When railway lines were established in the mid-1800s, it was soon realized that ferries capable of sailing trains would be appropriate. However, for many it has been a dream to establish a bridge connection over the Great Belt, but it was only in 1998 and after 10 years of construction work that the bridge system was completed.
The ferry connection between Eastern and Western Denmark has for many years been part of the everyday life of the Danes - and both loved and hated. The ferries on the Great Belt sailed right up to the day the bridge opened and have now completely disappeared from the Danish waters. Only a few of these ships sail elsewhere in the world. The most famous is probably the ferry MF Queen Ingrid, which today serves as a hospital ship along the coast of Africa and is now called MS Africa Mercy. Before the bridge officially opened, there was an opening event where it was possible to cross to the island in the middle of the Great Belt: Sprogø.
The bridge system between East and West Denmark is 18 km long and consists of a combined bridge for cars and trains, a suspension bridge exclusively for cars and a tunnel exclusively for trains. The motorway across the Great Belt was opened on June 14, 1998, while the railway opened the year before, June 1, 1997. The total construction costs for the entire Great Belt project amounted to about 2.9 bill euros (in 1988 prices).
The old video part is recorded with a Fisher camera in Video8 format. The later is recorded with a Mobius action camera.
