Although I like the somber opening showing the abandoned and broken down Lake Tahoe estate over Michael's voiceover- which is a good metaphor for the ruination of Michael's family, this alternate is a better choice. We don't need to see the Tahoe estate to understand the lines drawn between Kay and her children regarding Michael. The alternate shows where Michael's ambitions truly lie. It isn't until the end that he realizes what was really important.

My father once told me that when he lost his first son he lost his life, more than all the money and power on Earth. They should’ve kept that line. It really stuck with me because although Vito died playing with his grandson losing Sonny was a huge blow that probably contributed to his demise as he must’ve blamed himself for Sonny’s death as his role as Don led Sonny into the mafia, resulting in his death. It also foreshadows the effect Mary’s death will have on Michael.

This is in the film, but later. I suppose it was a choice for the opening scene because it hearkens back to how the Godfather Part I began; with Don Corleone being asked to do a favor. With a simple funeral parlor director asking then, now the Corleones are more legitimate and extrememly powerful, so this time it is a bishop of the Catholic Church who is asking.

Personally, I think "The Godfather, Part III" was a somewhat good film. But it is hardly as much of a classic as the two previous "Godfather" films. I sometimes often wished that there would have been better writers to help with this third and final chapter of the saga. As for the casting, I understood the pressures that were placed on filmmaker, Francis Ford Coppola, for having put his daughter, Sofia, as "Mary Corleone," in the movie as well. Furthermore, this third "Godfather" movie will probably remain as divisive to movie fans everywhere.

*"Don Corlieone ... I need to get hit by a ton of money, and pronto!" ... LOL.* *i have the feeling that David Chase paid homage to this scene when he had the local parish priest try to shakedown Paulie Walnuts for as much money as The Good Father could get.* kzitem.info/news/bejne/tXhtnoCucKeBnG0 It might be noted -- no, actually, it SHOULD be noted -- that the Catholic Church has ownership of properties and financial assets worth billions of dollars. For example ... The City of New York is the largest slum landlord in New York City -- and guess who's #2 -- why, none other than the good ole Catholic Church. If the Catholic Church were to liquidate all its financial assets -- its stocks, its bonds, its properties, its art collection -- if the Catholic Church were to liquidate all its financial assets and hold their services in local parks, they would be able to, as the Bible puts it, "feed the hungry and clothe the naked" the world over. And if the other organized religions were to follow suit -- especially the televangelists -- I imagine their directing money to the poor and needy would be most pleasing in the eyes of the Lord. NOTE: The only time Jesus got pissed and lost his temper was when he went ape-shit and kicked the moneychangers out of the temple. God only knows what he would do with the thieves who run organized religion nowadays. Now, here's the thing ... Since those who are in charge of the various organized religions DON'T do that, don't divest themselves of their financial assets and use that money to help the poor -- one can only assume that they're not theists at all. They must be ATHEISTS. I mean, how can they say they believe in God when such a display of greed and oligarchic elitism marks them as nothing more than corporate hustlers. There's no other logical conclusion.
@UltimateBargains

Religion is all about social engineering and social control. The Catholic Church can give their wealth by building institutions of learning and medical care. Then they can educate and train people to the best of their abilities, and provide aid to those who are unable to help themselves. But they don't, so the conclusion stands.

I don't hate the third movie as much as most people (including Pacino and Coppola). It followed a true story line with the Vatican/Pope angle, and it was right that Michael suffer in this way. The story is about family and betrayal. Vito died in the backyard with a child (family) by his side because he never did wrong by his family. Michael died alone. Vito once said, "Santino was a bad Don" because he let his temper get in the way of business. Ultimately, Michael was good Don, but a bad father and head of house. He let his temper get in the way of family. I liked the movie.
