I should stress that this is only MY opinion. So what did YOU think of the DLC? (Spoiler thread)

Shadow of the Erdtree feels like a lot of the highs and lows of Elden Ring condensed into an area roughly a bit bigger than Limgrave. On the one hand, these bosses are some of the most fun I've had with this game, exploration can be greatly rewarded, and the level design (both visually and gameplay-wise) outshines even the best of the base game in certain areas. Rellana was a blast, she felt like Malenia but actually fun to fight. On the other hand, I see a lot of the bosses still suffer from pitfalls that Elden Ring's design philosophy has created (overemphasis on AOE, movesets that not only require extremely tight timing, but also make a number of bosses feel same-y), while the level design of other places feels puzzling and just kind of bad. I think the key example is the Abyssal Woods. Once the novelty of the creepiness and uncanny atmosphere wears off, you end up realizing that it's just a huge, empty area with very little worth exploring for. Further compounded by not being able to summon Torrent for whatever reason... Seriously, they could have cut the Abyssal Woods in half and nothing would be missed. Fortunately it's redeemed by Midra's Manse and the titular lord being some of the best-designed stuff Fromsoft has made in a while. Seriously, the Manse consistently looping back into itself felt extremely cool, reminding me of the old closed-loop design philosophy of Demon's Souls and the first half of DS1.

the entire idea behind the convoluted quests in souls games is to make people talk about it online its not supposed to be obvious

@@skimrizzle9598 Problem is when you have quests that have points of no return , that is when it becomes a problem because it will ruin your experience to a degree , also no shot 99% + of people are going to be able to figure it all out their own so they will have to look for guides and at that point if I have to look for a guide for most of the quests , it becomes frustrating and just a massive time waster , its not fun , not for me it least . I love FS games but have always hated the questing system despite liking the quest chains , looking at a guide is not fun nor immersive for me . The difficulty is fine , the bosses are fine , I am always for making the gameplay more challenging but the questing is pure frustration , I am not saying they should put 10 quest markers on the map like AC but they need to make it more obvious where to go or what to do . Missing content is never fun .

In regards to quests I think when people hear complaints they envision Fromsoftware taking the Ubisoft approach and just plastering the map in icons. As if there's not a happy medium somewhere. Hell, half the quests could be saved by them just mentioning "oh by the way im going to the Haligtree". Its not jarring or immersion breaking. Alexander the Jar keeps talking about the Rhadan festival. AND you can miss him in that one dungeon without ruining his questline. Or how a lot of NPCs are found at chokepoints in the worlds geography so you cant miss them. I also think a quest journal would help. Because if you talked to an NPC 12 hours ago you'd be forgiven for forgetting their dialogue. Like open your journal and it says "Alexander is making a pilgrimage to the Rhadan Festival. Maybe I should meet him there". I would also like to see them more integrated into the world and gameplay. Like during Ranni's questline we go to Siofra River with Blaidd. Why not let his physical character fight along side us for a portion and then we have to "split up" or something. Summons effectively do this anyway. Let Blaidd come with me and he can even have a few lines of ambient dialogue. Allude to world and lore stuff. Aknowledge something in the world like "some enemies up ahead" or a statue of Marika and he growls or soemthing idk. I feel like there's a lot here

Yeah true. There are so many obvious solutions that could please everybody, but their busted quest system got grandfathered in after Dark Souls 1 and they never bothered to take a good look at it. Seems like a pretty big oversight when you consider that Elden Ring is a completely open world game and yet the quests are designed as if it was a straight and narrow line.

One of my main complaints is that some of the open areas just feel like they have nothing in them. I'll go to this big wide open area and maybe see one item to grab and maybe one elite enemy to fight, combing every inch of every area doesn't feel as worth it in this DLC.

I feel like part of the issue is that they had a pre-determined size for the dlc based on the regular map (the dlc fits into the missing middle chunk in the middle of the main map)

I love this game, and the DLC, but what holds this game from being a transcending experience are the things Fromsoft refuses to update such as the camera, questlines, and multiplayer fluidity. I indulge in the PvP as I love the back and forth interactions between players in conflict. I believe another thing they could have improved on with this update was the possibility of adding covenants (factions) with proper player rewards for engaging with the system. This along with maybe some balance changes to give the Invader a little more juice to fight against the overwhelming odds would be a welcome treat that would solidify my experience of the game close to perfect.

I 100% agree. Missed the entire Thiollier questline my first playthrough. I feel the boss fights and combat in general has gotten to the point of 'hard for the sake of being hard'. Bosses punish you for taking advantage of openings by adding conditional moves to their combos as long as you're close to them/healing; boss fights have become a game of waiting your turn to tickle them, otherwise roll, roll, heal, roll, run away; the AOE movesets, speed and aggression at which fights occur is just silly, and forces you to exploit i-frames, which was never something that I thought FromSoft would encourage, i-frames were never the meta as far as I know. This was a problem with the late bosses of the base game, but it's exaggerated in the DLC, all culminated in the final boss of the DLC. Long time FromSoft fan, just my thoughts.

Wow, its exactly what I would say about it! Questing is so frustrating I have to take 1 point away. Even tho the world and bosses are that good. Also 1 point goes for the old feeling combatsystem. Id give it a very good 8/10. Its a fantastic game, with a few flaws. But MANY aspects of the game are so good. Its easily one of the best games ever made. Edit: Oh man your so right about the camera ^^

I cannot agree more with the quests part , I missed so much on my first playthrough because I was exploring naturally and of course many quest givers have points of no return . The souls community goes on and on how great this system is and how rewarding it is , but most of them look guides on how to deal with this as well despite lying about it , so what is the point then ? I am not saying there should necessarily be generic quest markers but they have to give us more info and details especially when the game is open world , it should be more like solving a puzzle rather than looking for a needle in a haystack . On my second playthrough I will follow an in depth guide step by step so I don't get screwed over by the game again .

I've heard complaints about the Scadutree fragment system, mostly that once you have them all it makes non-boss encounters too easy. Is there merit to this? I haven't found all of mine yet but curious on your thoughts.

@notadoctor3324 "too easy" is a bit of a stretch. Easier for sure, but that's what they're for. They're meant to reward your exploration by letting you dish out more pain and take more too. I don't think anything in the entire DLC is "too easy."

This is my favourite fromsoft expansion. And I think most of the complaints regarding the difficulty came from the players, not journalists. At least from what I read. Also, i need help defeating the last boss. Any tips?

@kerzeen it's just a long haul to learn all of their moves. Took me a number of hours. Stacking holy defense helps a ton, too. I also made ample use of bloodhounds step just to add to my i-frames time.
