I agree we could be on the precipice of a new golden age, but really what set the 2000's apart was being able to develop for the wii and for the gamecube, as well as all of the third party developers arguably being at their peak. Firstly, the wii and gamecube were competent 3D consoles, but critically they weren't HD. HD game development is orders of magnitude more expensive and time consuming than developing for standard definition systems. If you wanted to make a AA game for the gamecube or Wii, you could finish it much faster, for much less money, and have more leftover development resources to add extras, fix bugs, and flesh out postgame content. Despite not selling well, the Gamecube library has such a cult following because many games are stuffed to the brim with excellent content. As for that time, let's think about who the major Mario third party devs were. Firstly, we had HudsonSoft making Mario Party. Hudson made a great formula for these games on the N64, and they perfected it on Gamecube. The low cost and low time requirement of development on GC, as well as their established development process on past titles increasing efficiency on current titles, meant they could consistently pump out high quality mario party games every year. Another big one is Intelligent Systems. They were undoubtedly at their peak during this timeframe, dropping some of the most beloved Fire Emblem games of all time (Blazing Blade, Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn), and after establishing Paper Mario on the N64, they made the incredible Thousand Year Door, a fan favorite JRPG that many cite as one of the best games of all time. It's even getting a remake this month. Then we had Next Level Games. While they would go on to later create the excellent Punch Out for Wii, in terms of mario games, they made Mario Strikers, a game with an iconic artstyle and tons of 2000's attitude. It was so iconic there was a new entry on switch, though it was much less impressive since Next Level Games fell off after the wii... There are more games and more devs to talk about, a few of which the video mentions, but overall this was an excellent time period for third party devs to create excellent games, and they definitely did. Right now could definitely signal a new mario Golden Age, with Odyssey, Wonder, Mario RPG Remake, and TTYD Remake, but it remains to be seen how long they can keep it up. Bowser's Fury wasn't very good, and the 3D team was heavily involved with the development for Wonder, meaning that a new 3D mario isn't gonna be any time soon, and if it is, and it's anything like Bowser's Fury, it will probably be a lot worse than Odyssey was. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had it's average course quality tank from an influx of shitty mobile game tracks. Mario Strikers Battle League is anemic with how little content it has to offer. Mario Party Superstars was good but desperately needed more boards and more characters to stand out, but it received no post-launch support. Mario Tennis Aces and Mario Golf Super Rush are utterly middling entries. Mario and Sonic hasn't been good for well over a decade. At the very least, Mario x Rabbids is pretty cool. I definitely wouldn't say right now can hold a candle to the 2000's, though.
