The author of the national anthem Vincas Kudirka arrived in Šakiai just after receiving a doctor's diploma and editing the first issue of Ūkininkas. After graduating from the University of Warsaw, his first workplace was located here. Upon his arrival, he was housed in the rectory by the pastor of the town church, Kazimieras Kalenda. Kudirka tended the patients right in the pastor's granary or attended them at their home. Rumor has it that he did not charge the poor and after issuing a prescription he would even leave some money for them to buy medicine. Later he managed to find a more spacious apartment in the city. Kudirka read, wrote a lot and kept in close contact with book smugglers, interacted a lot with local youth, played the violin, admired works by Verdi, Mozart, Chopin, Beethoven, and Lithuanian folk songs. While working in Šakiai, Kudirka devoted most of his time and his inner strength to creation, national movement and cultural activities For these reasons, Kudirka's apartment naturally became a meeting place for press distributors. A place for hiding prohibited books was installed in his garden, which was constantly replenished by book smugglers.
In 1998, to commemorate Vincas Kudirka's 140th birthday, Šakiai was decorated with a bust of Vincas Kudirka created by Stasys Žirgulis, a sculptor from Kaunas. It was placed in the very city center, exactly in the place where Kudirka himself tended the patients in a poorly heated barn.
