia , so there was always going to be conflict . Lastly, In that life you are going to have losses some greater than others . Ironically , Michael started to actually lose more because he kept trying to atone for what he did in the past which open him up for his enemies to attack . He really was saying no & I will continue to try and kill him. Same thing happens at the meeting of the 5 families where Vito realizes it's Barzini. In Godfather 2 Hyman Roth & Michael are talking in code but both know the other is trying to kill each other with the final conversation of Roth actually telling him why because of Moe Green. In part 3 Micheal sends Vincent to atalbato but Connie's scene is the biggest example. She's basically telling him I love & Forgive you for killing Fredo & I understand why you had to do it & it was the right thing. Powerful scene

@scotcarr3390
2 жыл бұрын
Let's be honest - Vito was an honorable man in an dishonorable world. He also was a man who loved, was loyal to, & protected his family. But he was NOT "good". Vito had people killed. Sometimes in very horrific ways (when Luca Brazzi did the killing) & ruled by fear, torture & murder. Vito was a complicated man. He lived a complicated life. He was a man who loved certain people & had that love returned by a few. But he was evil. He could rationalize everything he did & he was good at that, but even those he protected & nurtured knew they had to grant Vito " a service " on demand. These people knew what would happen to them if they refused Vito. Bonasera knew. He spent his life trying to not be a part of Vito's world & only yielded to his "friendship" when his daughter was denied "justice" in the "legitimate" world. And poor Bonasera lived in dread after his initial gratitude of the men who beat & almost raped his daughter got pummeled by Vito's men until the day Vito died.

The Godfather trilogy should be shown in schools. It has so many life lessons that I think would help a out of people especially in teenage years where society wants you to be a good consumer and just hang at the mall with your buddies and pretend the world is made of bubble gum and fairy dust. This story rips your heart outta your chest and makes you really look at the struggle of what happens when you go down a dangerous path like Michael did. Too many people see the glamour in a lifestyle like that. Similar to inner city gangs. They promote the fancy cars, loose women, and money but they dont talk about the shattered families that are left behind and life sentences without parole.

Your video is so good, I almost revised my opinion about Godfather III. Almost. It's certainly better than I remembered it, and I've seen it in its entirety twice, the first time in the movie theatre. But the among the things that bother me: 1) Michael's sudden, and I would add unconvincing need for forgiveness. Sure characters can suddenly develop new emotional arcs, but after two films featuring Michael's ruthlessness and probable psychopathy, Godfather III wants us to believe he is chucking all that for a whole new tree. Pacino is great at expressing this new need, but I still hae trouble fathoming where it comes from. 2) The absence of Robert Duvall's Tom Hagen character cannot be overstated. He is such a connecting force that helps make the Godfather films work. He is both an outsider by not being a Sicilian, and insider by working as the consigliere. One of the reasons Connie has to become so involved in Godfather III, is that Tom is not there. It's kind of jarring, and not as credible, as Michael's arc in the films. 3) The film's dialogue and tone is so much coarser than any of the other films. Sure, Coppola was trying to show how whatever glamour existed before was out now, but the constant cursing and clumsy dialogue is a far cry from the astonishing eloquence of the first two. And sure, it required a massive suspension of disbelief to just listen to the dialogue (as if gangsters really spoke in such exalted tones), but how it sparkled! Aside from a few possible exceptions, there are no immortal passages in Godfather III's screenplay. Check my own video on my page for more on this: LyVerge.

I feel like the end of Part 3 was rushed, while we can piece together that he died alone, having lost or driven everyone away, but given his state of being when his daughter dies, having been close to finding peace prior and no doubt broken afterwards, I feel like the tragedy should have done more to unite his family rather than divide it. He was seeking redemption, to leave his past sins behind him, and realize what mattered more, so did his daughter's death undo that? Did he throw himself in to seeking revenge? Did his relentless pursuit of it drive everyone away? We don't know, because we didn't get to see it happen. If Michael lost everything that would have kept him on the path to peace then it would make sense that he'd lose himself to his ambition, but we don't see that either.

Michael’s son was performing in Sicily. That’s why Michael and the whole family travelled there. That is obvious in the movie. Completely absurd to say he went there because he was missing his first wife. Michael actually went there with the hopes of reconnecting with Kay. In fact we see Michael seeking her out from the beginning of the movie with him offering her cake, surprising her as her driver, lunch date etc. That’s why Coppola wanted Kay’s current husband to stay back at home. He only briefly remembered her when a Sicilian song was played.

because Coppola did not want to pay decent money to Robert Duvall (Tom) for Part 3, and Al Pacino refused to take any pay cut, that is why "Michael has a smaller inner circle". @@theALMIGHTY987 With all respect to Andy Garcia, he's a good actor but not on the level of Pacino, Deniro, Brando, Duvall, Lee Strassberg, Sterling Hayden, James Caan -- these are the greatest actors of all time! Some of Garcia's scenes were gratuitous and not worthy of a Godfather film - the Brigette Fonda nonsense, and the hit on the irrelevant Joey Zasa. All the violence in the first two films was core-justified, not 'let's just throw in some violence to keep the audience from falling asleep'. All the Vatican scenes and the final Opera were worthy of The Godfather. So I focus on those and mentally edit out the 'Vincent' stuff.

Imagine how powerful the Godfather Part IV could have been, as Coppola and Puzo conceived it - as a split timeline showing Sonny's rise to power during the Olive Oil wars in the past; and in the present, Vincenzo striking out in vengeance against everyone responsible for Mary's death, while watching the whole world of organised crime start to implode due to drug wars, enhanced interdiction, and competing factions. The plan was to show the family in its glory days on the one hand, and then its very last days on the other. But then Puzo died and Coppola didn't want to continue without him. The more I've heard Coppola talk about it, the better of a film it sounds. But now Garcia is too old for that role, and Coppola has given up the idea.

I just finished watching the CODA version of Part III and honestly, I really really liked it. It truly was tragic to see Michael's end, even though he doesn't fall over and die, like he did in the original cut.

Two evil men's prolonged screams of horror bracket the Godfather trilogy. First, after the beginning of part 1, where film producer Jack Woltz awakens to find his favorite thoroughbred's head in his bed. Second, at the end of part 3, Michael's reaction on the concert hall steps when his daughter Mary is gunned down. These are echoed by the dying whispers of Kurtz (Brando) in Apocalypse Now: "The horror, the horror...."

So...we just gonna ignore how Vincent, the Illegitimate Son of Sonny was having a Relationship with Mary, the Daughter of Michael? That's his First Cousin. And they had a relationship. Why does nobody ever notice this? It's pretty disturbing.

No not really, the truth is, these things are decided by culture, your culture may not align with others, and it’s not about morals cause morality is subjective, and what u find immoral is moral by others

@@Croco_GMorality is not absolutely subjective. Hitler believed his actions were moral. There are a lot of convicted offenders who personally believe they didn’t do anything immoral. It just comes down to cultural differences.

I will watch it now, GF#3 thanks to your fantastic video and the intelligent discussion here. I truly misunderstood it earlier. Death by a thousand cuts. Only Francis Coppola would create this depth. And only Al Pacino pulls it off.

Wow bro, I’ve seen the first movie and thought it was great, I never saw pt2 just never had time, (didn’t want to see it since Sonny died in first movie) and all my life I heard part 3 was trash, now you have given reason to view and finish the saga, thank you.

It's worth it. The only suggestion I'd make is to watch Coppola's recut titled "The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone". There are only a few differences between it & G3, but Coda overall seems better paced & more poignant because of said changes.

That’s really more of an American taboo than a European one - and the Corleone’s kept a lot of Italian culture. The cousin thing may not have mattered much to him.
