Shih Tzus - We love ‘em but… nobody's perfect. So here's the good, the bad, and the ugly of the Shih Tzu.
Let’s start with the (sound of gong) good (sound of a monk/yoga ommmm). Since first appearing in Tibet over 1,000 years ago as monks’ guard dogs, Shih Tzus have been bred for one purpose only: to help their owners achieve inner peace…i.e. being good companions. Even today, they don’t require too much physical activity, making them ideal for older owners or people who live in apartments with no yard. Do you suffer from allergies? Well, the Shih Tzu may be the breed for you, because they shed so little they’re considered hypoallergenic.
The bad? Shih Tzus tend to get a bit, well, thick. We love pups of all sizes - we Shih Tzu not - but excess weight is a life-threatening issue, which can lead to other problems like herniated discs. And the bad doesn’t stop there, Shih Tzus suffer from a number of eye and skin problems, such as allergies and corneal ulcers. So keep an eye on their, well, eyes (add blinking sound).
Ready for the ugly? Let's just say that there aren't many dog breeds that you can play fetch with using THEIR EYE THAT JUST POPPED OUT... EYE yi EYE, am I right? (add the text “e ye yi eye” on the screen - a play on the phrase “aye yai yai”)
While every breed comes with its good, bad, and ugly, at Animalia, we make sure there's always more good than ugly, even when something bad happens.
