I'll NEVER not cry at the ending of this movie! Love it! Definately in my top 20! No one but Richard Dreyfus & Marsha Mason could have played these characters. I had to get the DVD, no station ever shows this wonderful movie! I actually rewind back so I can continue my cry, I have to get it out. I have been known to watch the ending 3 or 4 times.

Basically every year from 1970 to around 1986, it was a stunning roster of releases. Those two decades were a golden era. Before CGI and the corporate machine of movie-making ruined everything. We had great, mid-budget, human stories and even the "blockbusters" had a soul. It's very hard to find a movie made these days that we can see the human condition in, in all its messiness and glory.

In this scene, everything that's great about this movie comes together concisely, superb acting, the brilliance of Simon's writing, and Ross's directing. I love the way Simon knew how to make things real in a script, and that's what so beautiful and funny to me about this scene. The practicality of Elliott going to Seattle to pursue his dream job, and her realization that there is true love between them. Still, Elliott, holding true to form, not responding to Paula telling him for the first time that she loves him, and instead worrying about her soaking (rusting) his guitar before riding off in a cab. Just brilliant, and that was the genius of Neil Simon.

I mean.... Wow! The Goodbye Girl was just one of those heartwarming feel good movies of that time period. It also helps that I was alive back then so I can really relate to the time period. 1977, I would have been 8 years old. You know a movie is fantastic when you never seen it until well into your 40's and it was powerful. A movie in so many ways represents a time period and as time goes on people change and tastes change but that movie remains that time, that era, that innocents, that cinematography. It's 2015 now but 1977 reached through time and space to touched my heart...... I'm a black man blubbering at the end of this movie! LOL! I had to do some research on it and I watched the clip here on KZitem of Dryfuss accepting his Academy Award for best actor and I was left feeling kinda bad. If one thing would have been moved differently, if one person would have been changed it would have been a completely different movie! It was the perfect cast and the perfect acting on everyone's part that made that movie what it is. There should be awards given for entire casts when a movie is this great. What a great movie. I'll always love these kinds of movies. God Bless....

I've always loved this movie -- I was 17 when it came out. I met Richard Dreyfuss once -- he was doing a performance of "The Devil's Disciple" for radio in Washington, DC, and a friend of mine who was an arts critic in DC took me to the broadcast. It was amazing. I got to talk to Dreyfuss beforehand -- we had a wonderful conversation. I asked if he would consider doing Cyrano de Bergerac, which is my favorite play, and he thought it was a great idea -- even walked back over a second time to discuss it with me! I am an actress (not an international star, but an actress) and I've always wanted to play Roxanne. I'm too old now, but I would have loved to have played opposite Dreyfuss as Cyrano -- he would have rocked that role!

Little Lucy was so wise cracking during the whole movie, but that last shot of her with the bike in the hall you realize that she's still so vulnerable. I guess she felt a little like "the goodbye girl" too . . . another man walking out of her life. I don't think she was that connected to her mother's previous boyfriend, Tony, but she had a real connection with Elliot. She let her walls down and she got hurt. (well at least the movie did have a happy ending because Elliot proved at the end that he was in it for the long haul).
